  • In this series we're going to share how we harvest and preserve homegrown and wild food to feed ourselves mostly from our gardens and the woods - what we lovingly call "dealing with the abundance". This week we're foraging wild apples and pears and canning them for Winter!

    Vanilla is actually fairly easy to grow. Im not sure where youre at, but if youre not in a tropical locale, you just move it inside when the temps are too cold. I have a huge vanilla orchid vine on one of my oaks, and another tahitian vanilla orchid growing in a pot.

    • @rhianabrooke
      @rhianabrooke Год назад +3

      @@jaynedoe5830 definitely! They do need indirect sun. I've seen some grow them in bathrooms with south windows.

      @jaynedoe5830 mine is in a pot, and if you live in a zone that is not sub-tropical or tropical, you'll want to stick to a pot. You have to be able to move it inside during the winter. Orchids thrive in tropical locations.

    My town has a tool library, which is such an amazing resource. In addition to gardening tools (electric mowers!) and power tools (so many!), there are kitchen gadgets--stock pot and accessories for canning, dehydrator, etc. There's a sliding scale membership fee. I've saved so much money renting tools and kitchen gadgets instead of buying. Every town needs a tool library!

      We actually have one in Pittsburgh as well. We we're just saying yesterday how they need to get a cider press :)

      That sounds amazing! A school I worked at in our small town had a pretty substantial agricultural course and had a large canning facility that they would open up to townsfolk during the summers. You had to bring your own ingredients, cans, glass jars, and lids, but the equipment/machinery and cookers were free to use.

      @@dostagirl9551 I would love that! I've yet to pressure can anything. I want someone to hold my hand through the process. 😂

      I've been trying to get my local library to consider a tool library. They do have a library of things, but for some reason they've limited it to recreational stuff like fishing poles and board games.

    • @aldralee
      @aldralee 3 месяца назад

      @@eyesofthecervino3366 I wonder if there are some restrictions, particularly if there is federal funding? My tool library doesn't have gas powered tools, because it would require additional insurance and other "hazard" designations. Good luck!

    You have decovered why old folks (like me👵) say, "that used to taste better". Unlike today when sweets (and nearly everything edible) are in abundance year round, when had to wait for the correct season to enjoy the taste of the harvest.

    Open- by splitting down the middle- those vanilla beans and scrape the seeds out, throw all into simmer pot will give you maximum vanilla flavor great video thanks!,❤

      Some people on YT soak the split vanilla beans in liquor for several months, take them out and then use them again to flavor a new batch! So there must be a great deal of flavor in vanilla beans.

    The scraps can also be cooked, puréed and pressed through a sieve as appme sauce or reduced further to applebutter

      Yup, or add some water, cook them again, press again, for a rather bland juice to which you can add spices and some sweetener and can for a nice drink.
