    This UVC light can be used to kill Bacteria/Viruses on N-95 type face masks. VERY carefully remove the face mask, then place the exposed side of the mask in very close proximity to the UVC light for 20 mins to be sure everything has been inactivated/killed. **DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT A UVC LAMP!**

      @@dlandes14 UVC damages plastic and rubber with repeated use. For your mask, unscrew the filters, spray the filter openings with the 70% alcohol and allow to fully dry, then wash the mask with warm soapy water. You can also spray the entire mask(with filters removed) with lysol disinfecting spray, allow it to sit 2-3 mins, this rinse off with warm soapy water.

      @@electronicsNmore do you know if there is a way to clean the pink disk type p100 filters without ruining them? I am hoping to find some of the plastic cartridge type filters so I can just clean the outside plastic parts but the pink disk filters are all I have for now. For context, I work in the ER and plan on using a full face shield over the mask to hopefully add another layer of protection to the mask. And also, I saw they make UV devices for phones and CPAP masks and things. Wouldn't hey be damaged as well? I appreciate your advice!

      I had been thinking about making a device containing a UVC light that could have household air circulated through it to kill viruses and bacteria. About 20 years ago I had a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze and it had a UV light of some sort but I found the unit to be ineffective overall. My first question is how long would a virus that's in the air have to be exposed to UVC light in order for it to kill it? I can imagine the device would only only expose a certain amount of air for 1 second or so. Do you have any thoughts on this or are there devices on the market similar to this that have proven to be effective?

    I have a UV-C battery wand, I don’t know how many watts it is. I just wave the wand over the keyboard and ipad and food preparation area. You mentioned that it takes 2-3 minutes to kill bacteria, does this mean that briefly waving the wand around is ineffective?I usually wave it over things 3-4 times taking say 5 seconds. To determine the watts (or power) I have to measure the current consumed. Not sure if the tube is a high voltage discharge tube.

    How do you calculate the exposure times needed to kill something like SARS-CoV-2 while taking into account such parameters as wattage and distance from surface? Is there a way to calculate how much do lamp reflectors improve exposure times? I've been trying to find a formula for the past 2 days and I got nothing.. I don't want to underexpose surfaces I am trying to disinfect, but I also don't want to run these UVC light for unnecessarily long times due to ozone production.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 года назад +1

      The UVC light I have doesn't produce ozone, or extremely little. If I place my 9W UVC lamp within 1 or 2 inches( 2.5 cm - 5 cm) for at least 2-3 minutes, that should be enough, but to be really sure, I do 20 mins. I'm sure there's a formula based on distance and light intensity, but I'm unaware of it. Thanks for watching! Please share the video link with others.

    I ordered a 7w aquarium lamp to make a box enclosure to sterilize the few surgical masks I have because I dont have an oven to use. How do I determine what size box I make, how far the bulb should be from the mask & how long is long enough to leave it inside to kill the virus. I'm worried about leaving it in too long or sitting the mask too close to the bulb because I want to avoid degrading the polypropylene material of the mask.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 года назад +1

      Hi Teri. Line the entire box with aluminum foil, place the lamp at the top center 3" away from the mask. It should only take a few minutes, but to be safe I'd do 20 mins. Suspend the mask in the center of the reflective box.

    I love the one you made. Do you think you could give a few tips to someone looking to make a portable, battery powered version? (Possibly even a tutorial?) Like what would I need to light to a UV bulb like that as a base and how would I know what battery requirements the base would need and/or how can I control that? I had a weird idea: i thought it would be cool to be able to use an old vape mod (vaping) that uses a rechargeable 18650 batterie. The other benefit would be easy charging for the 18650 battery, as it can be charged within the mod with just a cable.

    The comment three to five minutes is actually quite a bit of time. The exposure time is measured by wattage and distance mostly. And so this 9W lamp should only need about 15 second exposure at most at the short distance that your video shows for sterilization. Little half watt lamps only take about 12 second exposures at one-half inch from the sanitizing spot, according to the directions my unit requires that I purchased at a local merchant.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +1

      Viewers should be aware that companies such as Coke use UV to sterilize their water which is forced in piping and QUICKLY exposed to UV as it flows. The water travels at a rapid rate. Pathogens' cells and nucleus do not need much exposure time to UV so only seconds are needed at 15W on up and at a distance of only a few inches (less than a foot). Too much exposure time is not only a waste but surrounding area can be damaged depending on what is exposed such as skin or plastics. The video here shows a really resourceful person making a clever product that is very useful. I'm just sharing valuable information collected over many decades of the use of UV and research. I realize manufacturers give exposure time but it is very inconsistent. If one looks at the function of UV they would realize how quickly cells are damaged by this concentration of UV that is not available in sunlight like so many on youtube are sharing. This shortwave energy is absorbed by the ozone layer which is in jeopardy around the globe today in spots.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 года назад

      No. Those units use UVA. Sunlight is UVA & UVB. UVB kills, but it takes hours of full unobstructed sunlight from directly overhead. Thanks for watching! Be sure to watch the video I uploaded to my channel yesterday.

    What about uvb ? will that still work on virus but a little slower?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 года назад +1

      It works, but not nearly as fast. A fairly strong UVC light damages bacteria and viruses in 2-3 minutes, UVB could take 20 minutes, and UVA maybe 1-3 hours.

    Is this good in sanitizing a mobile phone? We all know that our mobile phones become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. This process is repeated multiple times throughout the course of our daily activities. And for this reason, I use atom cleanse device. It has seemed to do the best job at keeping my mobile devices bacteria and germ free.
