  • Today I'm having a look at the Michelin Pro 4 Service Course Grip Tires and these are a lightweight tire that is reinforced with aramide, that's the generic term for kevlar, a woven material that also happens to be bullet proof. The tire itself is made out of a new rubber compound that michelin claims provides 15% more grip in the wet compared to their already quite grippy Pro 4 Service Course Tire. Using their experience in Moto GP, the Pro 4 is shaped more like an egg to give you a wider band of road contact when cornering and the tire features slides that grip into the tarmac on a turn.
These are essentially marketed towards the commuter in regards to wet weather performance and puncture resistance and weigh just 20 grams more than the already ultra light Pro 4 Service course tire at 220grams per tire. I took them out for a spin on a very wet day in Sydney and brake tested them on leaf and dirt covered road to start off with. They held well without skidding and with that I took to break testing at higher speeds in between the bike lane and connecting streets. They rolled well through city streets at high speed and still provided comfort on slightly bumpier paths like the one found on the harbour bridge. These tires give you confidence to really stand and accelerate in the wet whereas my previous Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tires would simply skid. This comes in handy when you want to quickly accelerate out of a roundabout without decking yourself.
Whilst I was unwilling to test the maximum cornering speed I could achieve in the wet, the tire gives plenty of confidence in adverse conditions. Whilst the amount of grip this tire provides is substantial, the downside is that you'll be replacing tires more often. For the commuter who rides in all weather conditions and wants the best protection from flats, this is in my opinion, the best option on the market.

Hello, I want to buy the 23c version. Do you have any new comments about tires in general?

I would actually opt for something else when it comes to grip, these tires just don't cut it for me, I did some testing with a 28c version and it had less grip than my specialized turbo pro's in a 25c in both wet and dry, they skid out on a wet turn I have taken multiple times on my turbos and they cost more...
