First Look: 2019 Yamaha NIKEN GT

For 2019, the standard NIKEN was available in limited quantities through Yamaha's Premiere Delivery Program and sold out early. Now, Yamaha has released the GT trim level and it is being shipped to dealers right now. The GT Package is aimed to give NIKEN riders a touring-ready model with focus on comfort and capability.

The NIKEN line-up comes standard with a host of rider aids. First, Yamaha’s throttle-by-wire system allows adjustable throttle mapping with three different sensitivity modes and integrated cruise control. This throttle system also allows Yamaha to provide a type of launch assist functionality. When the rider starts to release the clutch handle, the system automatically calls for a slight amount of throttle without rider input, which is especially helpful on hill starts and low-speed maneuvers like creeping in traffic or adjusting in a parking space. Lastly, the throttle system interacts with the factory quick-shifter system. Once rolling, the rider can initiate clutch-less upshifts by simply moving the foot shifter. The engine management momentary reduces engine power for smooth shifts without disengaging the clutch. NIKEN also features a 3-level traction control system, allowing for 2 levels of sensitively and full off. Lastly, ABS is standard to control front and rear wheel lock-up for maximum stopping power and stability on all road conditions.
To provide more comfort and convenience, the GT model includes a collection of added and improved features. Up front, there is a taller, wider windscreen for better wind protection. Heated hand grips are standard with the controls integrated into the existing switch-gear and digital display. Both rider and passenger seats provide a plusher feel for improved long-ride comfort. The NIKEN GT also gives the rider and passenger each a 12-volt accessory outlet. To make storage and maintenance easier, the GT also includes a center stand.
The NIKEN GT offers additional storage with a set of Yamaha rigid soft bags. These bags can be easily removed in two ways. The bags alone can be quick-detached and carried as luggage by unlocking the interior knob and pushing the exterior latch. Or, the bags and their mounts can be removed. The mounts are removed in 2 steps by unlocking the included twist lock then pulling this pin. The saddlebags do include a set of rain covers for additional all-weather protection and a set of combination locks to secure the zipper enclosures. Lastly, the standard passenger grab rail is ready to mount one of Yamaha’s top cases.
