I just started working for Hyundai a few months ago. I came from Volkswagen after being with them for a little over a year. Both great cars and both very fun to drive! Honestly if you want to make a Smart decision, Hyundai is the way to go. The price is right and you get the best warranty in the business! Volkswagens have depreciated so much since the diesel issues. You can buy a GTI for $29,000-$36000; but it drops $15,000 once you drive away and you are backed with half the warranty as a Hyundai. You also get way more options in a Elantra Sport for a cheaper price!
This car has astounded me... I own a 2017 SE and I wish I would've waited. BUT It is a great car and I think HONDA and TOYOTA should be getting scared, because HYUNDAI is not going to slow down, in fact, they will be at the top soon. Can't wait for N performance from Hyundai, that will be the true test!
This Elantra Sport of course! The GTI may drive better but will require more repairs in the long run. Based on the latest surveys and my personal experience with my current 2010 Elantra,Hyundai is tops in reliability!
To me the real test is around100K. That's when a lot of things typically can go wrong other than the regular wear and tear items. I don't know why Matt Doyle specifically said 50K. I didn't even mention the current mileage on my Hyundai. It's 86.6K so I'll find out soon enough!

Some manufacturers can consistently produce vehicles with 130k to 180k miles with nothing but maintenance items, run to about 240k with no expensive failures, and pretty much no drive train issues up to 400k.
I've literally just now gotten one from carvana and I'm so excited to get it. Literally everybody I've been watching has high mentions of this car. I don't think I've been looking forward a car as much as I am now!! :)
I am here because I rented an Enterprise Elantra 1.4 turbo since my 2013 Accord LX is still in the body shop. I was so surprised how torque this Hyundai 1.4 turbo is. I'm just so satisfied with its power and DCT. Thank you Hyundai and great job on these turbo engines, you made me a believer.
I would take the hyundai Elentra for two reasons: 1) it is has the best value-to-performance ratio. 2) the easiest to repair and that 10 years warranty is tough to beat.
Hyundai/Kia are really stepping up their game in this class of vehicle. You cannot beat the workmanship and warranty. I own (3rd) a Kia Forte 5 SX Turbo manual and am excited to see this car. My only 2 complaints on my current car is yes that rear twist beam axle is not the best for handling and the manual transmission in my car is set for a economy car standards. This meaning the gears are way too short for a turbo car making you row fast through the gears. If a taller, especially 5th-6th gear was more for highway, would have been a ton better. Not sure if this Elantra has this same transmission. If they make a hatch version of this car, It will be hard not to trade mine in.
That Kia Forte 5 is nice looking. It caught my eye. This car is more refined across the board. But, I agree, the Koreans are moving much faster in the right direction than the competitors
This is a good looking car. I've been eyeing this model since I heard of the release of the sport. When it hits dealerships I may have to test drive one.
I'd choose this over a GTI strictly on price and reliability. VW has a bad record in reliability with that 2.0t, water pumps and so on... This comes with a 10yr 100k warranty and some sweet looks. My heart really wants a GTI but my wallet is very scared.
I’ve owned 3 Hyundai’s and 3 VW’s and they have all been very reliable. Currently on my 3rd Hyundai, a 2017 Elantra Sport with the manual. It’s a very fun car and I can pass someone like they are standing still, yet I can still get 40mpg on my way to work every day.
I bought the DCT Tech. Amazing. Can't say enough about the power and handling. The seem perfectly tuned for the car right off the lot. Not to mention the sound system. Excellent for what it is. I'll tune her down the road... but for now she's tons of fun stock. I highly recommend it. 👍🏻🥓
I've watched several outstanding reviews of this car and this one is a standout, especially the final few minutes explaining the value of this offering. All of the good ones highlight the improved independent rear suspension and driving dynamics. But no one yet has mentioned the name Albert Biermann. His influence upon this company, and especially this vehicle, is now felt and it has to be causing concern among Hyundai/Kia's competitors. Hyundai/Kia has now addressed its biggest critics who have been right to criticize their suspensions and steering and it's hard to imagine just how good this company will get as Biermann gets his hands on other products. I would buy this car without hesitation as I've owned previous Hyundai products and the value proposition was irresistible. This Elantra is a whole different animal when it comes to value because of the engineering behind it. And I bet that most will never know that the former head of BMW's M division engineered the ride and will miss owning a truly great C-segment sleeper.
