Still reading? Good! Here's some useful info:
If you need a violin and can't afford the notoriously high up-front cost of one, try finding a proper stringed instruments shop! Most of them have rental and rent-to-own programs that make it possible to get a good sounding instrument if money is tight! We recommend doing that, and not buying one of these DIY kits if you're trying to save money.

I love how they hand write the chinese word 脆 (Fragile) in red colour on the box. By the way, the box looks so beaten up.
Hey at least they put it somewhere in some language that it was fragile. 😉
I was honestly expecting it to be in pieces when I opened the box.
@@SculptyWorks Are you planning to document the violin make process?
Absolutely! It will be on video! ...as soon as I get around doing it and filming and editing. Will take a little while. 😉
Fragile means items have been packed properly, and as such can be tossed around
脆 is crisp instead of fragile (易碎)😂. I guess you can argue that they are pretty much the same but still. It's not standard 🙈
Nobody asked but that red Chinese character on the packaging means "fragile"
Thank you! I actually wondered what that was! 😊
Hey I'll take any knowledge I can get!
Thank you😊
It's more like "crispy" I think? Anyway it's an interesting word choice.
@@yao_exist 🤣
When you know what is referred to as "EVEN bigger nightmare" 😊😋
Also that kitty is sooooo cute!!!

You theory makes sense. Reject parts thrown together in a box and sold as a kit. Good luck to the amateurs that were so unfortunate to buy one or got one gifted. So many failed projects. It probably takes a good luthier to make anything decent from that. It would probably make for a good practice violin when done. Practice is what i need when i pick up the violin again. So sign me up for the giveaway IF it will happen ;). I am looking forward to the videos on the build project. Thanks for going for it... you kinda had to do if after the reaction video on twoset, i guess ;)
When you don't play violin but watched enough TwoSetViolin to notice at first glance that the bass bar is missing :D

Oh my... Bahahaha came here from you seeing twoset violin's "attempt" at making a violin

i can hear it callin'
@@mono-galantis Lovin the way you wanna talkkk~
i think the box and the paper wrappings are more useful according to Ash the cat. hehehe
🐱
I love quality roasting! ❤
I love how I could just hear the confusion in your voice increase as you went further along haha. I’m really curious to see if this violin sounds decent or is just a VSO (Violin Shaped Object, as my teacher would call such things)
About these type of DIY Violins, I read in the comment of twoset's video that these violins are like a cheap and quick way for beginner/medium level luthiers to make violins. I think that's why this exists. I am a non musician so I don't know how legit is this but seemed pretty practical also loved the vid 😙
Disagree... Some of those parts are good, some of them are bad; you have to have knowledge and practice to evaluate them - bad idea for a beginner.
@@xseper I don't clearly remember the whole comment but I do think it wasn't totally a noob but the comment did say that this is the reason why the things that need to have holes don't have it, how it's unbalanced so the person making this still needs to put effort to brand it off as theirs . Again not a Luthier so I can't confirm
From my personal experience, when I was learning (and I'm still learning), these kits were never a thing. Luthiers seem to favor old violins from the late 1800's and early 1900's to learn, and to practice restoration.
I agree with your hypothesis. Now I will never get one of those DIY kits myself. I would love to win the violin if it sounds good.
I bought DiY guoitar to my friend (we made Frankenstrat). I had to do some fretwork (1st time in my life) and I bough pretty nice used pickups, after that it was ok. I think that it depends on instruments. Electric guitar is much easier than violin. I want to have violin (really beautiful instrument) 😊
In fact, if you want to get into luthiery, you need practice materials. You will ruin a lot before you get it right. These reject parts arent bad for practicing on. Setting necks, for instance, no problem to fail on this kit...
I love your cat as much as I love my own cat.

Objects to steel strings. I hope he doesn't prefer catgut.
I just finished rewatching your react to TwoSet! I am so happy to see you upload this!
