Hello friends,
and welcome to another by request song tutorial! In this session I'll be breaking down Cat Stevens 1970 classic "Father and Son." I'll take you through a bit of music theory to discover the chord progressions, and strumming options for the verses, and also break down some of Cat's signature licks and tricks. Let's get started!

Another incredible lesson -so detailed- your lessons are so complete. Everything including strumming patterns- music theory- vocals- and all the little signature licks. This is the best lesson by far-I really wanna learn that solo I think I saw you have a lesson for that

Hi Rob. Love your tutorials. This is the second and I’m truly grateful. One comment to consider for next time. The in-verse lick, I think you call it Lick 1, off the D chord. At about 11:30...you go through that pretty quick and it took me a while of rewinding, stopping, rewinding, to figure out what you’re doing. My request is, anything with finger picking, Go Really Slowly. You just need to do it once, but Do It Slowly. It will not take you longer and it will save me and maybe others frustration. Thanks for these amazing tutorials. And I find your musical talents a bonus.

I heartily agree Jeff, Rob’s vocals certainly caught my attention. I was a typical young, rebellious college student who identified quite closely with this song. Finding this tutorial on RUclips threw me back 50 years, and to a specific point in my life. Not too proud to admit to the eerie emotions this song dredged from my memories of a half century ago.

I play this song and it's tough to sing because the vocal begins in the low octave in the key of G which is sung in baritone and then switches into a tenor. It shows you how gifted a vocalist Cat Stevens is.

Ah, that's quite the important skill. I'll have to think on it for a while. But I can tell you that a big part of that is knowing which chords are in a key. The rest is using your ear, and learning to recognize the sound and feeling that certain chord changes provide. Thanks for the request!

Second chord is a D., not a Bm, yet.... On the high part, it's a B minor. Just an observation. I see this a lot when folks play this. If you listen to it, you'll say "Damn, he's right" :-)

To expound….while the father is singing, the chord is a D. When the son sings, the chord is. Bm. It’s the relative minor that makes the song.

Personally I preferred the lessons before the vocals, feels more like a performance I like to hear the guitar peice on its own or without a microphone with vocals, but that aside teaching wise very good
