- so this has been a process that has been going on for about 4 months now. I was waiting till this day to show you guys what we did. I could not be more proud of my entire team for working so hard. This was a day I won't ever forget.

I really ♡♡♡ that Western Star with Allisson automatic transmission. I think Allisson is the best automatic transmission made in North America, It's better than Eaton Fuller Ultra Shift. You made the right decision.

Last year we bought a Kenworth t470 hooklift truck with an automatic. We would have preferred a manual transmission but the truck was for sale at the right price. After using an automatic 5 days a week you really are glad you have it. The hooklift is the best thing ever. Drop a bin where you need one and the truck can keep working somewhere else. Were in Southern Ontario and it's hard to find truck drivers here too so that's why we went with the hooklift. The truck only needs one driver and can be used at multiple job sites.

What a difference in equipment, looking at your picture from 1990 to today's truck. I worked for Twin then installing hydraulics, Turner air lifts and the dump boxes. I know exactly what the 1990 truck had compared to today. Mind blowing!
Love the 4700 with a Allison. I'm a salesman out here on the west coast for Western Star. I've owned Western Star trucks myself. Great choice.

Not a lot of local truck drivers miss shifting gears around here (Quebec). It is also extremely difficult to find talented drivers so the more comfort and productivity we can gain the best interest it is for everyone.
Another con would be the added weight versus a manual transmission but again, compared to the gains of the driver being less fatigued and probably less grumpy by the end of the week this is not even a comparison to make anymore.
Super truck by the way, hope your driver will take good care of it.
As someone who formerly drove OTR trucks and now an Environmental, Health and Safety administrator/instructor, I have to say you made the right decision for what you’re doing with it. As you had stated,, the workload on the driver is much less which allows them to focus more so on the actual driving portion of their trip. I would also add that it reduces fatigue, especially when operating the vehicle within the city or on congested highways/interstates in major cities. If you had been performing heavy haul jobs I would have to say the standard would probably serve you better having access to the Lo-Lo gear and the 18 speed Allison manual trans. Again, great choice!!!

all depends on what your using it for, if you get auto or manual, a lot of stop and go auto is best , cross country i would go manual . still its your company get what fits your company best . Congrats KWC Team

Congrats KWC Team. Sweet looking Western Star 4700SB. Automatics have came along way from were they used to be. It's kind of reverse of what it used to be. Seen more manuals back in the day, now you are seeing more Automatics instead of manuals.

Very nice. Even with the shortage of drivers I would be very careful as to who I let drive my truck. Just because someone can operate an automatic does not mean they can drive a truck. I know you can say the same about a stick shift but the influx of automatic transmissions has meant a lot of companies just throw a warm body behind the wheel and hope for the best. Good luck.

I think you did good on the auto trans!Like you said, it’s one less thing to think about while driving. We’re not out here to have fun and brag about shifting anyways. We’re out here to deliver a load. As long as that’s gets done, your good 👍
I drove 13s and 18s most of my career but recently I started driving a 6 axle Peterbilt with an Allison automatic and I like it. I haul mostly asphalt and occasionally sand/stone. The automatic is great when you're milling asphalt. Now if I was a single truck operation, Id buy the 18 speed, but if you plan of having different people in the truck, an auto is the way to go.
We have a 2017 4700 Western Star Boom Truck with an Alison Automatic in it I thought I would hate driving it but I love it. My left knee thanks me every time I drive it.

i work for a top 10 LTL carrier who runs all 50 states and canada with 4000 trucks.We have 80% automated manuals now and everyone who talked bad about them years ago has one now and loves it.The mileage is very close to manuals and pretty much no maintenance problems with the transmissions of either.We run kenworth,freightliner,and mack.I still run a manual in city pickup and delivery and can't wait to get an automatic but atlas with a older manual i dont have to worry about getting slip seated.We had automatics in the military 20 years ago so they are proven workhorses.

It's your dump truck you get it the you want it.
I think automatic transmissions really have their place on highway trucks, like you said theres less to worry about and the big factor is you can throw anyone in the truck and not worry about grinding gears etc. However, I think if you're running mountainous terrain like where I'm at you really need the manual to have complete control as the automatics shift around to much and end up having to regain power a lot of the time where as the manual can just lock it in and hold it there. Also I have found that the autos will not take you the places a manual can as they will only power down for so long. Had a truck bring lime out and he couldn't go where a manual truck could go, truck didn't spin or anything, it just quit.
@@Danny-Patts Yes that's how my pickup is but it still doesn't give you full control like a manual where sometimes you need it
Oh my! What a beautiful addition to the already flawless fleet! Congrats on the new addition man just proves the hard work you and your guys do is paying off. Automatics are awesome if you have to truck a lot man, sure you can't be gear specific if you need it but so much less stress plus this industry is always adapting to new things and industry standards. Its great to be able to drive manual but auto is the way of the future. Congrats KWC team!

I drive a 2020 Mack Granite with the Allison, and im really happy with it. Also i dont pay for them, so it doesnt really matter to me what the trucks have lol. Nice Western Star, very good trucks!!

Congrats KWC team! I have an Allison transmission in my 2019 Chevy 6500hd dump truck, an Allison transmission is bullet proof!
Do you know what series in that truck? I was interested in new 6500 and was wondering allison options for it. Im sure some 2000 series but I wasn't sure if they had a 3000 series