i test drove the civic si (2015) and the vw gti (2015) back to back. the gear box in the civic was a complete dream come true, and the engine had an amazing sound to it. rowing through the gears was magical. but it was annoying loud inside on the highway and the short gears translated to the engine whining at 3000 rpm. the gti surprised me quite a lot. the amount of low end torque pulling you was subliminal and surpassed the si. the interior was so much more quiet that a deff person would be able tell the difference. the gti felt more alive than the si. the si gear box in the gti would be a match made in heaven. this kind of makes me want to try out this new elantra sport.
I eventually went with this Elantra Sport. I was on the fence for a while with the WRX & GLI tho. But at the end of things, it was hard for me to ignore the Elantra Sport price tag. Got mines fully loaded for only 20k.
Took an extended overnight test drive of one of these and I have to say Motoman is correct: it is middle of the pack. It is a compelling vehicle at its price range. It is no focus st, gti, etc., but it better than you would expect.
I love mine. 6MT and it looks great! Something most people don’t think about is the fact that I see GTI, GLI, SI, literally everywhere. Its been 4 years since I got mine and people still gawk at it.
I'd choose a GTI. Why - I own a MK6 GTI and absolutely love it. What do i love - the refinement, the driving versatility (good drivers car, and amazing commuter car at the same time), doesn't tire me out, but keeps me happy in the twisties
Focus ST. Just bought it in October coming from a 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo I leased for 4 years. The ST IMO is the best *overall* in the segment you mentioned. Hatchback automatically makes it more practical/more storage. All of them except the GTI and ST are too slow for me, plus the GTI and ST have the best modding/tuning potential. I personally am not a VW fan and think the GTI is a bit too pricey, and possibly "too" refined for what hot hatches are supposed to be. The Elantra, especially with the rear multi-link suspension is probably what the Veloster Turbo should've been. They really should base it on the Elantra platform more than the Accent. If they get a 2.0L turbo in the VT and rear multi-link suspension and get things set up correctly, they could actually compete with the big boys in the segment. The Elantra Sport is definitely a good step there. I would be super excited if Hyundai stepped up and released some kind of AWD hatchback with 300-350hp (RM16???).
I was about to take the Emission Modification option from VW, then, I received an email from Hyundai introducing the Elantra Sport; which led to this video review. Afterwards, I contacted VW to change my selection to the Buyback option and wait for this car; with the 6-speed manual. I looked at a lot, I mean a LOT of suitable replacements for the Jetta TDI, and I wasn't sold on any. I chose this car over the competition because, of past - positive experience with the brand; the value; the content, and the reported performance. Factor in the excellent warranty, availability of dealerships; this is definitely a win win for me.
2 years later, and I'm still enjoying this car. It's an exact copy of the one in the video. I'm happy that this was the design, and not that of the '19 version; a design tragedy!
If money wasn’t an option I would pick the GTI for sure. However, if you sprinkle some reality into the equation, this car has to be the obvious choice. $23k for a well sorted, 200hp car seems like an amazing deal. And if, like me, you would want some extra power to compete with something like the GTI then 3k worth of upgrades with certainly get you there and still be cheaper than the VW.
Wow, I had no idea Larry the Cable Guy reviewed cars, and so competently. Jokes aside, many years ago I owned Kia Sephia LX with a stick, and it drove very well, and was surprisingly good in corners once you changed the tires from the OEM garbage to something decent. I am looking forward to a Kia based on this Hyundai Elantra Sport.
Your underestimating the Elantra SE. I drive a road that has 2 very tight s curves in a row. There is a big sign with flashing lights saying 55 mph ahead. I drive thru them in the SE at 85 mph , no problem, it's a better handler than you think! Just turned 30.000 miles o problems, very happy with it.
