The Berkshire: Story of a Golf Club

In Episode 5 of our ‘Story of a Golf Club’ series, we return to the famous Surrey-Berkshire sand-belt to visit the Red and the Blue courses at The Berkshire.
The Berkshire is nestled in a formidable golfing landscape which includes Sunningdale, Wentworth, and Swinley Forest. The heathland here was once a dense forest which played host to Royal hunting trips in the 18th century, and it provided the ideal golfing turf after much of the woodland was cleared in 1916: fast draining and springy soil; natural undulations to encourage shotmaking; and swathes of purple heather to punish wayward shots. For those who did not have the time to venture to the coastal links, clubs such as The Berkshire provided a fantastic (arguably superior) alternative in the early 20th century…
Herbert Fowler was commissioned to design both courses here, after winning huge plaudits for his work at Walton Heath. The Red breaks all the rules of course architecture, featuring 6 par threes, 6 par fours, and 6 par fives. By contrast, the Blue occupies much of the lower ground of the estate and feels more secluded and intricate. It is often regarded as the tougher of the two courses.
Whether you are approaching one of the stunning green complexes framed by purple heather, or playing one of its world-beating par 3s, or even enjoying its famous buffet lunch, The Berkshire is not only immaculately presented, but simply a playground of tremendous fun.
