  • Bruce Gary of The Knack once said he was disappointed to find out that 10 of his favorite drummers were Hal Blaine. The credits are amazing. The Beach Boys, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Carpenters, The Monkees, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., to name a few. This 60's Ludwig drum kit is referred to by Hal Blaine as "his babies".

    Hal Blaine was the first drummer whose sound I could identify. When we were kids, my best friend had an album by the Fifth Dimension and I had to know who the drummer was. I never forgot his name after seeing the musician credits on that album (I believe he played on all their hits). From then on, I listened to many of the artists in this video's description and said to myself, "Yeah, that's Hal Blaine." I even bet my friend that it was Hal playing drums on America's "Ventura Highway" and he ended up paying for the next album I bought. What A legacy this man left! He even played on Steely Dan's "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)".

      Well said, Bobby! I've told anyone who would listen for decades now that Hal Blaine's dynamic drumming on the outro to 1975's "Any World" makes it the most exhilarating finish to any Steely Dan recording. It's always been a guessing game whether Hal played that one session on the "Katy Lied" album because drummer Jeff Porcaro overslept.

      Could be, but Steely Dan were really perfectionists so I bet they wanted Hal Blaine for that specific track. I don’t think any other band has had so many legendary drummers appear on their records.

      The 5th Dimension were fortunate in being able to rely on Hal Blaine and Joe Osborn for all rhythms tracks throughout the 10 years of the "original" group. Some of the 5th Dimension recordings I recommend people listen to for great Blaine/Osborn performances are: "Lovin' Stew", "Dimension 5", "Winds of Heaven", and "The Hideaway".

      I tend to enjoy studio drummers the most because of their tastefulness. Benny Benjamin, Uriel Jones, and “Pistol” Allen of Motown Records, Roger Hawkins of The Swampers/Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Al Jackson, Jr of the house band for Stax Records, Booker T and the MG’s, Hal Blaine, Jim Keltner, and Jim Gordon, and Earl Palmer of The Wrecking Crew. Then there’s Sam Lay and Fred Below of Chess Records, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Earl Young of ARCTIC records and PIR, Josh Freese, and many more I am forgetting.

    It wasn't until actually a few years ago I realized how all the 60's hits were done by mostly studio musicians, like Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye, and others. All those years I was trying so damn hard to sound as good as the records (I was 16-20 during that time).....I didn't realize the pressure I was putting myself under, competing with grown people, who had a lot more musical experience.

    • @mattkaustickomments
      @mattkaustickomments 3 года назад +1

      @@demonicsweaters It’s 100% true. The source is Hal himself in interviews found on YT - I think from Joe’s channel here as a matter of fact. Buddy’s daughter Cathy is a singer and producer. Buddy hired Hal to play on at least one of her records - probably her debut album. Hal claims that when friends asked Buddy why he didn’t play on the record and hired Hal instead, Buddy said “Because I wanted the best!” Though that may be true, I think he knew Hal would be better at matching whatever style of music she was doing, and he probably didn’t want her record to be a “Buddy Rich record” that featured his “lead drumming” and overshadowed her. Buddy knew Hal was “the best” session man to nail it right off the rip. EDIT. I found an article on line from Modern Drummer Magazine from 1981 where Hal explains what Buddy meant as being “the best” and it’s right in line with what I said.

    Francis,
    Hal says that his first recording session was with a disc jockey called "Bill The Bellman". The first "big time" session was at Capitol Records with Tommy Sands. When Phil Spector put together the "Wall of Sound", the success he had caused his superstitions to set in and he continued to hire the same musicians for all of his sessions. "The Wrecking Crew" was made up of those musicians and others who came and went through the years. You get a different opinion of who exactly was in "the crew" depending on who you talk to. Since The Wrecking Crew was made up of such a large group of musicians, it was only the Phil Spector or Brian Wilson sessions that utilized a large group of them. Hal explains that there were so many sessions going on every day. They couldn't play all of them. Earl Palmer would cover three of them, Hal would cover three of them and Jim Gordon would have three as well. Joe Osborn, Lyle Ritz, Bill Pitman, Larry Knechtel and later, Carol Kaye would play bass. Hal is always quick to point out that it wasn't just him playing the drums on everything.

    • @jaymcdowell5209
      @jaymcdowell5209 9 лет назад +1

    I listen to a lot of drum stuff on YT. There's a lot of debate over whether this drummer or that drummer is the best of all time and I generally stay out of it since it is such a subjective thing. Like everyone else, I have my favorites. But I have to say that if your criteria is who played in the widest variety of musical situations and not just played the part but created significant original musical contributions while doing so, many of them truly iconic then it's an easy choice. It has to be Hal Blaine.