I wouldn't really compare this to the GTi. The Jetta GLi is a better example I feel, though you're talking about a $5k price difference right off the bat.
I'm a GTI guy so if money was no concern, GTI or R all day. However, I have a 14' Elantra Sport lease coming due next year so this new Sport is almost a sure thing now!
I'd choose the GTI despite the price increase. I own an '08 GLI and people still ask if it is a new car, which speaks to the refinement and the build quality of the car. The GTI is more sporty as well as more refined to drive, not to mention it has 40+ years of pedigree standing behind it. Still, good effort on Hyundai for this Elantra, its a very respectable car.
I leased a 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport w/ premium package (silver) for $250 a month w/ 0 down and after all taxes and fees. I really like it and it's not very noisy when the radio is on. I LOVE HYUNDAI BLUE LINK let's me remote start the car from the app (premium package only). I do regret not getting blue or dark gray. its very sporty and fun to drive but it's not a fast turbo 4 like a 328i
If you share the details of your lease, it would help us see how good a deal it was. Did you get $250/mo on a 36/10k, 36/12k longer? More miles? etc... just nitpicking. Thanks for sharing this!!!
I love the Elantras! We leased a 2013 GLS for three years for my daughter for college. We just got her a 2017 Elantra Limited to start her job. Love the car. I have never watched your channel before. I was interested in the new Elantra Sport. What a nice surprise to see Nathan! Nathan is correct on the road noise. That is my only concern, which could be solved with some sound deadening. I will let them know in Alabama. Love your channel. I will subscribe. Thanks.
GTI. A used one. I hear nothing but fantastic things about the GTI and I love the character that it has in the interior with the plaid seats. Any of these choices would be better than the 2009 Chrysler Sebring I own.
I’ll take the Hyundai. I currently own a 2015 Limited Elantra and have been very happy with it. I also sold cars for just about 25 years. Mostly luxury cars until Obama and Bush ruined the Economy. Then I noticed Hyundai was selling the new Sonata like crazy, and they looked HOT!!! I moved from luxury sales to Hyundai for the last 5 years of my car sales career. I was very impressed with the brand and how happy the customers were. That’s part of the reason I/we became owners. The car is my wife’s daily driver but I drive it too. Love it. Wish the new turbo could get the great mileage hers gets. It sometimes can get over 40 MPH on the highway.
hyundai knocked it out of the park with this elantra sport. This is hands down one of the sleekest sedans out there thats not gonna break the bank. With good reliability and warranty. Not a bad choice
Wow, thanks so much man! You've really helped me. Some background: Very good chance of getting my first job out of grad school, moving to U.S. from Canada. Can't bring leased car down, makes no sense to finance the lease. Sooooo, I get to car shop again :D. It came down to Civic EX-T or Sport for me; I'm not fond of Honda tbh, don't trust the CVT on it either (I won't be the only one driving, I know), but the dealer has life+infinite mile power train and engine warranty. But...the Sport is just everything I want, just wanted to see what the better more objective RUclips reviewers (you are, honestly, so many ppl give Hyundai crap for nothing) had to say. Looks like my favor to the Sport just got bigger :). I just hope they make a version package with LKAS and pre collision braking since they lower premiums quite a bit (Honda Sensing does the same). Edit: Commented before the video finished :P. It's just price for me in the end and reliability. The EX-T seems to have some hesitation issues and high speeds. Also, I don't think the sport's DCT is the same as the Tuscon's is it? That issue did get resolved it seems. My limit is 25-26k MSRP (my job will get me good discounts, so my MSRP limit allows my sale price to be around the 23 mark), so that's roughly in the 380-420 a month limit. I have until probably January-February though, so I hope by then Hyundai puts in the tech package that gives SCC, PCB, LKSA, etc that'll lower insurance. Not sure why Hyundai gives you only some of those for other packages, just be simple like Honda: Sensing package for $1000, or not.