Edit: I just posted the comment as soon as I opened your video. You discussing the quality of the materials is a great part of the video. I hope to see the violin finished!
Every video is improved by an obligatory cat interruption! That said, this was so interesting to learn the goods and bads about violin parts like this.
I don't have enough fingers to count how many things I enjoyed about this video. It's relaxing, fun and informative with a dose of cat and a potential giveaway. WOW!
I reckon the best is yet to come, so I'll be patiently waiting. Thank you for this video ♥ ♥ ♥
I was waiting for this video as soon as I finished watching your 2set reaction. Glad I watched this and I'm so excited to watch you put it all together plus the bonus good parts you will use too!
Loved this! Can't wait to see the finished violin 🎻
This is really interesting. I'm so glad I got to see this video finally! I've been awaiting its arrival. :)
As a violinist it's really eye opening to see what goes into this.
Can't wait for the next video!
Two missing pieces, along a pile of pieces that are mostly rejects. Yeah, I suppose that's about what you can expect for that kinda money 😅 Nonetheless surprised the bassbar of all things was missing!
I don't suppose the ok soundpost, tailpiece, and bottom of body cost $60 total even if not bought from China.
Some people would not even know it needs a bass and would just glue it together.
They totally would. 😥
😄
I’m so excited to see and hear the result
Are you sure twoset didnt smash their box when they got it for it to be so messed up😂 i guess twoset might be happier to get this Kit. They just got unlucky
I've had enough crushed stuff delivered to know mail carriers can be merciless with our packages! Seems the more "fragile" and "handle with care" you write on it, the more careless they are. 😥
Love this video! Looking forward to seeing the result
Love your video! I am super excited to see what it will sound like in your next video!!
I am so excited to see the final work. 😃
wow i excited!! I hope it turns out good! so happy that you made the video and showed us! Thanks!!
And i hope it will sound good cus i wanna see the winner! hahaha!
I just paid $79 for a similar kit, but it does have a bass bar!! I am giving it to a elderly friend of mine for him to pass some time in his shop. Covid had got him inactive and I told him I got this and he is willing to give it a try! I hope I win your violin kit project!
Yesssss, been waiting for this!!
Cannot wait to see the finishing one 😂 Im curious what kind of sound it will make.
I really want to see your process here! Looks like a very interesting challenge.
Thank you for testing this kit so I don’t have to 😅
I love how this was recommended from the two set violin channel
I have watched this countless times already while waiting for the final result.
yeiii, finally
I was waiting for this video,
hope everything turns well with the violin xD
Ooooooh I cannot wait for this project to be completed! Good luck. At least this kit did not come smashed like the TwoSet guys' so there is hope.
I was so worried it was going to be crushed! Glad it was only missing parts instead! 😂
(hi kitty)
I'm glad the diy violin finally arrived! Can't wait to see the process and the finished product. Was unsatisfied with TwoSet's effort. Lol. I don't play the violin, so I hope someone else is able to get it.
I was right! I'm not disappointed! Love the video! Great analysis one by one, expert's background, Ash as comedy relief already stole my heart (
Comedy relief? He's the star of the show!
(he made me say that! Send help! ...aagh!)
😉
We RUclipsrs that have our cats helping on camera have something special. A way to look back at our friends when they leave us. I lost two of my bow cats in the past year and a half and the third one is sleeping comfortably I hope waiting for her time. Cancer and kidney failure. I don't mean to bring anyone down; just thinking that having them more active in videos is a really good thing.
Aww, sorry to hear about your kitties. But yes, they make great companions on the videos!
Yay the video I was waiting for!!! I can't wait for part2. It was cute how your cat was waiting for you to finish with the box but it seems that he lost his patience and went to play with something else 😂.
🐱
Cant wait to see the result.
