It doesn't get any better than this. Rachmaninoff repeatedly asked Horowitz to play this Concerto. This is the way it would have sounded. The Cadenza at 10:40 is superhuman.
NEVER seen a so great mastery of a music instrument, besides he gives impression to play almost effortless the most difficult passages. I'm astonished and delighted.
+Antonio Paterno I completely agree with you!

i love the little gesture he makes with his left hand at 8:50
Gabriel Bustos what does his gesture mean?
@@douglasyiuchinglok307 yes😂
Astonishing!
Terrific pianist's playing!
Infernal virtuosity galopping, the most lyrical, tender voice in singing passages, apocalyptic chords, Rembrandt's chiaroscuri.
Marvel.
I just love that split second at 26:22 when it seems he's JUST about to have a memory lapse- or basically play the solo material from the same passage earlier on in the movement. But he reigns himself in just in time. A vintage 'Pletnev moment!
What a master!
Scary!
Amazing !
Pletnev gives a benchmark performance of this Concerto, 2nd only to the composer. His slow movement is like hearing the music for the first time.A revealation. The conductor even lets you hear the triangle in the last movement, as it keeps the beat while the piano plays "Staccatissimo", pure magic.
Sublime!
This is magnificent! No trace of the cold, over-analytical or overindulgent playing that I sometimes detect in his recordings...he clearly has a wonderful grasp on Rachmaninoff's style!
pianopera He is younger here. I think the kind of eccentric playing you describe must be a more recent phenomenon. Here everything is well-balanced, phrases beautifully shaped, and what bearing! He makes one of the best cases for this underplayed (though maybe not in Russia) but wonderful concertos I have ever heard.
James Vaughan Yes, I agree, and that is also thanks to the very sensitive accompaniment, a great ensemble, the timing is immaculate...when there is good "chemistry" between conductor and soloist, they don't even have to look at each other!
He makes an EVEN BETTER case for the Tchaikovsky 2nd Concerto. No one can touch him when he's on like that. Kissin is not even in the same league, seriously. This guy understands sound and power
no i think hough is better at this one he has a harsh sound and trying too much
Great !!!

très bien! Magnifique
The most convincing interpretation of this piece I've heard, after Rachmaninov himself of course.
don't forget Byron Janis with Kondrashin.
ADGO hmm... can't seem to find that recording of Janis with Kondrashin on youtube, only with Reiner. Could you maybe tell me where to find that recording?
Byron Janis with Fritz Reiner is possibly equal to this immortal performance by Pletnev.
the second movement ... constant sense of wonder like trifonov said
bravo
no one can play this concerto well except pletnev
There are other great performances, such as by Byron Janis (with Kondrashin) and Joseph Villa, but for sure Pletnev is special
it is a matter of practicing it a lot and ... after a few years brilliant results will appear.
of course, Lugansky plays it even better then Pletnev!
@@ADGORichter's recording is also one to contend with...
Handsome:)
Pletnev owns this piece, leaving most everyone else in the shade.
This is the piece from MP that returned me to classical music although the actual recording on my CD is with Libor Pesek and Philharmonia Orchestra 1992
As Raxmaninoff himself said: if my concertos were parked next to each other in my garage in California in the order they were composed, they would be 2 Ford T models on either side of two Rolls Royces...
Sorry I'm not an automovilistic fan, is he saying that 2 and 3 are more than 1 and 4?
@@etcetc5592 i think Rax was saying not about the chronological order, but about the quality...
i.e. that the Rax 3 and Rax 2 were a lot better than Rax 1 and Rax 4. Unless Rax was mad and somehow thought 1 and 4 (which he made revisions to) were better...
coronovirus concerto (note the spaces between the players)
This is from a 1983 concert.. It says in description.
3rd movement: 20:58
1st movement cadenza: 10:26
12:35
1st mvt 0:31
2nd mvt 13:29
3rd mvt 20:58
That first movement was sealed with dozens of notable coughs. PWG

oh, the triangle, apparently..
27:26 - whats that annoying ringing sound ADGO?
Music is feeling be vegan
OK he can play really fast. But it sounds so automatic. And that poor piano. He beat the shit out of it. No thanks.
Play it better then :D
Are you kidding? He nailed it! And I mean not only playing fast and loud, he really brings out the passionate and desperate side of the work. And his sound quality is magnificent.
