trying to decide if I watch these for the how-to value, or the entertainment value. I love the projects, and I love watching the videos. They have a dry sincerity that keeps me wanting more tutorials from our friend Chris who likes to make things.
Your channel is so useful to me! I am a makeupartist in training. Still got 2 years of college left. This is so cool! It saves me a lot of money on coatumes and accesoires! You are the best! And your diy's looks amazing :)
Hey everyone, my preferred paints and supplies change over time. You can check out my current favourites on my Amazon page (affiliate link) www.amazon.com/shop/lostwax
Yeeeay! I'm gad you're back, I kinda really missed your videos. Somehow they became my happy place. Just so - soft, comfy and funny. Creative and inspiring feelgood stuff right there. :D
Well this was wonderful - great humor in here too. I'll have to remember this tutorial to help me make a minuteman outfit to annoy my neighbors with next 4th of July!
I was searching all over the place for a decent Tricorn hat tutorial to make Captain Amelia's hat from Treasure Planet. This is purfect for it and I can't thank you enough for taking the time to make and post this video! Plus, I enjoy your silly humor, totally subscribed! x3
Hola!!! I was just thinking about your videos the other day. It's been a while since I've seen you.. glad to see the latest :) You are an amazing artist. This video is proof again of that. Love this creation. Headed over to you site for the bundle package.. YOU ARE AMAZING.. :) Thanks again.. oh.. as always AWESOME SENSE OF HUMOR!!!
Last night as I was dozing off I had this jolt of excitement about making a pirate hat out of foam… I wished there was a Lost Wax video on such a subject… I quickly picked up my phone and found right away that Lost Wax of course did not let me down😂 (p.s. 4:33 made me laugh hysterically)
LOVE these videos. you explain everything so clearly and love that you make everything as cheap as possible. would you consider making a pirate pistol and showing us
Hey !! Can you make a video for a steampunk Halloween costume ? I make most of your accessories, but I don't know what clothes I could wear :) can you explain us ??
You are one creative fellow!!! I can see you put a lot of time into this video and I totally respect that. I'm a new subbie and find you very creative and entertaining. Thanks for putting a smile on my face 2!
You're stuff is amazing! I can't wait to try this:D! I made some steam punk goggles using your examples and it worked great!! I am so glad you're still making videos and I hope you make them more frequently! :D
amazing as always chris!. and what an amazing idea! use wire, it opens up so much posibilities, i wonder how would it work using it with other patterns. i think the wire can make things easy when is about giving form to something. Is nice to se you're back!
Hey Chris if you go to London you should go to Camden its got lots of steampunk stuff I think that they have a website of the shops by the way love you videos.
Very nice video. Did you try to do the hat part without the overlapping circle on the top and find out that the darts were hard to line up? I am worried that the seam will be obvious from that overlap.
Sometimes you use hot glue and sometimes contact adhesive, does it matter which? Are you using high-temp hot glue? Will low temp work? I can't believe with all the stuff I've made I never thought of using craft foam!! It's SO much cheaper than leather and metal! keep these videos coming!
I used to use contact cement, but since moving from Australia to Canada, I can't find one I like, not to mention I can't just go outside and not breathe the fumes. I actually now really like using hot glue, as long as I have a silicone baking sheet to use with it. One great thing is, if I make a mistake, I can heat up that section with a hairdryer and the glue will soften and I can pull it apart. I would say if you were making them professionally, contact cement is going to be stronger, but I am really surprised how well hot glue works. Can you believe I don't actually know if my glue gun is high or low heat- I bought it at a thrift store when I moved to canada. I think low melt works well enough. I actually plug my glue gun into a dimmer switch so I can adjust the heat to where I like it- just a little higher that what the glue melts at. I don't want it too hot or I have to hold the pieces longer for it to cool down. O.K., that was quite a ramble, hope it helps!
Ahoy Tharrr Me Hearty! Twas a Great Grand Tutorial it was. Thank ye kindly fer the tips, tricks and instrrructional video says I, aye aye says I... Arrrr
You're awesome and your tuto arz awesomes too. I made a steampunk bow and i'm working on the giant head of the keeper from "the evil within" and aaaaaaaall i'm doing is thanks to you. Keep goin' you're the best !
