The nikon 40mm F2 is a really good lens for that price, especialy coming from a first party lens, i mean except for the build quality it's on par with the 40mm F2.5 from sony but that thing cost 699€ against only 299€ for the nikon ! i'm only speaking of release prices, since i saw the nikon going as low as 199€ for example. When it comes to image quality it's a little soft at F2 ( but still usable and as a matter of fact for portrait it can be good to be a little softer sometimes ) but it's awesome at F4 and basicaly perfect at 5.6 where it's at it's best. Last december i took some photos with it of the christmas decorations in my city and i got some really good bokeh balls, i mean many higher end lenses have cat eye shape bokeh balls but that cheap lense offer some great bokeh :) I'd add that the nikon is partialy sealed, it lacks the rubber gasket but everything else is sealed.
I like it even more because of its "softness" it's the right amount for me. And my client's loved the images that it produced 😁 it has a special look. The new 35mm 1.4 has a similar "soft" look and I'm intrigued!
Great job Ilias. keep up the hard work. I will buy the viltrox one for its sharpness. Bokeh I can fix it afterwards. Sharpness on the other hand its not possible to be corrected at the moment.
I just got my Viltrox today! I didn't like the rendering of the Nikon, or the sharpness wide open. I love the Viltrox so far, and it was only £125! (Park Cameras UK). I think the Nikon is optimised for bokeh, the Viltrox for sharpness, but there isn't a huge difference. I only used Nikon lenses until I got the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 a while ago and love that one too! They don't feel cheap or inferior at all to me. PS I thought it seemed wider than 40mm too!
I was considering Nikkor 40/2, but I've bought Viltrox 40/2.5 (together with 20/2.8) during last prime days on Amazon. No regrets. Quite good lens, nice rendering, sharp enough for me. Of course, you get what you pay for, it's not proffesional lens (the same as Nikkor), but for the money I paid it's even better than I expected. Generally last 3 cheap Viltrox lenses are very good option. I have them all, as first I bought 56/1.7 DX lens, then 20 and 40. I use them with Zfc and in my opinion it's one of my best purchasings. One "con" of is that you have to look at markings on the lens before you mount it, becuse they are identical :)
I love viltrox lenses too! I own many of them. In this case you really can't go wrong. Both lenses are capable of producing quality photos at a really low budget. 💪
@@IliasKoureas I have also 85/1.8 except these 3 cheap and thinking of 13/1.4. Years ago in my analog times I was using only prime lenses and slowly it starts to look like return to old times :)
@@marcinkopacz9462 I have the 85mm too! Really good piece of glass, gives me lots of client's 😁 I'm looking at the 13mm too!! Best wide auto focus lens for any apsc system 🥰 It's good that such an experience photographer like yourself approves these lenses. Thank you for your insight!!
@IliasKoureas I forgot, you should be using it on a full-frame camera, right? I thought it was used on an aps-c camera. On an aps-c camera, the aperture may be slightly insufficient.
@@jonathancho6368 Yes these are Full frame lenses. There are better apsc lenses out there with brighter apertures. If you use these on an apsc you will get less bokeh than what you would get on a full frame at the same aperture. The light in take is the same
I own the Nikon zfc and the autofocus test was made on that body. Personally for travel photography the 40mm is a bit too tight. When I'm traveling I use mostly the 16-50mm kit lens because it's small and sharp. I also take with me the viltrox 23mm 1.4 for night images. But the Nikon 24mm 1.7 is also a good option because of its small size. I've made a "what's in my travel camera bag" video two weeks ago which shows my whole set up for travel photography with my Zfc.
Hard to consider the viltrox given the low cost of both and the tendency for Nikon lenses to hold their value better than 3rd party. Availability is probably the only consideration I would use to look at viltrox. F2 gives Nikon the advantage to me as sharpness is less a concern wide open and nicer bokeh
I love how people have different opinions on the matter and different needs. The comment section is basically 50/50 on these two lenses 😅 personally for my needs the Nikon is the way to go because of its better AF. I can't have my couple out of focus when they are walking between the rice for example. And I don't mind the dreamy look as well (again for.my work). But I understand why people choose the sharpest lens which is the viltrox in this case
As far as retail value I have a near new Viltrox 56 1.7 z mount but decided to move away from the dx format. Sure the lens was only $137 but one of the big known used camera dealers offered me $9 in trade. So much for retail value. Buy one because you want one not as an investment for sure😬
@@Austinite333 9$?? YIKES. Just sell it on the used market for like 80$. Someone will get it at some point. Or maybe talk to mpb. They will for sure give you something better than 9$ haha.
Nikon or viltrox?
Great video Ilias and very entertaining too! I particularly enjoyed the video tracking test haha, brilliant thank you! Jason - U.K.

Wise choice. You can find it even cheaper with some discount codes etc. It's a steal!!!
Got my Viltrox for only $111 during a sale and for that price it's absolutely a win
That's a STEAL

I use many Viltrox lenses and this cheap 40mm is super sharp! And since this is a priority for you and many others , this 40mm f2.5 is a STEAL 💪
I think I am going to go with the Viltrox, it seems to have a nice look and value for money
Can't go wrong with either of them! The viltrox is definitely sharp AF and cheap 🥂