@MotoManTV Which car? Elantra Sport for sure! Bought one 2 weeks ago, love everything about it! This review is one of reasons I decided on the Elantra Sport (the car I traded in was a 2013 base model Elantra GS Coupe) Why? Sporty yet comfortable ride (not harsh), excellent motor and suspension, lots of standard features and very fun to drive. Can't get a better value for your money, and dont forget none of those other cars can even come close to matching the warranty offered by Hyundai! For the record, I bought 2018 blue Elantra Sport with the 7sp DCT transmission, and the premium package. (At my age, I like letting the car do the shifting, though sometimes I do shift into the "manual" mode and have fun with making use of the paddle shifters! And that's not even mentioning the car is quicker AND has better fuel economy with the 7sp DCT!)
I'd still pick the GTI with the adjustable dampers and driver assistance package etc. It still seems the best pick in the segment for performance and comfort balance. Also the hatch makes it several times more practical.
I agree with you that the GTI with the adjustable suspension would be more sporting. But for $10-12,000 more than the Elantra Sport, it absolutely should be! A well equipped mid level GTI (se model) stickers for around $33,000!
Hyundai been stepping up it's game. For sure would choose this one over VW, Honda... Why, Features, Performance, reliability and Price... No brainer...
Most reviewers compare this car with the GTI but as someone who actually needs it as a daily driver it is more comparable to the GLI. both sedans. relatively close HP and torque......and then like you said the price diference comes in and I would most likely chose this Elantra. The dash layout in the elantra is one of the nicest in my opinion. I would rate reliability about the same on both...... I don;t know much about Hyundai but i've own 3 VW.
man guys great video love the fast lane car as well... man tough choice .. i test drove the. gti in Jan of this year and before I got behind the whell it was just the car salesman i already wanted it....its a bad ass car, but there is that vw issues that wprry me about owning one . so Idk i would have to say for the thrill of the drive gti autobahn all the way with performance package. but I could also take a mazda 3 had that before loveeeeeeed that car. not one issue. or the elantra. which is basically the cars in looking at to get next year. one of the 3 . as far as road noise cant u just change the tires...? pirrelles p7 would help! there stock tires aren't that great. had to change mine out on my 2014 turbo limited sonata. its much quieter. :)✌🙌👍
Hi Motoman I'm waiting for the new Civic SI which would be my first choice. I favour reliability first and fun-factor second. I have owned 2 Hondas and they have both been the most reliable and fun cars I have owned. My 1998 civic 4 door 5 spd manual was a mini BMW in terms of looks and driving pleasure and my 2013 Accord Sport 6 spd manual is a well built and fun sedan as well. My only complaint with where I live (Ontario, Canada) is that I have to run on snow tires for 6 months of the year dulling my driving enjoyment. Nice to see Nathan on this video (he's a teddy bear). Keep up the good work!!
I have to downsize to free up space in my monthly budget and I am very much considering this. I was originally considering the Fiesta ST but I think there is even more for your money here than that offered. I'm also waiting to see the Civic Si when it comes out. If I don't like what I see then I'm definitely getting this.
if I were to drop anywhere close to 30k on my next car I would probably wait for N brand Hyundai is expected to bring out next year instead of getting GTI or I would just go for this one over anything else at this price point
I own a 2013 Elantra GT (1.8l, 6 speed manual) And I'm excited to see if a: the new i30 will become the next GT, and b: the Elantra Sport upgrades will be applied as standard or an option.
At this moment, I would choose GTI because VW is currently giving very good discount due to their trouble. But if not considering any discounts or rebates, Elantra sport can be a great choice....
I am thinking about selling my MB E320 and honda crv ex-L this year and was thinking about replacing them with a 2017 crv touring and a GTI se or mazda mx-5 RF. I was shocked that the GTI se and the MX5 RF stickers for around $33,000 US. I am willing to pay $32-34,000 for a new crv touring as it's loaded and holds its value well, but I have doubts about paying $33,000 for a midlevel GTI. After some thought and research I am now leaning towards a crv touring and a Elantra sport. Every review of the new Elantra sport has been great and I plan on test driving one. I can't wait to see what the Hyundai engineers at Namyang (N-division) have to offer us gear heads in the future.
