- Unlike other sports, in swimming, trash talk can surprisingly give your rivals an edge. This video explores why psychological strategies common in team sports might backfire in the pool, especially in high-stakes events like the Olympics' 4 x 100 freestyle relay.

I trash talked someone before 800 and he lapped me💀
😂😂
😢😅😂
😂😂
Ngl, deserved 😂
how is this even possible, what is you 800m time?
The best feeling is when someone from another sport says they can beat you at your own game, then precedes to get humbled big time.
Nganou vs Fury?
@@westphalianstallion4293 Nganou won that won so no. Referee gave a 22 second countdown to Fury so it's win by knockout.
In swimming u don't have air to trashtalk
What about Alexander popov? He famously trash talked people right before the races and was unbeaten for 8 years. I think are some instances of trash taking working in swimming but the instances of it going wrong are far greater.
That's good. I was trying to think who it worked for. I didn't think about Popov 🧐
@SkillsNT Popov is an actual fish though so he doesn’t count
That's why Popov is the sprint goat.
i would argue there's a much bigger reason sun yang beat mack horton💀
💉💉💉
Everybody uses steroids, it’s just that he was more obviously using them lol.
I used to do the opposite of trash talking when I was swimming competitively. I was a "poor-mouther". I'd talk myself down in the clerk-of-course/bullpen when you were getting organized with other swimmers. I'd talk about how I wasn't feeling good, how I was tapering for another meet and I was just hoping to put forward a decent showing.
Worked well for me.
That's funny.
Before a race, everyone walks out with head down lol
I feel like when someone trash talks to me i my adrenaline increases my physical strength by 500%
This is a terrific channel
“If you want to beat me, you have to pass me “
Forward this to connor mcgregor 😆
True
Is he swimming now? 🤯
@@SkillsNTjust chilling in his yacht 😁
hmm, I would kind of argue that the examples might be more arguments for correlation vs causing the opponent to win. but it is hard to say exactly how much trash talking affects a particular individual. it is a little hard to measure over a 4 year period too. the other thing I kind of think about swimmers is that (other than relay) swimming is such an individual sport. you don't generally feel like you have a team that is depending on you and also in swimming sometimes I feel more than other sports like I am really competing against myself. so I kind of feel like trash talking may have less effect bc a lot of the time I'm thinking, am I performing at my most efficient and doing better than last time or doing better than last practice? I'm probably not good at trash talking bc I'd take it seriously (and feel mean) and probably good trash talkers are half joking (it's showmanship or daring someone or creating drama for media hype)
awesome❤❤❤❤
You right
omg this is sooo trueee
It works. Alex Popov.
there's been some aussie and american womens' swim drama :)
Trash talking is swimming just inspires the swimmer to swim faster
I am a swimmer.About 4 years ago we had a trainer in our club that doesnt even trained us, and he said something about: ''if you are not good enough, you can go to the showers.'' Then i Got 100m free in cca the same time i swim it right now after 4 years. Trashtalking doesnt make you swim slower, it makes you faster.
A notorious swimming trash talker myself! Switched to Water Polo and have won games with Trash!
Very interesting
True...but still its makes the sport more entertaining if you back your shit up.
Why reupload
I made a mistake
I don't know, in Greece amateur sports (anything else than football/soccer and basketball) are so neglected that we only try to support each other, no matter which sport we do, because we're all broke, and we all know it
Bro I give people good luck on races they don't even have to be on my team
Someone trashed talked me before the 400IM and I went on to lap him 😂
Oh I think he commented here earlier 🤣
Im surprised. Trashtalk done well will raise adrenaline levels. Raised adrenaline will reduce stamina.
the problem here is that trash talk sells. Stay quiet doesn’t, thats because nobody watch swimming and the 99% of swimmer have no incomes.
When Australian swimmer Ryan cockroach starts trash talking sun yang, he inevitably loses! I tried at my pool the other day with my teammate who swims a second behind me and he beats me.
Jordan was a trash talker... He lost interest in regular season games so he would trash talk to give himself something to get excited for. Jordan is well known for his trash talking. Someone who performed better under more pressure. Horrible example.
Try trash talk under the water, may work.
Because it's hard to understand any kind of talking in the water.
So why does it work in other sports but fail in this one? I mean in boxing it is almost an accepted thing all the way through training for a fight, yet those hearing the trash talk pre-weigh in are not all suddenly training harder and then beating their mouthy rivals in the ring. Where is the distinction coming from here?
In most examples it's the underdog doing the trash talking to try to put off the favourite. It's not really surprising that they go on to lose. Swimming is one of those sports where (unless it's very close) it's usually possible to place the winners according to their recent best times. Trash talking is mostly irrelevant, as swimmers will probably forget it as they focus on their race and doing what they need to do.
Cool video but you should change the title since you don't actually explain WHY it doesn't work in Swimming. It's frustrating.
It does work you just use fauled examples
this a why alpha male is dangerous type of video lmao
How did you put Canada ahead of GB of a potential chance of winning 😂 we have 4 guys who will go 47.5 or faster 😂
Nobody talks to me😔
It’s cuz you’re underwater
Yeah because you'll drown. I want to see someone who can say profanities under water or every time they take a breath and time to for when their opponent takes a breath. for 1500 meters they take like 20 minutes to complete that. if you're about to drown yourself, and deprive yourself oxygen for 20 minutes, you don't care what people say. Holding your head under water while fully exerting yourself is something that your brain gives priority to. i don't care who you are if you're going all out your brain is screaming "BREATH!!! BREATH DAMN IT!!! WE'RE GOING TO DIE! WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO ME? YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE US RETARDED LIKE MICHAEL PHELPS, AND RYAN LOCHTE. STOP!"
what about water polo? I think you might swallow water if you do that too. it's not something that you can distract the person and they miss like in baseball. you want to be distracted swimming. "hey, swimmer swimmer swimmer. swim, swimmer swimmer."
