The first time I heard that song was in 1978, I was 16. I was that young man. Today I am 58 and I have three boys 22, 20, and 16. hearing it today made me remember many feelings of my youth, but over all it has reminded me that my boys are looking for their own space in this world, and I need to let them do it. A great song, a great rendition by DM. Cheers.
Antonio Z well said brother. It’s such a balance between wanting to show them the way to letting them find the way on their own.
I lost my Dad in 1969.I am now 70 years old and the first time I heard this song was in the 70’s. After all these years I still feel this healing conversation. Thanks Cat for the tune , and thank you Dave for reminding me of the healing moment.
Been listening w/o choice, but so grateful, since it came out. Ty M&D for great taste in music!
Me. 3 girls 29.28&19 last one with Downs Syndrome.
@King_of_Dragons listen to some Jim Croce too. His Son plays the guitar also. And his wife has a restaurant In San Diego called “Croce” saw Jim and Cat together.
I lost my son 9 weeks ago to PTSD... He was a wonderful son..A hell of a Marine..A husband and father...he leaves behind a wife and my 2 grandchildren...Bowen..son..i love you...
I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my son too this year but to mental illness. God bless you.
I'm sorry for your loss & I thank you for your son's service, my brother is a marine also. Keep his memory alive for your grandchildren and may God be with your family during this time.
So sorry for your loss. God bless your son for serving our country. The loss of a child of any age is so painful. I hope your memories of him will help you heal along with your two grandchildren he left behind. Hang in there.
I’m sorry for your loss. I too struggle endlessly with PTSD, depression and was a Marine. Please know that a lot of us experienced severe trauma and I still can’t explain why I am incapable of overcoming and succeeding over this mental illness.
God bless you and your family.
Didn’t know I needed this
I'm listening and I am loving it!!! ❤❤❤😊
Cat Stevens’ music affected me when I was a teenager in the ‘70s...still does..
Ditto Steve!
I can't believe I just found this. My two favorite artists put together. Yusuf and Dave Matthew. What a treat.❤
It’s wild how perfect Dave’s voice is for this song. I’d love to hear him cover some more of Cat Stevens’ stuff.
I would love an entire Dave Matthews album that covered Cat Stevens
Indeed
He is great, as is Cat Stevens, but he us just singing in the same register as the original?
Love it. Cat Stevens though appreciated by many is hugely under appreciated mainstream! So much personality and uniqueness.
A delightful rendition
I’ve never heard anyone come close to the original... until now. Dave owns that
I was 18 when Tea for the Tillerman was released and remember how I thought this song summed up my relationship with my dad. Now I’m 70 and would give anything to have this conversation either my son who passed away this year
Really sorry to hear that Tom.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you’re doing ok.
I can't imagine your pain Tom. Hope you'll be ok.
Much grace till you meet him again in resurrection.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Dave Mathews is a musical genius. His voice, but also his original music is iconic. Love Dave.
Super Dave, thank you xxxxx
I lost my father a few years ago, and I was missing him a lot today. This hit home. Thank you so much ❤️
Same James. Same.
Same
Dave Matthews lost his father at age 10 as well.
Dave was quoted veryyyyyy early on in his career when asked about his love for the acoustic guitar something along the lines of "it's easy to travel with and play anywhere....and when you can play Father and Son all of a sudden you're making out a lot more"
Nice! So true......
Hey dad u listening love u wish we spent more time
No regrets, think I’ll call my pops today. Thank you Dave 👊🤗
Heard this one a few times with dad. He had my first Dave Matthews CD as well, Under the Table. He passed away in June this year. Only 62, dementia. Alchoholism is a dangerous addiction that so many people battle. My dad was the best person to have adventures with. Thanks for this new gem.
I also lost my dad this year to Alzheimer's at 61. He used to sing me this song. Hang in there Joseph hope your doing alright
(hug)
My dad passed away suddenly in August at 58. He struggled with alcoholism for the last 10 years. I’ll never understand it, but I miss him and think of him often. Great cover.
One of the best covers I've ever heard, well done. Greetings from Germany 👏🎄🙋♂️
Maybe you want to check his band out: The Dave Matthews Band. He’s a star!
One guy, one guitar. No high tech electronic shit. Simple song. Brilliant lyrics and music, absolutely beautiful. Thank you. Let’s bring real music back.
I think this is the first time Iv ever seen him play “regular” chords
How is it that the mere timbre of his voice and the sound of strings can evoke tears, emotions, regardless of the lyric? As a listener, it’s almost as though your own movie starts playing in your head, your memories.. as always, THANK YOU DAVE.
Dave is so great at covers.....this is a sensational song by one of my favorite musicians covered by one of my favorite musicians.
I was a Cat Stevens fan in the 70,s. I was devastated when he chose a different path in life. I missed him but it was the life that he wanted. I’m so happy for him but so glad he is back singing so that another generation can enjoy the experience I had as a young man. Play on my friend.
Brilliant. He's stays true to the original but at the same time it's all dave.
The only word possible is brilliant!
You nailed it. Couldn’t have said it any better.
🥰🥰🥰
I discovered Cat Stevens the year I graduated high school at 17. My father died when I was 4 and after being in a foster home there was a small amount of money for me from SSI and I got a funky, old apartment over a grocery store. It was sparsely furnished and I spent the last bit on a nice stereo and a collection of albums. Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, mostly newer folk with a little Grand Funk Railroad thrown in, all of which still dot my playlists. Later I remember my lovesick 13 yr old playing How Can I Tell You to death. Nothing like Cat Stevens to calm & soothe the heart and mind during covid. Dave nailed it. 👏👏👏
Very, very good! Thanks!
As a dad, I could not have asked for a better birthday present.
C'mon keep that Cat Stevens tune alive.
Man I love this!
How have i not seen this before. Amazing.
Oh man...made me cry Dave...Was such a Cat groupie when I was a youngin....Nice job!!!!
My dad introduced me to Cat when I was like 6, this was his favorite song. Lost him in ‘04. Played this and the Wind at his funeral and watching one of my all time favorite musicians play this song brought tears to my eyes. Father and Son with a lil Dave twang. Love it!
that might be the best Cat Stevens cover I've ever heard.
What a great song by Cat Stevens and wow......what a great song for Dave. Watching my children grow and now have jobs and children. It's a pleasure to watch them grow and they now like Cat Stevens, Dave Matthews and this song. Cats in the cradle as well!
Beautiful Dave! Being an old man and thinking of my kids and g.kids this song means more and more everytime I hear it! ❤👍✌
Thanks Dave! You’re truly special to so many people. Thanks for making a difference in my life.
feel like the entire time dave is thinking about his coffee mug across the room
Awesome cover. He does this incredible song justice. Just another time to reflect on how talented Dave is.
Timeless beautiful classic. I wish I had a voice like Dave.
Providence
Wow...we'll, if Cat can't do it, I'll take this version every time!