The insurance on my GTI is way more expensive than it should be, I'm betting this would be much less expensive in that department as well... With that said my GTI is hands down the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of any car I've owned... That German feel is something I don't think the Asian car companies will ever be able to duplicate...
There's a dealership in Maryland offering these (and the Limited, too) for 17-20k. Never been more tempted- I've been looking for something fun that isn't in the dark ages of tech.
I've just driven a 2016 GTI 3 saturdays ago and loved it, what I wanted was 31k and was above my budget. I loved the seating position the only car that came close to my Genesis that I'll need to replace since kids are in my future. The way it drove, the feel of the materials that being said there was no other car that appealed to me. Tried a Cruze wasn't a fan of the looks didn't even bother test driving it, dislike the way the civic looks, and same goes for the focus st. My wife drives a 2015 Corolla S and it's fine as a a-b car but I can't see myself being that bored behind the wheel. This could be the answer for me. I would pick the Hyundai on price alone. 5-6k dollar difference is a big chunk of change, and with the 10year 100k and the reliability of Hyundai I would put my money on the Hyundai once again.
I'm really interested in the sport but I really don't want to buy anything till i see what Hyundai's N division comes out with. A more aggressive elantra would be perfect
Having owned a focus titanium (admittedly not an st), an elantra gt hatch, and currently a gti, despite the price diff, i would still pick the gti. Its crash tests results in the real world are stellar, it gets the epa advertised fuel economy plus and it is VERY well put together with quality materials. The focus and elantra were nice but not of the same quality both inside the car and in them not feeling as if they are built from a solid block of steel, as is the gti. Both my focus and elantra felt loose and jiggly on rough roads, but not the vw. Yes the gti costs more but i feel, overall, it is a better vehicle
This car looks really nice but I do wish it was a hatch. Always love the practicality they offer. I know the Forte 5 is pretty much what it would be but I don't think it has the same rear suspension as this one.
I currently drive a 2006 Mini Cooper S JCW. Super fun to drive. Still looks new. But it spends a lot of time at the shop now. I've been looking around at replacements. First car I drove was the MKVII GTI. I don't think the car is nearly as visually exciting as my Mini. It's decidedly plain looking. The interior is nice, though it too is not very exciting. The driving experience like the outside was a bit dull to me. Don't get me wrong, it was definitely refined, but just a bit sterile. This Elantra Sport looks like a small Audi S3 to me out the outside, which is saying a lot. They did a nice job. The interior looks nice but Korean car boring. Mazda, particularly with the latest 3, has proven that a C segment car can still have a stunning interior! It trumps both VW and Hyundai in interior looks. Having not driven the Hyundai, I ask MotoMan, how would you compare the driving dynamics to the mazda 3 GT, a car that is priced similarly to this?
I used to want the GLI when I got that employee discount. Now I want this since I get a different employee discount. But given if money was no object (because that is the only way I can make a sort of rational decision) I would have the GLI. Simply because I've driven that car a lot and know how good it is. GTI is probably the best, but I'm not a big fan of hatchbacks.
You know, it's close. From the rear panel forward it looks great. The front needs some minor tweaks and then it would be a proper sport sedan. I owned two Saab 9-3 Sport Sedans and, to me, that is the benchmark look for me. The Hyundai front end still looks cheap and economy car-ish. Now if they do come out with an N division then Im sure they will beef it up. But awesome review. Love the amount of detail you put into your videos. How does it compare to the Sentra Nismo in your eyes?
I have the Elantra Sport 6mt. VWs just have too many electrical issues even today. I know folks who have Golfs, Jettas and Passats whose cars are constantly in the shop because of electrical issues.
I had a 14 GLI and loved it. Power from the 2.0 is deceptive. I wouldn't compare it to the GTI, different cars to me. GLI yes would compare. All you have to do is look at the reliability of VW and premium fuel requirements and the Hyundai is superior.
