- Schengen 2024 updates for Bulgaria are effective in March, and Social Security and Pensioner Retiree Residency is still an option in this affordable country. If you wish to live in Bulgaria we provide the current opportunities in today's video for residency.
We slow travel the world, often called roaming retirement or roving retirement. We retired early and use Montenegro as our non-Schengen home base. Montenegro is an attractive and affordable alternative to the high prices in the US. If you own a home in Montenegro life can be very comfortable for the average American. Do you want to live abroad as an Expat or Nomad? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it's like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option. We visited with our attorney in Veliko Tarnovo Bulgaria to discover if this Balkan country is an option for you, so if you're a digital nomad, a retiree or thinking of retiring abroad we did this video with you in mind.

Do you want to live abroad as an Expat? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it's like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option.
We began our retirement in March of 2020 with the intent to travel the world, spending 1-3 months in a country or location. We want to see what it's like to live there and not simply visit, and we want to share these experiences and the costs with whoever wishes to follow along.
The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,800 a month, and a couple on Social Security averages over $2,800 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a great standard of living in many countries such as Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Italy, Philippines, Thailand, Ecuador, and many others when compared to the living costs in the US. If you dreamed of traveling as a nomad in retirement this video is for you.

Thanks guys for a great informative video
Our pleasure!
But the $64,000 question is still "Does everyone have to fly back to Washington DC and rent a hotel room for six weeks while they apply to the Bulgarian embassy there?"
Until that bureaucrat nonsense has been changed, Bulgaria doesn't want Americans no matter what nice language is otherwise used
It's important to know that the slightest requirement, however innocently added to an immigration policy, can be the poison pill that causes an IT nomad to take his Euros elsewhere. Germany requiring a simple health insurance policy? Ended up being €600 per month with the insurance companies setting up whole departments to tattle on those who don't pay up. Norway wants a simple document showing you were never in jail? The FBI now won't give you that document without having you fingerprinted overseas and Fedex and post escadrille and then they check you against all unsolved murders and, three months later you might get that simple document.
No, the bottom line is an American friendly country will make tourist visas one year long like Georgia and Albania, or make things very very easy without "good ideas" and "nice to haves" added.
Unfortunately the visa D process is what it is ☹️
I hear your frustation! Unfortunately, that trip to the USA embassy is required for many countries. A friend of mine just retired to Mexico and she had to jump through HOOPS to get there, but once most of the hard stuff was done, she's on a fast track to a dual citizenship.
"The application for issuing a long-stay visa is submitted only in the diplomatic and consular missions at the permanent place of residence of the applicant or the missions accredited in
the state of the applicant’s permanent residence. Persons staying legally in a third country, different from the country of their permanent
residence, may, as an exception, apply in this third country after explaining the reasons thereof and if their return to the state of permanent residence is guaranteed"
(Source: www.bulgaria-embassy.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/VISA-TYPE-D-VISA.pdf)
Apparently, it only has to be your permanent residence, if your have PR or can get PR where you are at then you can do it from there and not have to go to D.C.
That is so true! Before I saw Dimitar on your last video, I talked to 2-3 different attorneys who basically told me to "take a hike". Dimitar is the best. Thanks for the introduction guys.
Did they think it is not possible? Not worth their trouble for what you would pay them? Or something else?
You are very welcome 🤗
Very interesting - an option I hadn't considered.
Thanks for watching.
Really useful - Dimiter looks like an extremely useful contact. 10% tax sounds very appealing.
He has been stellar for us. Thanks for watching us 😊
Nice vid as usual 👌
Thank you again
Yesss!!
Glad you like it 😁
Unrelated, but how are your viewers / clients / friends in Ecuador doing? Everyone please stay safe.
Sorry for the delay, everyone there is safe and doing well as far as we are aware. Thanks for asking ❤️
Watching from Ecuador trying to figure out what to do.
Welcome to Bulgaria!
😃
Nice country. I was served by The Kickstart Company.
I am not sure what the Kicksart Company is, but hopefully that is a good thing. Thanks for watching.
Great informative video as always, so the lawyer can provide the required two-year active company which will sponsor the representative, isn't it?
I do not believe this is the case. Email me and I can forward you to Dimitar warrenjulietravel@gmail.com
Still have Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia (Ohrid is wonderful), Ukraine (spent 2 months this year), Turkey, and Georgia.
There is also Serbia and Bosnia as options.
Hi W&J love your videos! For pensioner visa how much has to be deposited into Bulgarian bank account monthly? Also can you provide additional information on physical presence requirements?
