Worth bearing in mind as a response to this that Europe in the Middle Ages: - had no means of dating relics - believed whatever they were told by those in the clergy, upper echelons of power, superstitious and religious beliefs, etc. - were prone to doing anything for greed, money and power (just like today!) So I’d say, unless it’s been carbon dated to reveal a 1st century existence and DNA tested to reveal a Middle Eastern, Jewish heritage and any host of other scientific methods passed over it, there’s no way to tell if any of these are from the times and places ascribed to the Bible, let alone even beginning to find a way to ‘prove’ it’s the person stated. Medieval forgeries placed in churches and cathedrals put together would probably give us saints with thirty toes, seven arms, four heads and a mystical lance that warded off dragons 😂
Give it to a guard who would throw it away carelessly, until some pious faithful would take it up to a safe place. This is the History of almost every saint relic as well.
The Crusaders brought all kinds of relics back. It seems there were a great deal of them being sold all over the Middle East. I heard one estimate that there are enough pieces of the True Cross in Europe to build a church!
When i visited Marseille a few years ago we went up the hill to a huge church overlooking the harbour. While there we joined a queue thinking that it must be very interesting as there were so many people queuing. However, when we finaly reached the end we discovered in a little alcove a black toe of some 'saint' 😂 What a waste of time, no wonder we had the Reformation here in England.
Very interesting indeed! I would also bet that none of them has the real head but who knows...almost anything is possible. You are a great story teller and have the perfect captivating voice for it! So Ev, please tell what your opinion is on the matter. You obviously put in a little research in the least so I'm curious and would love to hear it!
@@zipshed I think John the Baptist was executed and considered a criminal. I would be very surprised if the head would be able to taken by anyone. I also think when people in the Middle East learned what Christians would do and pay for relics they provided them in spades.
So - no one knows anything about this claimed relic during the first1,200 years or so after John was martyred? In vew if the lack of any provenance, this thing is just a morbid curiosity.
Magnificent question! One of the places that says they have a head is the Great Mosque of Damascus which was built in the 700s. They say that the mosque was built on the site of a previous site of a Christian Basilica that was dedicated to John they Baptist. They say when they built it they found the head. Soooooo…..there’s that part. The Historian Josephus wrote he was buried in what would be modern day Jordan. From the 4th century it was traditionally believed he was buried at Sebastia (modern day West Bank). Then the theories pile on …..hence 4 heads.
I love biblical archeology, and I think it would be SO COOL if we could ever actually find some of these bodies (body parts 🥴) of some of the people in the Bible.
@EvelynEdwards likely because ultimately they know a lot their "artifacts"(if not all) are fake. 😫 I don't really trust what the Catholic Church calls "artifacts," but if they are found straight from the ground using modern technology and techniques, I'm excited for it! The problem is that most of the ancient Christian/Jewish sites are under whole modern cities! Boo! 😪 But maybe someday, the Catholic Church will allow testing 😉😁
@@paulcoverdale8312 on? The four heads are where I mention in the video. One in the Great Mosque in Damascas, one in Rome Italy, and one in Munich Germany. The head I am showing is in Amiens, France.
@ Yes, but I have seen poor misguided folks actually kneel down and pray to them. Of course the church maintains the position "We don't pray to Mary and the saints , we only honor them." But as a former catholic (Now Methodist), I have seen what looks like worship.
Even though John the Baptist was a brother in Christ hope that he is resting in peace Can't wait to see him again, but all they have to do is do some DNA evidence to see if this is his actual head or not.

Doesn't the modern Catholic Church condemn the keeping of relics as paganism?
Very much no. Anglican Church yes. However with the Anglican Church it has nothing to do with paganism, it has to do with idolatry.