How does the suspension feel? I've driven many c-seg as rentals and an Elantra from the previous generation. I agree it needs more sound deadening and the suspension was too soft. It absorbed bumps well but bounced everywhere kinda like when you have worn shocks except it was a new car. Personally, I prefer the Cruze which has a more quiet and refined ride. The overall feel including the steering is more solid.
Wing K Tsui, the suspension is wonderful! Smooth ride that soaks up the bumps with no rebound! My 2013 Elantra bounced over speedbumps from day 1, rebounding 2 or 3 times before it would settle. The suspension in the new Sport model soaks up the very same speed bumps with no rebound needed. It feels very planted to the road. And at the same time it is a comfortable, not harsh ride. They nailed it with the Sport suspension!
I would totally take the hyundai over the VW. My mom has a 10 year old Hyundai Santa Fe with 210k miles, and the only thing she has done are normal maintenance , struts, 3 sets of tires, and a water pump replacement. It's been a great car. I can't say the same thing about the VWs of people I know. Repairs for those cars are more than double.
I'm trying to choose between this and a Mazda 3 Grand Touring Gotta have a manual transmission.. I was pondering the Focus ST but that is too boy racer for me...
Skoda Octavia Vrs 220. (estate) Yes it wasn't on your list but shares the same MQB chassis of the golf. And had a good engine (220bhp/350nm), driving dynamics, legroom and a big boot. Cheaper than the golf, slightly more expensive then this Hyundai. Coincidentally the interior of the Octavia looks very similar to that of the Hyundai. I'd go for the VAG DSG auto box, as it's very good, and only £1500 extra. I'm a European that is a auto convert. Well good autos only.
This car I say is just about flawless. I highly commend Hyundai for their outstanding efforts. Definitely considering getting one.
I think this would be a game changer for most. People don't seem to understand where Hyundai has come from to where they are now. This will be a tuner car in every sense of the word. Great power and style for the money. Just think about adding the following bits and you will have an excellent car:
- Short Shifter
- SRI (Short Ram Intake)
- Grippier Tires
- Sway bars
This is just some of the tunning that will give it a better edge above the competition.

I really like this car, definitely a GLI contender. Would love to take one of these for my daily.
This Elantra Sport of course! The GTI may drive better but will require more repairs in the long run. Based on the latest surveys and my personal experience with my current 2010 Elantra,Hyundai is tops in reliability!
rockerdriver it's impossible to predict real reliability on such new cars. 50k miles with no problems doesn't mean a car is reliable.
If 50k with no problems does not = reliable, what does?
To me the real test is around100K. That's when a lot of things typically can go wrong other than the regular wear and tear items. I don't know why Matt Doyle specifically said 50K. I didn't even mention the current mileage on my Hyundai. It's 86.6K so I'll find out soon enough!

Nav's Showroom do it just got one today great car handles well can't wait till I break in the car to actually feel it

It's amazing how this Elantra Sport looks more sporty than my Genesis coupe 2014 3.8GT
Dude the elantra life is real. I have an 06 and I love it. full cat back exhaust with aftermarket intake and sport springs. 2 inch drop. corners great
an 06?!? sorry but this car is lightyears beyond that.
I would take the hyundai Elentra for two reasons:
1) it is has the best value-to-performance ratio.
I picked up my new, 2019 Elantra Sport DCT 7 days ago (2/23/2019), and I LOVE it!!
As a second car.......definitely. Fantastic price/performance!!!
I love when my favorite content creators work together! See you on TFL car soon?
Roman is still mad at me for beating him on Atlanta Motor Speedway . . . :)
This is a good looking car. I've been eyeing this model since I heard of the release of the sport. When it hits dealerships I may have to test drive one.
same here, I checked my local dealership last night but there were none there. Any idea when it's going to come around?
test drove one and i've gotten alotta smiles out of it :) ... 6MT ALLLLL DAY over automatic.
Ruben theIowan I test drive it in 6MT and loved it! This will be my next car
I'd choose this over a GTI strictly on price and reliability. VW has a bad record in reliability with that 2.0t, water pumps and so on... This comes with a 10yr 100k warranty and some sweet looks. My heart really wants a GTI but my wallet is very scared.
