I'm curious if this is a tradition for other cultures, because my mom is full Japanese but we are raised in the US and never questioned it until now since my mom passed in September and I guess I feel a little disconnected and unsure of where our traditions came from

Hello Moe ☀️ I usually use butternut squash in soups, or in risottos. My favourite soup recipe is the following, it's quite simple : - peel the butternut squash and cut it in large chunks - Fry it in a large buttered pan with 1 sliced onion, 2-3 carrots cut in 3cm pieces and a little garlic. - When the vegetables are browned, deglaze with vegetable stock, and add coconut milk until the vegetables are soaked. - Simmer until the vegetables are tender. - Blend, and enjoy :) In France, it's very common to enjoy butternut squash at this time of the year, it's very comforting when it's cold outside 🌨️ Thank you so much for your work 💗

When the squash is cooked, I blend it & then have it with some toasted bread. It's delicious & there are tons of butternut soup recipes on the internet.

Hi Moe! Thank you for the fun video! Butternut squash is a Fall staple for a lot of people here in the US. There’s several ways it can be cooked, such as stews, soups, and even pies. But my family’s favorite way of cooking it is to cube it and then bake it in the oven with honey or maple syrup and spices. If you’re comfortable reading recipes in English you can google ‘honey roasted butternut squash’ and find recipes (you might need to convert temps to Celsius.) A note on prep: Butternut squash can be a huge pain to peel with a peeler. I cut it in two from top to bottom, remove the seeds, and then chunk it into large pieces and cut the skin off with a knife. Then cut the chunks into smaller cubes. Also, the seeds can be eaten. Let them dry, then roast them in the oven with olive oil and any spices you choose. They’re good for a snack, as well as on salads and yogurt (depending on how they’re spiced.) I hope you find this helpful. Happy New Year!🎉 (Edited for typo)

Wash the squash. You can soften the butternut squash in the microwave. This makes it easier to cut. I cut it from top to bottom in half. Remove the seeds. I put it in the oven, cut side down with a tiny bit of water and roast it in the oven at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes. You can sprinkle with cinnamon and butter and serve. OR, you can scoop the squash from the skin, puree with immersion blender to make a soup. I add some heated milk to the hot squash.
I can’t imagine living in a Japanese home. We’re very spoiled in America with big homes but it lets us have too much stuff. Good tradition to clean. Happy new year!

EDIT: I just remembered that I first discovered you, Moe-san, from Paulo's 'Day in the Life of a Japanese Mom' video! The life of a mother in Japan has always been thought of as 'the mother stays home with the kids (no job), cooks, cleans and does chores while the husband is away'. Seeing some of your more recent videos as just a mother, and not Kimono Mom, is something that's definitely reassuring.

I loved watching this. My gf and I both struggle with keeping our place clean sometimes but this made us both really want to deep clean to welcome in the new year, so we did just that first thing when we got up new years eve and it feels so good. Thanks for the awesome video and inspiration

Moe, if your sauce or miso has mold in it I'd recommend you dump the whole thing. The spores spread beyond the white spots. It's not worth getting sick over, Sutan especially. Speaking of, that mug with Sutan's want a matcha latte? phrase made me chuckle. Happy New Year and I'm sure Sutan will be even more active when she turns 4.