Please send us an email
Warrenjulietravel@gmail.com so we can forward it to the expert who can answer properly. Thanks for watching:)
Interesting video, thanks for sharing with us.
I wonder why you don't take same option and be in the EU as you wish not having to spend 180 days a year outside?
We are traveling and have not decided to do residency at this time. We are leaning towards Montenegro for our residency at some point right now.
I see no reason to apply for a BULGARIAN resident permit that taxes American pensioners 10%, when France doesn't tax your Social Security or IRA or Pension at all. France offers low or no cost health insurance to retirees who are low income. France is also is a country with higher life expectancy.
We really can’t speak to what France offers other than what we read online as we have not spoken with a residency expert on the country.
Dimitar said pensions are not taxed at all. 10% is the income tax for workers.
France has low cost medical for French citizens, not for all people who decide to go there and use the French Social system
You are totally correct.
@@WarrenJulieTravelyou should visit France. It's a lovely country.
Very informative, So I think even though Bulgaria will be a part of those 29 countries in March , you'll still be able to maintain your business and keep driving around in Abby...🤔
Yes, we should have no issues with this. 😃
Great video! So with the new Schengen updates, will Social Security and Pensioner Retirees be able to stay in the country more than 90 days? Thanks
Yes if you apply for and obtain residency.
A quick question if I may, my wife and I are retired in the UK with a pension paid in UK bank. We have a bulgarian company already and have land/house in Bulgaria for 13 years, and a bulgarian bank account. We wish to come over as and when we can without the 90/180 days restriction, but we will not be residents all year may be no more than 6 months.
I think we are missing the question. Are you asking how many months it is obligatory to stay in Bulgaria to retain residency?
Hia, one of my friends wants to know if they can get their D Visa for residency by having a UK private pension ( not the state government pension)?
Yes if he has a retirement pension he should qualify, private should not matter.
Please make a video about USA rules that SSA will be agreed to pay when you live in other countries
What payments are 100% safe and what you maybe lost (SSI) or state payments
Very interesting for lots of expats
Well, we believe this would be a great video, it would concern us to put out information like this, without a very credible expert.
@@WarrenJulieTravelplease make a video about ssa payment . How can we get pension money in Bulgaria from USA. Very important for many Americans pensioners. Tanks. 😢
Hello Warren and Julie love your show we would like to move to Bulgaria two within three years
From Holland and enjoy our pension but please could you tell me what is a dissertation certificate kind regards Harry and Yvonne
Please send us an email at warrenjulietravel@gmail.com so we can forward your information to our residency attorney. I am not sure I understand, but I will try to get the proper answers. Thanks for watching:)
Maybe I missed it, but how about having a notarized long-term property lease as one of the retirements for a retiree visa for US citizens. Thank you!
I’m not sure about that. We can put you in touch with the attorney to get answers if you wish. Just email us at warrenjulietravel@gmail.com
I believe that it is still a must. It is either a notaried yearly property lease or proof of purchased real estate.
Question: If one enters Bulgaria now, will the Bulgarian border guards not let you in if you just spent 90 days in Greece? Or for January and February, are they still going by the rule of 90 days in 180 spent in Bulgaria only?
You are good until March. Anything after February will count towards your 90 days.
@@WarrenJulieTravel So if I spent the last three months in Greece, I can spend the next month and a half in Bulgaria but I'll have to leave before March 1st because I will automatically be that month and a half overstayed, right?
All the Greece time from the past 180 days (90) would suddenly add to the 45 days
Are there income minimums for retired pensioners? Other countries like Italy and Spain have what I consider high income requirements for a couple. What if a retired person wants to own a car in Bulgaria? Or buy a house? Thanks
It is very low, I think approximately $600 USD a month. The minimum wage equivalent.
Your retirement payments need to be more that Bulgarian
What is now around $300 a months
But before visa D in Bulgarian bank account need to be 6 months *$300=$1800 minimum
You buy a house or apartments,
but land or car only for LLC owners
Means you need open a company and your company buying
Not difficult
We are early retirees but have the means to pay monthly transactions into a Bulgarian bank. Would this qualify for a Dtype visa?
As a middle aged couple with a young child, we would love to move there, but it sounds like the only visa available would be freelance as she works remote for a company here in the uk, contract ongoing Very sad as I’m an organic farmer and would love to get over there.
Please feel free to email us at warrenjulietravel@gmail
We can connect you with the attorney so he can provide you with the options available.
So US 401k retirement income does not count for residency income visa requirements?
Please work with our attorney, Dimitar. He may have additional options. Best of luck.
Do people work with Demeter directly even if they are going to Sofia or Plovdiv, or only in Veliko Tarnovo?
You can be in any location.