Amen, Ive loved the GTI for decades but so scared of reliability issues. So at the end of the day I stay with Mazda, although I want this car.
60k/6 years basic warranty. Who can beat that. I got extended warranty to 120k powertrain
I’ve owned 3 Hyundai’s and 3 VW’s and they have all been very reliable. Currently on my 3rd Hyundai, a 2017 Elantra Sport with the manual. It’s a very fun car and I can pass someone like they are standing still, yet I can still get 40mpg on my way to work every day.
and it will be everyday commute drive during weekdays and fun backroad drives on weekends
I bought the DCT Tech. Amazing. Can't say enough about the power and handling. The seem perfectly tuned for the car right off the lot. Not to mention the sound system. Excellent for what it is. I'll tune her down the road... but for now she's tons of fun stock. I highly recommend it. 👍🏻🥓
I would most definitely get the Elantra Sport because it's a dependable car and not as expensive.
Totally different car. Totally different driving experience.
This was a good episode to have Nathan cohost. Hyundai has had really successful marketing in Colorado.
And I bet that most will never know that the former head of BMW's M division engineered the ride and will miss owning a truly great C-segment sleeper.
just bought one of these beuties today. 6MT white
Congratulations!! I test drove the white. It's pretty. Enjoy your new baby!
i test drove the civic si (2015) and the vw gti (2015) back to back. the gear box in the civic was a complete dream come true, and the engine had an amazing sound to it. rowing through the gears was magical. but it was annoying loud inside on the highway and the short gears translated to the engine whining at 3000 rpm.
the gti surprised me quite a lot. the amount of low end torque pulling you was subliminal and surpassed the si. the interior was so much more quiet that a deff person would be able tell the difference. the gti felt more alive than the si.
the si gear box in the gti would be a match made in heaven.
this kind of makes me want to try out this new elantra sport.
I don't see many of them on road so good to hear . . .
I'd take this Elantra over the Civic Turbo or the Sentra SR Turbo.
wemay1970
agree
I did. It is a competent car, comfortable. Not as focused or good as my e46 BMW, but pretty good.
I'd choose a GTI. Why - I own a MK6 GTI and absolutely love it. What do i love - the refinement, the driving versatility (good drivers car, and amazing commuter car at the same time), doesn't tire me out, but keeps me happy in the twisties
Former Mk5 owner here. Great car until it hit 50k miles, then all hell broke loose. Never again...
I'm currently at 44K, touch wood, hope everything stays as tight as it is
Have you hit 50k miles yet? :-)
BTW Motorweek reported humming on the new Kia Optima and they had no clue what it was. After investigation, they found out it was the sunfoof seal.
Well, we got a new Veloster Turbo competitor. Its better than the Veloster Turbo because it has rear independent suspension. Good Job Hyundai.
The Jetta GLi is a better example I feel, though you're talking about a $5k price difference right off the bat.
nice wasn't expecting to see ma man Mr Nathan Adlen, cool to see the collaboration!
Thanks - Nathan is a great friend and really is in tune with the auto world. I will try to talk him into coming on the show in the future . . .
I'm a GTI guy so if money was no concern, GTI or R all day. However, I have a 14' Elantra Sport lease coming due next year so this new Sport is almost a sure thing now!
GTis have issues....this is cheaper, longer warranty, fresher and about as much fun.
I would love to see a comparison between this and the new Sentra SRT turbo
Can’t wait to get this, it’s been a good run with my 02 Grand Prix
I leased a 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport w/ premium package (silver) for $250 a month w/ 0 down and after all taxes and fees. I really like it and it's not very noisy when the radio is on. I LOVE HYUNDAI BLUE LINK let's me remote start the car from the app (premium package only). I do regret not getting blue or dark gray. its very sporty and fun to drive but it's not a fast turbo 4 like a 328i
Congrats, in what state did you get that price and how many miles?
If you share the details of your lease, it would help us see how good a deal it was. Did you get $250/mo on a 36/10k, 36/12k longer? More miles? etc... just nitpicking. Thanks for sharing this!!!