Have been waiting for it since you reacted to two set's. Loved it. As someone else said you explaining about the quality of each piece was a great part of it. I'm excited to see what you'll be able to do with that 😊
I think you got it all right when you say they sell factory reject;I bought ,what it seems to be a good deal,a 5 strings bass neck and found out that the nut was badly aligned!
Came here again after couple of months because I like ur kitty and ur humour. Thanks for content!
😊🐈
excited to see the results of this project! GLHF!
HERE IT IS!! I’ve been waitingggg and I’m so glad it has arrived!
Aw man, I thought it was the full video for the putting together of the violin as well xD but this makes sense! I can’t wait for the next video and IF there is a giveaway, I would be extremely happy IF I could win it :3
When I got the package and started filming, I was ready to get working and put it all together! But given the condition of the kit, this will have to be a multi-part series. I'm not a fan of doing it this way, but in the end is better than waiting weeks for one huge long video! 😉
What a perfect video to start your weekend with!
This came from recommendations. I clicked. I stayed for that asmr like unwrapping
Glad to see someone else who appreciates a good Chai Tea Latte!

Well, this is sure going to be interesting to follow.
I really enjoy when videos turn into educational content. I want to see what you can do for these rejects. Agree with your hypothesis btw
hahaha the disappointment face when there was no bass-bar :'D i want to see it done!...
and i want that violin xD
You know it's good when the only thing they get right is the sound post
looking forward to the end product!
+1 armor? Was that a D&D reference?
D&D or pretty much any RPG. 😊
@@SculptyWorks LOVE IT!
I discovered your channel a few days ago and I absolutely love it ✨
Thank you! Glad you like it! 😊
LOL that innocent steel strings was just yeeted. Btw, I guess your cat would be very happy for the new box
Yeah, I hope the steel strings can be used for some other purpose, along with all the other useless/trashy stuff that came in the package. Zero waste living!
Everyone should agree on this: ash is so cute😍😍
cannot wait to see how it sounds like
It's DIY, as you said when reacting to Twoset. Just do it yourselves everything without complaining 😂😂😂
That's much better packaging that what TwoSet got, at least! Excited to see if you can make a proper violin out of this, though I think you should use all the parts that came with the kit, as much as possible. PS I think that box was too big for Ash but I bet he liked it anyway.
The fingerboard is unusable. The geometry is wrong and there isn't enough material to properly correct it. ...and I wouldn't send out a violin with a fingerboard that isn't ebony. 😊
The pegs/end-pin/tailpiece/chinrest, they could be used; maybe not the pegs, they were pre-drilled for strings and we'll have to see if the holes will match up once I set it up. The soundpost blank I can definitely use. Still 50/50 about the bridge blank. We shall see!
I just got done making the bass bar! Break time! 🍺
Aww what a cute kitty 🐱😘.
yessssssss i've been looking forward to this video
even just watching you unboxing it and taking a look at the parts i've learned so much more about the violin, i love it
thank you for teaching me new things!! can't wait to find out what you're able to make of it
ps. pls tell your kitty i love him and give him some pets from me
🐱
Every video on RUclips should have a cat in it, it instantly make the video better
🐈🐈⬛🐈⬛
I think a kit like this would be one of those "fun to try" experiences.
It could be! Just keep your expectations reasonable. 😊
It's the way you kissed your cat and said "i love you" made me soft
🐱
My kit was from a luthier and did cost way more than $40. In mine, the bass bar was included, although not glued in place. The tonewoods were good and I spent some time tuning the top and the sound is actually very nice. Currently making one from scratch using a Guarneri form.
Guarneri is the best! 😉 👍
@@SculptyWorks I much prefer the warmer sound of a Guarneri over the Strad :-)
I think Ash enjoyed the box and paper wrapping more Haha
🐱
I hope you’re able to make it work! It would be so cool if you could make a violin out of such a mess😂
I don't know, but I find it funny when the strings got thrown twice. 😂
Once wasn't enough for those terrible strings!
