  • This video will analyze the psychological aspects of liminal spaces as they appear in Dr. Loboto's Labyrinth in Psychonauts 2. Doublefine have crafted a character and a level that is loaded with depth, metaphors and symbolism for understanding liminality, perception, and consciousness. Join me as I explore it to a pretty nauseating degree!
If you liked this analysis... get help. But maybe also consider sticking around for more deep dives. High chance I cover more of these wonderfully designed levels!

I think Loboto's mind can best be summarized with one quote from the original:
    "A _Mental_ Dentist Office."
It's starts out seemingly all Office, than slowly transitions into the Mental part, and then quickly transitions into the whole Dentist shtick in the most Loboto way possible.

Finally someone talks about this. I've come across so many backrooms theory videos that mention that the backrooms may be a representation of the collective unconscious or a domain that houses all our deepest and darkest fears, but they never mention anything about Psychonauts. Because it's the first thing that came to my mind as I listened to those theories. The Loboto stage even perfectly replicates the most infamous backrooms level with the flooring, walls, lighting, etc. There's no way Tim and the rest of Double Fine conceptualized the first level without looking into liminal spaces first. With that in mind, the Psychonauts are basically people that can noclip in and out of the backrooms at will.

Thanks my friend! Appreciate the support! I wish more videos would talk about the psychological appeal of liminal spaces in general actually. But the Carl Jung perspective I think is a big core of how Double Fine imagined these perspectives. Everyone has different versions of how they see the psychic 6, there are multiple dimensions to everyones personality, and there's a heavy emphasis on identity. For me it was definitely the red lines that made me ultimately say, "woah how could they not have been thinking about the backrooms when they wrote this!" but who knows!

That's not a bad way of viewing the backrooms; as a sort of metaphor representing a person's mind-scape.
So if you imagine the backrooms as the collective conscience and/or a representation of your own mind, then the people that accidentally noclip into the backrooms are actually putting themselves into a specific mental state probably due to a combination of stress, trama, and/or some other mental ailment.

@@dragon1130 ^^ Would make sense too why people get lost so easily down there unable to rewire their mind-scape.

I really like the themes of consent the game explores. It's a major part of Raz's character arc, effectively communicating the relationship between therapy, privacy, and consent.

Couldn't agree more! A perfect lesson for a young character learning and exploring people's minds.

Thank you for the video, as someone who struggles with depression Psychonauts really helped me in a weird way by showing how even after suffering with depression for so long I am still redeemable and can still follow the dream I had of being a gaming streamer. Sorry to vent but up until recently family issues have caused me to fall farther into depression which (up until now) i had been handling. hopefully when I get the money ill stream Psychonauts to show my appreciation to gaming devs but also content creators like you Mister Donlon

Thank you for the heartfelt post Samuel! I can sympathize with your struggle and am glad you found an outlet and goals to chase to keep you going. Inspiring stuff my friend! As a humble teacher I can promise you that no matter how successful you become, doing what you're passionate about will always be the sweetest reward.

one more interesting comparison to Inception is the Newton's cradle. much like how in that movie the top never falls over while they're in the dream space. the Newton's cradle on Raz's desk never loses energy and keeps clacking at the same height every time since this world isn't real either.

This was the most satisfying sequel to a video game since halo 2, I played the original 15 and now I'm in my 30s and it just completely took me back to that joy of playing the first game

(ps. idea- you should try getting into the backrooms, a made by people for the people sort of thing, from seeing liminal spaces, the creatures and explaning how the backrooms can affect the mind to explorers???)

Such an interesting analysis of this level, I definitely didn't pick up on any of this the first time through. I had a blast playing through the bizarre level and now understanding it more I'm sure it'll be even better.
Also, Loboto is easily my favorite Psychonauts character so it was a great way to hook me immediately by having us start in his mind.

If i may suggest a game that expands on liminal space and has quite the exploration of games/mentality of gamers.... please play The Stanley Parable. If uou do though there is a new version (originally came out in 2014) that has new content i will suggest you avoid for a bit. And don't worry, it's labeled.
Also this series is amazing! I would love to hear you speak more on it!
