  • To help round out my 18th century "colonial bushcraft" kit, I made my own cocked hat (also called a tricorn hat) from a wide-brimmed ladies hat that is suddenly fashionable this season.
My simple version of a cocked hat uses three ingredients:
    1. A cheap, wide-brimmed hat
    2. A hole punch - you can use an awl, a nail or ice pick
    3. Some leather lacing - you can use shoe laces or ribbon instead.
    Thanks for visiting.

This looks like it would be fairly easy to make and of a better quality than most of the more expensive costume hats I've seen of its type.

Awesome. Now only if tricorn hats weren't considered weird.

You might consider leaving the lacing a little longer and not having the brim touch the crown. This gives it a fuller, larger look. Mine always looked like a kids hat until an old timer gave me this tip. Looks great! Also, I use a leather punch tool that has a wheel on the end that has various sized holes. It’s great for punching the holes.

I love Tricorn hats. You made a lovely one. I don't fancy Ball caps or Cowboys hats or Tilley hats. I wish they'd come back in style.

I've been a fan of the criss cross leather binding. Seems like the cross pattern would hold a pipe. Thanks Mick because DIY hat making has seen a serge in Felt hat blanks. We too have discovered Woman's hats work well.

You just need a floppy hat and turn it into a tricorne. That's it!

The vertical stitchwork is period correct, particularly for the military and militia, as a crossed stitch would not allow for a cockade.

You can try using steam to help shape and stretch the felt to size it better.

Thanks. I have seen professionals use a steam wand to do exactly that. I have not added any kind of stiffener yet, but I might.

went to some millinery how to sites and one lady sewed wire around the edge before covering with ribbon edging. that would keep it's shape if it gets wet. be sure you use non rusting wire. good luck

Spray the hat with shilac, it will be water resistant and hold it's shape.

Props for calling it a "cocked hat," however, you are incorrect on the origins of the term. "Cocked" has nothing to do with the shape of the hat. The term comes from the fact that the hat was traditionally worn with a cockade, which was used for everything from decorative, to political support, to military rank/insignia. The term "tricorn" or "tricorne" did not come about until the mid 19th century, some half a century after they fell out of fashion and replaced with the top hat.

Now, the church squire and the Catholic monk would have disagreed with the editorial content of this scene. Glass was the last one of us to show up. We killed about 45 of them in 3 waves of 15 in close courter combat before they threw 45-60 at us at once on horseback . We killed most of them but the last 15 by halling ass to that cliff and stopping sending the natives who were chasing us over before we finally made the jump. there was about 9- 15 of us. Then we held on to the trees like paratroopers for 3-7 days covered in snow until different natives at the bottom cleared the scene. The we got down spent about an hour and a half getting about half the frozen horse meat and regrouped 2 miles south for another week barried in the snow. Then fell back another 30 miles to the South for a week in cozi Low key snow igloos to join up with 30 more men to wait out the winter for the next 3 months. To again push forward. And Stonewall was amid the 30 man reinforcement with us. And yes, the same us. When winter fell another 60 men finally showed up and this guy talking got 3 months of some Noble R&R.