I just leased one of these but rather a 2018 just a few days ago.. Such a fun car to drive. First import car that I have ever considered.
Can you share what you paid and which state? I'm shopping now
I love the Elantras!
I want this as my daily driver. Plus you can't beat the warranty
hyundai knocked it out of the park with this elantra sport.
@MotoManTV
Which car? Elantra Sport for sure! Bought one 2 weeks ago, love everything about it! This review is one of reasons I decided on the Elantra Sport (the car I traded in was a 2013 base model Elantra GS Coupe)
Why?
Of course. You get what you pay for.
definitely Elantra love my 2014 so i can only imagine the new sport.
Looks great modded too
Black chrome wheels body kit coilovers look great
Hyundai been stepping up it's game.
Hi Motoman
I'm waiting for the new Civic SI which would be my first choice.
Keep up the good work!!
d tasca the new si is pretty much a body kit now. May as well get a civic sport and tune it you're self.
I want this car with the red interior and the TUIX suspensions like the ones from the Korean market.
I have to downsize to free up space in my monthly budget and I am very much considering this. I was originally considering the Fiesta ST but I think there is even more for your money here than that offered. I'm also waiting to see the Civic Si when it comes out. If I don't like what I see then I'm definitely getting this.
Sound could also be from the tire treads. I've had a car with a noisy ride. Change to a different brand tires and it was much quieter.
if I were to drop anywhere close to 30k on my next car I would probably wait for N brand Hyundai is expected to bring out next year instead of getting GTI or I would just go for this one over anything else at this price point
I’d take the Elantra sport because it had luxury features and looks really good and not to mention is fast, all for a good price
I'm glad they fixed that suspension because my 2012 Elantra limited suspension is some garbage
Definitely a treat! 😬 TFLC/TFLT is a great Channel on RUclips. Great job on this Moto-man.
i wonder if its worth waiting another year for just the possibilty of hyundai adding more sound deadening
There's a dealership in Maryland offering these (and the Limited, too) for 17-20k. Never been more tempted- I've been looking for something fun that isn't in the dark ages of tech.
Direct Sentra sport competitor. Both seem like good deals - ~25k loaded, but Hyundai seems to have an edge with that suspension.
Try the audi a3 1.4 and 2.0 tsi its superb very reliable.. low on fuel
Consumer reports and customers say differently
May e less noise if you shut the sunscreen when driving at high speed. or maybe your camera on top producing the Humm sound ...
MSRP $26,098 loaded. I got them down almost $5,100 off MSRP. Excellent deal, even if it is the DCT
Moto-Man, can you do a review on the new 2017 Honda Pilot. I would like to know if the Apple Carplay/Android Auto is up to par. Thanks!
You cannot compare this new Elantra Sport w/IRS to the old Elantra w/twist beam rear suspension
This is very likely going to be my next car.
Great video. How does it compare to the civic turbo?
I would totally take the hyundai over the VW. My mom has a 10 year old Hyundai Santa Fe with 210k miles, and the only thing she has done are normal maintenance , struts, 3 sets of tires, and a water pump replacement. It's been a great car. I can't say the same thing about the VWs of people I know. Repairs for those cars are more than double.
Do you have an idea when the 2017 sport is supposed to Hit the Dealerships? I really want to take a look at it
keep up the great work!
I'm trying to choose between this and a Mazda 3 Grand Touring Gotta have a manual transmission.. I was pondering the Focus ST but that is too boy racer for me...
I'll take the Hyundai, please. Are the red leather seats going to make it to the US as an option?
Really curious how this compares to the Veloster Turbo...
I have a 2016 Elantra Limited and I love it, but damn I really want one of these, can't wait till they hit dealers here in Canada, I gotta drive one!
how is the ride quality vs the civic turbo? is it smoother over rough pavement or bumps?
affordable sport car
Proud owner of a Mitsubishi Outlander... Yep that's Nathan
And let's not let him forget that . . . :)
Trading in my base model 2016 for a fully loaded 2017 sport. Hope its worth it