Thanks Dave for honoring Cat- beautiful job. Music is truly timeless!
I'm not a big Dave Matthews fan but that's the best cover of Father and Son I've ever heard. Bravo Dave.
This makes me cry 😭
Perfect moment to find this song!!!
Oh, RUclips, my sweetheart, how did you know I needed to hear this tonight?
Very well done. I have been a fan of Cat Stevens for decades.
Holy shit! I know I'm a nerd but I have Dave and Cat playing at the same time. It's nice.

An old great song that honestly I couldn't stand anymore is suddenly fresh again! loved it!
This touches me..I lost my Father to COVID19 15 days after Dave recorded this ..means so much..and I miss my Father..my best friend..
That’s the first time I’ve ever sat down and listened to the lyrics. So beautiful.
I was the young man then too. This song always puts me in mind of that saying: :By the time a young man begins to realize that his Father MAY have been right, he has a son of his own who thinks he's wrong."
Beautiful rendition of a classic song. Stayed true to the original, and added your own DMB style. Just really good all the way around.
WOW! That sounded great. I love that song and Dave sounds great.
This is great. And not gonna lie, I would not be familiar with this song if not for Guardians of the Galaxy part 2 during Yondu's funeral.
Fortunate to have seen Cat back in 75. Loved playing this song back to back with Neil Young’s Old Man
Love this version. Father of 2 under 2 and child of the 90's. This song and cover are amazing.
Thank you.
Thanks dave
Beautiful. Thank you.
Beautiful. Thanks Dave. Such an emotive song which I've always loved.
What an absolutely amazing song and a great cover for Dave to perform…
As I new father, this was just what the doctor ordered…
Just beautiful
Almost as good as Stevens' original
New favorite song to wear out.

F*%^ it just made me cry for like 10 min straight... beautiful!
Perfect!!
+1. Gawd damn that's good.
Surprisingly good! Few could do justice to such an iconic song.
Beautiful guitar for a beautiful voice.
My father use to say he would gladly give his life to save mine…… I never understood what he meant…… until I had a son of my own…. and I would gladly give my life for his…. I now understand my old man ….. I love and miss you every day
Very nice. Thanks Merry Christmas
Miss ya Yondu. Love ya brother
Beautiful version of a great song.
I saw Cat Stevens in 1974 and again in 2015. Your rendition of this amazing song is great.
His acoustic shows with Tim Reynolds are amazing.
My father showed me this song when I was just a kid and here I am now, just months away from being a father myself. I don't know why this is so emotional to me but listening to Dave singing this song just gets me...
Gold!!!!
Good job Dave. Now 43 and love your voice and music. Thanks for being part of my life. Take care sir.
Oh wow, how am I just now seeing this?? It's lovely and I am melting. :-)
Hello happy holiday and how are you doing today 😃
exquisite! thank you!
A great cover of a great song.
Grew up listening to Cat Stevens on the family turntable console. Heartfelt rendition honoring the original and adding Dave’s unique style. My dad left us a short while ago; miss him every day. 😢❤️
One of my favorites, done by one of my favorites!! Win, win!
This is the best rendition, so far of a timeless classic I've heard. Cat stevens composition, lyrics and melody is a grab hold on the first listen! Dave matthews never goes wrong making a rendition as he pushes those exact notes while incorporating his beautiful harmonies and riffs on those vocals. ❤️ As subtle it gets🙏🏽
A favorite doing a favorite.
saved to my jams list .
This is a beautiful song and so moving. Dave sings it so well, his guitar, his voice. Thank you, Dave.
Love me some Dave Matthews❣
Voice sound great. That was really nice.
I’ve always loved this song so much. One of my fav Cat Stevens songs. Dave is always amazing. Thanks for posting this.
Amazing!