I really want to make a French Pierott hat like what some Harliquin clowns wear. I can't find a pattern anywhere. The closest thing I have found is your tricorn pirate hat. Would it be easy to tweak this pattern to make it more the way I want???
No, you don't need to print all the pages. The reason there are so many in the PDF is because there are 6 different sizes included. Just print the pages you need.
I've never measured my hats with diameter measurements, so I'm not sure what a 5 inch diameter head would look like, but I do include in that pattern sizes that fit from a 19" circumference to 26" circumference. The nice thing about this pattern is that it also scales well, so you could scale it down smaller than that too.
I think you'd want some decent thickness of leather so it's not too floppy. Otherwise, it should work. If it is thin leather, definitely use the wire in the brim.
I get mine at Michaels, it only comes in white and black. Not sure where you are and if they have it near you. I have a link to a roll I found on amazon on my product links page www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
It depends where you are in the world..... I get mine at Michaels- a craft store here in Canada. I also have some links on my website here as well: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/ there's a big black roll on there for $14
The actual hat itself holds up really well, as long as you don't sit on it or something. The weak point would be the paint you use to cover the hat, if you are changing the style and bending it in different shapes, the paint will start to crack a bit. I experimented with mixing my paint in a 50/50 ratio with mod podgy-which dries a bit flexible, and that seemed to work quite well, just needed more coats of paint for coverage.
hey chris Im planning to make this hat with real leather instead of foam and sowing them together instead of glue. do you think that that will work withi this pattern?
I will say a cautious yes... I haven't tried it, and I think it will depend a bit on what kind of leather you use, how well it keeps it's shape. I'd say foam is closest in properties to vegetable tanned leather rather than the soft leather you'd find say on a couch or leather jacket.
Hi Chad, Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. If you want you can go over the foam with a heat gun before you glue it together to seal the foam, but this releases fumes from the foam so I recommend you do it outside. Basically you are going to need to give the foam 3 good coats of something, so sometimes I do the first coat with ModPodge, and the next two with paint, Or sometimes just three of paint. Whatever is cheaper and easier. If your project is just painted, then it doesn't need a top coat, but if you have added a metallic paste finish, then I recommend using any clear water based sealer. Hope that helps.
I actually draft the patterns by hand, I don't start with a 3D model. Have you tried Pepakura? The thing is, I find computers don't necessarily understand where you are going to want your seams and how different materials can be manipulated. Have you tried Pepakura?
That is impressive, I have tried starting by hand, or even winging it through trial and error, but I struggle to imagine a 3d image in 2d parts. Especially curves. I shall have a look at Pepakura, Thanks for the response :)
Just discovered your channel, and I feel so inspired😍 And it is so helpful, since I am into cosplay 😊 Just a quick question, where do you get your craft foam? (Sadly here in Norway we only have tiny sheets... And they are quiiite expensive)
Hmm, I get my foam at a local craft store. If anyone is in Norway, can you help out? I do have some links for foam from Amazon but that is probably too far away from you.....www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
Lost Wax I see, thought that would be the case... Thank you for answering though (and the link) :) I have been looking online, so I will probably try ordering some
Wow, I thought 66cm would cover even the largest of heads. Apparently, once again I was wrong. Keep reminding me, and I will try to get to update this pattern with one larger size yet. Just might not be real soon….
Hi Chris!! This video is so amazing, the final color is so perfect, and give it a perfect texture ♥ Do may I ask, What kind of paint did you use? (Sorry for my bad English)
Hmmm, I am trying to remember- I think I used two different colours- probably burnt sienna and burnt umber, but I can't totally say for sure without trying to replicate it. I wouldn't have mixed the colours together, but done one coat of one colour and another coat of the other colour.

That's sounds good. Thx, in the instant that I can buy the pattern, I'll do my best to make it look great ♥ Seriously, thank you so much for answering ♥
"You can paint 'em brown, you can paint 'em black...the list goes on and on." That was gold haha!
