Beautiful rendition of Ave Maria! Also, friction tuners have been working great for several centuries on violins, violas, cellos, etc. and older flamenco guitars.
how do they even stand in? sure too much grip would crack the headstock, so dont say they fit 'snug'... they dont use bolts even... very weird how they keep in place
Great info. I have the 1926 2-17, which was their first steel string models because they began their X-bracing in production that year!. Its because of the bracing those older models need super light strings.
Since we can't pin a year on the decade, this could either be about as old as Helen Keller, or as Charlie Chaplin or Adolf Hitler. A bit more perspective: This is from before Coca-Cola was a soft drink. This is from before the Dakotas, Montana and Washington being officially part of the USA. This could be older than the Eiffel tower. This could be older than Van Gogh's "Starry Night". This is older than PIZZA! Goddamn, this is old!
Gongasoso this is older than the first ever english football championship, this is older than judo, this is older than the first motor car, this is INDEED older than the eiffel tower.
Mark's skill as a guitarist never ceases to amaze me. He always chooses the right song to demonstrate a guitar and he always plays it well. Good song choice to showcase this beautiful guitar. Thanks for the video.
That was more than an episode. That was, at least a little bit, an historic event. how many of us have been playing our whole lives and yet have never seen one of these guitars? Ivory friction pegs! WHAT?! I came across a book somewhere of transcriptions of compositions by 19th century American guitarists. It was clear that these were early examples of American fingerpicking style playing - i.e., there were rags, marches, hymns, and other "popular" styles, all solo instrumental pieces - and they would likely have been played on a guitar just like this. Mark, 'Ave Maria' was a great choice to play; that, too, is a piece that one of those first Martin players might have known and played. We literally got to hear American guitar music from ca. 1880. Thanks so much for this unique treat. BRAVO!
Martin guitars are the gold standard for all other acoustics, period! While I've owned Gibsons and Taylors, my best guitars for tone and clarity have always been been my Martins. Great tune, Mark!
that was beautiful.....................................I was lucky enough to see Andres Segovia in college, have loved this type of guitar music since..
I've been with the GOTD seies sense day 1, myself, my band, and my family love watching the most beautiful, outrageous, and badass guitars to ever be created. The best series on RUclips by far and I'm gonna watch until I can't. I'll cya guys at 600!
Thank you for all the guitar knowledge and wonderful playing you do six days a week Mr. Agnesi. Jenn you do a wonderful job filming, editing and doing all the extra things us guitar nerds don't see behind the scenes. You two and everyone else at Norman's Rare Guitars rule and are very appreciate!!!
I have a 1942 Martin accoustic D-15 model that was my dad's. Everything is original except the strings. lol I love this guitar I never have to tune it. My dad bought it at Ted Brown Music in Tacoma Washington back in 1959 used for $125.00. It's priceless to me and play it all the time. You have so many awesome guitars.
Can't believe how pristine this guitar is , absolutely beautiful , and well played. Kid gloves with that baby , can't even imagine where Norm came up with that , but thanks for sharing.
Mark, your skill and versatility are very, very impressive. Thanks to Mark and Jen for such an informative and entertaining set of Guitar of the Day. Here's to the next 300 - and more Jen!
A shady looking tough boy in black biker leather, who has no problem spewing the "F" word about, sits down with a 125+year old guitar and plays a very nice rendition of "Ave Maria",......Only at Norman's R. G....I love it,...Thanks Mark! Happy 300...
Mark, thank you for picking the most beautiful sounding guitar ever done in guitar of the day, that was amazing and it's probably just me but that guitar in my opinion has to be one of the best guitars on this channel (apart from the white falcon) ever!
Congrats on the 300th episode! I really appreciate Mark's killer playing and I even learned a lot of guitar history from you guys! Thank you guys and keep on rollin'!
Fantastic choice for a 300th episode, a really special and rare instrument. Beautifully done, Mark and Jen. Here's hoping for many hundreds more GOTD's. It is addictive.
What a fabulous sound!! Mark you did that wonderful old lady proud, brought her beautiful voice back from across the centuries! Simply fantastic! Can't wait for episode 301 - now what time will it be in UK??

Cedar Mock How did it feel to have Marks hand running up and down you ?

preciosa
That guitar is almost as ancient as Keith Richards
cmenendez480 LOL
cmenendez480 I sent this to my father, who thinks that the 2005 Jackson DKMG that I bought two days ago is an old piece of shit.
lol
Gave this comment a like, then made another RUclips account just to give this comment another like

Nobody named the tune so I will......Ave Maria from Franz Schubert :)
Ave Maria is one of my favorites. I was first exposed to it in the Disney film, "Fantasia" (1940). Love it, WD Mark.
it's not a contest.... just enjoy Mark's post.
Logical choice, give that he tries to pick something that might have been played on whatever instrument is being shown...nice. GOOD STUFF.
we knew
roger that
Martin guitars are the gold standard for all other acoustics, period! While I've owned Gibsons and Taylors, my best guitars for tone and clarity have always been been my Martins.
Great tune, Mark!
Thank you both for all the great shows guys!
three measures in and tears started. My goodness, what a sound. Played appropriately. Thank you.
that was beautiful.....................................I was lucky enough to see Andres Segovia in college, have loved this type of guitar music since..
That Franz Schubert -Ave Maria Interpretation was beautiful...
Nearly 300 guitars scratched by a motorcycle jacket!
Not Applicable I know, TAKE the jacket off for the NICE ones. I can hear those zippers hit the guitars, nor I'm this video, but others.
I wouldn't wear that jacket on a motorcycle, I like the cheap paint on my fuel tank too much.
They're not your guitars so don't fucking worry about it. Worry about your own shit.
@@gingygingerson8654 He's right though. Everyone used to act like he was taking a chainsaw or something to the guitars.
Quentin Tarantino called. He wants his jacket back.
Mark, Jen thanks for sharing your time with all of us. Much love. JJ
Almost 140 years old, still looks and works perfect, its amazing
#FlatTopFriday #300thEpisode #Martin1880s

Parlor shaped guitars are my favorite kind of acoustic guitars, alongside with resonator guitars.
