  • This video will analyze the psychological aspects of dissociative identity disorder as they appear in Agent Ford Cruller's levels in Psychonauts 2. Doublefine have crafted a character and three levels that are loaded with depth, metaphors and symbolism for understanding identity, anxiety, and consciousness. Join me as I explore it to a pretty nauseating degree!
    If you liked this analysis... get help. But maybe also consider sticking around for more deep dives. High chance I cover more of these wonderfully designed levels!

      Cassie's world most definitely, though I related to Ford Cruller. And at the same time I find Psi King's world to also be a favorite, in fact, I have multiple favorites here.
      The last world, and I won't say for spoilers sake, is the most compelling for sure; I'm all for and appreciate humanizing the antagonists, that falls within my principles.
      Sure yeah, people can do evil things but are we any better by demonizing the one who done the wrong acts by striping them of any sort of forgiveness or means to promote growth from prior mistakes they committed? Other's may be pro-retributive justice but I am pro-restorative justice.

    I think Cassiopeia's idea of archetypes can help to explain how ford's and maybe even real people's DID works, as the multiple personalities could just be archetypes with control of the main body

      hm.. unlikely. DID is stemmed through traumatic events, not intentionally splitting aspects of yourself into a faux representation of yourself. Treat an archetype like a mask instead of a separate identity.

    • @xflutters4981
      @xflutters4981 Год назад +3

      No, DID parts are much more developed and autonomous than Cassie's parts. Cassie more so represents parts like in internal family systems therapy that anyone can have. DID parts are a lot more than a caricature with one basic trait.

  • @xflutters4981
    @xflutters4981 Год назад +34

    As someone diagnosed with DID the only problem I have with this game's depiction is ford's parts are just caricatures with one trait and nothing more. DID usually involves parts that are a lot more complex and developed than that. A lot of people think DID is just, angry alter, happy alter, trauma alter, ect.
    But one alter can be all of those just like any human cuz of how much dissociated content is in them that needs to stay repressed just to function in daily life.

    • @leddy7904
      @leddy7904 10 дней назад

      I think Cassiopeia's mind fits how these things actually function as someone with it as well. Though it looks like Cassiopeia might best be described as showcasing symptoms of OSDD-1a specifically.
      For Ford's specific case, with the in game reasoning I can kind of shrug it a little, but it simply doesn't feel like a good fit for the issue comparatively, at least to myself. Though, perhaps in regards that Cassiopeia seems to be aware of her condition, and whilst Ford was aware when grounded near the Psitanium, his might've simply been how it functioned more when not diagnosed? It's hard for me to remember that timeframe specifically for us.

    I can say that DID is real. My last girlfriend had more than one person in her head. They were all her but they also weren't all her. She had pretty severe PTSD from her service in the military. She used to forget where she was and who I was sometimes. She'd wake in the middle of the night and she could only speak French or Russian. That was OK. I could deal with that. But when she would drink that's when the real monster came out. In the end, I have to cut her out of my life.

    I'm a psychologist. I have ever treated one person with DID. This was physically a young man that had experienced a lot of trauma early in life and had had a lot fear for his own physical integrity.
    To a degree this explained their fragmented sense of identity.
    Their "system" consisted of 3 "thems". The one that carried his original name and sense of identity which was somewhat distrustful and sarcastic; a young naive and trusting boy and an artistically inclined nonbinary/asexual self.
    I wanted to refer them to someone experienced in DID as I honestly communicated my inexperience on the topic but they were scared of losing their sense of "community self" (if they went to DID specialised therapist).
    I can honestly say that was my most interesting case, I learnt a lot from them. About which of them talked on what topics and dealt with what issues. About how they protected eachother from their insecurities and fears.
    About how they dealt with their trauma and the fragmented sense of self.
    Ultimately they dealt with the primary stuff that they wished to deal with in therapy and could function in a way they were happy with and we decided to stop therapy there.
    Could it be that they faked it for attention? Perhaps. Though I honestly don't entirely believe that. I believe they believe they are multiple selves, and having experienced all of them and feeling that distinction made me sense this was a real thing for them I treated it a such (not wanting to do more harm than good).
    But I can't prove it is a real thing, I wouldn't even know how to test that to a satisfactory degree.

      My MAN! The kind of comment I hoped to get! Talk about a challenging, but fascinating, and hopefully rewarding case. Knowing how well you approached this patient, above all else I hope they are in a better place with their anxiety after your care. It must have been difficult to see this person so torn apart by their traumas, and for you; I can imagine playing through Ford's levels probably brought back a lot of what these sessions were like.
      And you are living proof of why so many Psychologists hesitate to even use the label of Dissociative Identity. I must admit, I would probably have my doubts as well. But in the end, the most important thing is that regardless of whether they truly had a personality disorder, DID, or PTSD; you worked with them and I'm sure it made a positive difference in their life.

    I feel like Ford's different personalities are the result of him shattering his own mind in the Astrolathe with the fragments of Ford's mind attempting to become whole again by latching on to things around Ford to form these shallow one note personalities.

      @@misterdonlon Yeah I mean ultimately my idea is that subconsciously Ford's mental fragments are trying to become whole again by latching on to things around him creating these different identities in an attempt to stabilize Ford's mind, so Ford's different personalities aren't necessarily because of Ford's connection to the occupation the personality adopts but because otherwise there would be nothing.

    It bothered me at first when Ford says "I was young, I made a terrible mistake." Because well... he's 75 years old at the time of Psychonauts 2, and the events he's referencing took place only twenty years ago, so he was well into his fifties at the time. Not really "young" anymore to warrant that sort of reckless mistake, even if you spent a couple of decades experimenting with "pretty far-out stuff" beforehand.
    Though now... eh. Almost a little satisfying, knowing you can still make a fine mess of things, even when you should be old enough to know better. Might be a good lesson in there. You are never too old to make mistakes, nor to fix them.