Yeah, I too laughed at that. The humor in these videos is always exquisite.
That opening is the most wholesome piracy I've ever seen.
Nah; Snatching the book and closing it without a bookmark is _worse_ than piracy. Walk the plank, I say!
I don't even make stuff like this, I just watch because you're so darn entertaining! (And it also gives inspiration for completely different projects)
KreeZafi I do that too and too much
my name is William
That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen
So it would seem.
Glad to see you're back! You have been missed. Love these tutorials.

After you make the hat, you could be like capn crunch in his new commercial called, " Be the Cap'n (2020)". Its an awesome commercial.
Could you make a steampunk arm, not the giant hand but the two piece arm armor
Nice hat ,like a real skin
Oh this looks very neat .
You're stuff is amazing! I can't wait to try this:D! I made some steam punk goggles using your examples and it worked great!! I am so glad you're still making videos and I hope you make them more frequently! :D
WOW! It actually looks like leather!
amazing as always chris!.
and what an amazing idea! use wire, it opens up so much posibilities, i wonder how would it work using it with other patterns.
i think the wire can make things easy when is about giving form to something.
Is nice to se you're back!

Hey just wanted to say thanks for being creative and I got really inspired to make things aswell
Awesome!
Chris, can you teach us how to do a flintlock pistol?
I did make a plan for the pistol I used in this video, I will be getting that up probably sometime in sept.
where can you get plans to print please
You should make more steampunk décor! I just came back from your coat rack video, so I am going to make a hat rack for my steampunk room!
Update: Hat rack is complete, and looks great! Thank you so much for the inspiration and tutorial! Keep up the good work
Sometimes you use hot glue and sometimes contact adhesive, does it matter which? Are you using high-temp hot glue? Will low temp work?

i love when i see your channel has a new vídeo :)
Could you do Davy Jones hat from Pirates of Caribean????
Hat or Sombrero
That was so easily done :O wow definitely a new subscriber!!!
I really want to make a French Pierott hat like what some Harliquin clowns wear. I can't find a pattern anywhere. The closest thing I have found is your tricorn pirate hat. Would it be easy to tweak this pattern to make it more the way I want???
I just googled French Pierott hat, and I get a bunch of different hat types, can you explain the look of the one you are wanting to make?
I wasn't able to attach a pic but I went to your FB page and sent you a message along with a pic of one, thanks
hey, i was looking to buy and download the pattern, but do it really need to print off all 65 pages? i just need the pattern pieces....
No, you don't need to print all the pages. The reason there are so many in the PDF is because there are 6 different sizes included. Just print the pages you need.
Is this hat pattern adjustable I would neat a 5 to 5'1/2 inch diameter head
I've never measured my hats with diameter measurements, so I'm not sure what a 5 inch diameter head would look like, but I do include in that pattern sizes that fit from a 19" circumference to 26" circumference. The nice thing about this pattern is that it also scales well, so you could scale it down smaller than that too.
Almost 60K
Which paint did he use
Since you like steam punk stuff so much (and hats!) you should try making something from Steamworld heist! (Maybe pipers hat?) Id love to see it!
Man you're amazing. You're funny and make awesome stuff!
wow dude your back..... cooooooool
I read this and I was like, what? what happened to his back xD
Doh, ha ha h ha
Does someone know if it will work with actual lether ?( mine is thinner )
I think you'd want some decent thickness of leather so it's not too floppy. Otherwise, it should work. If it is thin leather, definitely use the wire in the brim.
once again, awesome! please keep it up
XD That intro was amazing!
ok where do u get the sheet of craft foam I never seen one that big be for
I get mine at Michaels, it only comes in white and black. Not sure where you are and if they have it near you. I have a link to a roll I found on amazon on my product links page www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
That's cool the nearest Michael's is 2 1/2 hours away I can look there thanks😉
can anyone tell me where you would get the craft foam please thank you.
It depends where you are in the world..... I get mine at Michaels- a craft store here in Canada. I also have some links on my website here as well: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/ there's a big black roll on there for $14
I'd like to see some more steampunk videos.
also, how many tries do you need for stuff like that?