I'm having bulgarian eu blue card.. can i travel to schengen countries from April, 2024 by air or sea directly without the need to apply visa separately?
Potentially, but we suggest contacting Dimitar directly.
Yes, for 90 days.
I read you need proof of self sufficiency. If my income comes from real estate, how much do I need?
Please send us an email at warrenjulietravel@gmail.com so we can send your questions to the residency expert.
Yeah, I really hate the Schengen rules as a nomad and how more and more of Europe is being added to the Schengen area.
It is extremely frustrating, but we are very fortunate to have the countries we currently do . Losing Romania and Bulgaria was definitely a huge loss.
So true! It's being done to Block Russia.
What is the amount of monthly income you will need to survive in Bulgaria let's say in the Varna area? Does you lawyer work in all of Bulgaria? I am a VA disabled Vet that was looking to move to Bulgaria.
This is a very subjective question depending on your lifestyle. Please feel free to email us at warrenjulietravel@gmail.com for further discussion.
Wow
😊
Is it possible to get residency or a S visa before retirement?
What country are you from? Send me an email and I’ll forward you to Dimitar. Warrenjulietravel@gmail.com
Get ready for a long wait and endless bureaucracy and of course an expensive lawyer and money for the bakshish. But the lawyer and bakshish is what works…
Have my visa D in January 2024
And waiting to restore my new for me house in Black Sea
How exciting for you. If you are interested in speaking about the process, let us know. It would be an informative video for other people. Please contact us at warrenjulietravel@gmail.com if you wish to share the story.

These visas between Bulgaria and the U.S. are total nonsense. Hopefully, the visas will be soon in the past. The American embassy in Sofia is working towards it.
These pension things are unfortunate. You can be not retired with a pension, but retired and able to support yourself through provable sources that would far exceed a "pension", but that does not count. Very unfortunate.
Yes, unfortunately you are spot on. It’s definitely easy if you’re on a pension though.
@@WarrenJulieTravel yes. There are obviously other ways but it's a glaring problem in so many countries visa programs for "retired" folks. We are "retired" in all sense of the term... but no pension. There are always other options sometimes that can work.
@@JayandSarah yes, this is our world as well.
A bit confused. A US Citizen on Social Security. If Bulgaria enters the EU, will this stop non-EU citizens from getting long term (over 90-days) Residency Visa stay in the country?
@@stevenjb.9275 they are still independent countries, no different than say Portugal being in the EU. You could only stay in other EU countries 60 of any 180 days in that case I would say. A bit hard for them to track if you were violating that but I believe this is correct.
I am a retired doctor from Pakistan My pension is euro 500 only and I can perform light jobs easily preferably as a medical assistant How to start I am 65 years old
Also my cousin 43years a cook also wanted to move to Bulgaria. We are from Pakistan

Sir, With due respect, stereotyping and making unproven generalisation about Nigerians for fraudulent stuff is unacceptable. I take exception to that comment. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly exist in every society even in your own country of origin, so stop singling out Nigerians. Thank you
Our apologies.
Pease understand it is not all Nigerians, but a huge amount of scams coming from a few people. This link speaks to this topic from a Nigerian viewpoint. www.quora.com/What-is-the-reason-for-the-high-number-of-email-scams-originating-from-Nigeria-and-Ghana

Language test for a Bulgarian freelancer visa? Did they vote in a nationalist government?
A lot of countries are now requiring this.
I lost $2700 with this attorney. Becouse of your videos.
Please explain?
I have sent him all the papers that I have for my business overseas. And I have asked him if my papers OK and that's all he needs. He told me they look OK and he needs to translate them for $1500. I have sent him the money. Then he called me to tell me that every thing looks good and I need now to send him $1200 for submitting the papers. Up to now things looks good. After he got the money he asked for more things that I didn't have! He should have told me that before sending the last payment. Especially after he translated all the documents.