I am not quite sure what you are asking, how many tries for which stuff?
Awesome idea~! How well does this hat hold up?
The actual hat itself holds up really well, as long as you don't sit on it or something. The weak point would be the paint you use to cover the hat, if you are changing the style and bending it in different shapes, the paint will start to crack a bit. I experimented with mixing my paint in a 50/50 ratio with mod podgy-which dries a bit flexible, and that seemed to work quite well, just needed more coats of paint for coverage.
love your vids man!
Why do you look like Matthew Machounahey in the thumbnail?
(I don't know if I spelled that right.)
Giving this a like just for the first minute. *watches rest of video*
hey chris
Im planning to make this hat with real leather instead of foam and sowing them together instead of glue. do you think that that will work withi this pattern?
I will say a cautious yes... I haven't tried it, and I think it will depend a bit on what kind of leather you use, how well it keeps it's shape. I'd say foam is closest in properties to vegetable tanned leather rather than the soft leather you'd find say on a couch or leather jacket.
Hi Chris! Do you do any prep to the foam before painting? Do you use any kind of sealant after painting?
Awesome as always!
love these videos
No heat gun? You got me
What software do you use to create these patters? I have been looking for something that can convert 3d images into a flat pattern for a while.
You can also shape it like long john silver's hat from disneys 1958 treasure island or captain red's hat from Pirates of Roman Polanski 1980 something
Yes!
Nice ring, who it's made ?
It's one I made, back when I used to make jewellery.
Lost Wax Will you make a video about it someday?
Ohh , from all your creations i saw , can you please create steampunk chess pieces ? , that would be so cool
Uh, so I tried doing the thing where he swats her book away with his sword, the lady got really mad and wanted her book back.
What thickness is the craft foam?
Gavin Yoder it was 2mm thick.
Chris, sorry to bug you again.. what's the head circumference of the baby size?
No Problem! It's about 40cm
Lost Wax I can't check, she's asleep! Should be perfect eyeing it up (very quietly) I'm so excited, I'll be sure to send u a pic 😊
i prefer contact cement with foam
Very nice!
Do you use high or low density foam?
I just use EVA craft foam for the 2mm foam, it is a reasonably high density.
Just discovered your channel, and I feel so inspired😍 And it is so helpful, since I am into cosplay 😊
Just a quick question, where do you get your craft foam? (Sadly here in Norway we only have tiny sheets... And they are quiiite expensive)
Hmm, I get my foam at a local craft store. If anyone is in Norway, can you help out? I do have some links for foam from Amazon but that is probably too far away from you.....www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
Lost Wax I see, thought that would be the case... Thank you for answering though (and the link) :) I have been looking online, so I will probably try ordering some
Sorry it took so long to answer, it was Halloween over here, and it gets a bit crazy for me.
Lost Wax That is okay, I understand. Hope you had a great night
Awesome video ! But please make a pattern that go up to 67 cm!!! Please, Please
Wow, I thought 66cm would cover even the largest of heads. Apparently, once again I was wrong. Keep reminding me, and I will try to get to update this pattern with one larger size yet. Just might not be real soon….
Did you act in the flash tv show? Episode 9 of season one
Not that I can remember.
I love your videos!
Thanks For This Film!
Hi Chris!!
This video is so amazing, the final color is so perfect, and give it a perfect texture ♥
Do may I ask, What kind of paint did you use?
(Sorry for my bad English)
Hmmm, I am trying to remember- I think I used two different colours- probably burnt sienna and burnt umber, but I can't totally say for sure without trying to replicate it. I wouldn't have mixed the colours together, but done one coat of one colour and another coat of the other colour.
Lost Wax
Thanks so much, I'll try that way ♥
You know what, I think on the second coat with the different colour, I also used a paper towel to kind of take some colour away creating a bit of texture.
That's sounds good.
Thx, in the instant that I can buy the pattern, I'll do my best to make it look great ♥
Seriously, thank you so much for answering ♥
You're welcome! Have fun making!