(and I missed the trashcan on the first throw) 😉
9:50 kitty is staring into a our souls urging us not to buy the diy violin kit
Obey the kitty! Kitties know best! 🐱
When I got my very first violin I got a cheap one and found out on the fingerboard the shape was similar to your DIY violin fingerboard. I didn't know I was playing on a violin with a very badly shaped bridge until I decided to go to a teacher.
Omg! I am so glad I was smart enough not to buy one of those kits! 😂 Good luck!
Side note, I also go for tea! Chai or green tea lattes are my favorites. 😊
Who knows, you might get lucky and get a good one!
...but with the score of one broken by mail therefore untestable (TwoSetViolin's) and one 'unfinished' kit (mine), the odds are not looking too good. 🤔
I approve the Chai tea. :D
Finally! Shipping still took less than I thought.
Best cat assistant. ❤😻
🐱
I know I’m super late to this. But I just found your channel and I love it. Instant subscribe.
Not that late! The DIY building process is still going on. 😉
@@SculptyWorks awesome! Well I’ll be watching.
looking forward to your version, I am sure that you won't just glue them together like twoset😂支持你!
Don't worry, there will be no sticky tape! 😉
HHHHHH You actually did it hell yeah. Can't wait for the next vid
Haha well if you’re going to get a big disappointment in the mail, I’m at least glad you made a good video out of it!
I honestly expected it to be shattered to bits after what happened to TwoSet's. 😉
OH YOU DID IT, many thanks!
If you're following my comments this afternoon, Fox, you'll know which vid I'll be watching next and yes, even I know about the bass bar (from my TwoSet education). Enjoyed this one and so love your cat, Ash...
🐱
oh my.... I'm crying on the inside. Good luck lmaoooo
9:51 gave me a little startle.
Ash has such an intense look 🙀
He's a tiny little predator. 🐱
*Box appears* Cat: Oh, hello there.
🐱
Love your video so much, my cat act exactly the same when he sees a box.. you have a very gentle voice. I hope this "violin" will turn out to something good, but in your hands I am almost certain. Greetings 😻👩🏻🦽🇧🇪❤
Thank you! I will do what I can to make it sound good! We shall see what happens! 😉
My dream is : having the money for a violin, i would love to learn the violin, it's such a great instrument. My cat's name is Ghizmo. Stay safe 😻👩🏻🦽🇧🇪❤
Ah at last it's here! I'd love to see you try to assemble it regardless.
Also, let's talk about how unimpressed Ash was at the violin lol
He's not easily impressed! 🐱
the bass bar you showed seems really tall (like the top edge is far from the violin's plate), is that normal?
No, that bass bar was ugly and poorly made. That's from a so-called 'dutzendarbeit' factory violin from the 1800's, they were made quick and cheap. But it's the only violin I had on hand that was open.
Thank you for video, maybe I will buy some kit, seems to me inspiring, discrepancies and flaws is challenging for me... 😊.
Question is, if body is from solid wood or glued layers. Please, can you mention, how expensive the kit was? and what were your initial expectations? I see this is maybe junk, agree, but price also play role. So, please, make a video, about your local - I do not know, from which country you are - offering of violin kit and price... maybe, it will be also fun.. expecially price..😂 live long...
Oh, this is going to be interesting! They say that limitation breeds creativity. You might end up making a revolutionary new violin design, and the one you give away ends up being valued at $99 million! (not adjusted for inflation)
Nah, I'm not out to change the world of violins here. Just gonna do it the way it's been done for 400 years ...but I would love a few million $$$... 🤑
Even a single million $$$ would be good enough, I'm not greedy! 😁
At least this one is not cracked! :")
Anyway hello Ash! Looking great as usual
He must loves that cardboard very much:))
🐱
I watched a few of your videos but I just realised I wasn't subscribed! Idk why.
Btw. You cat. Omg. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🐱
Is there a violin kit that you could suggest? Thanks
As a traditional violin maker, I would say kits are no-good in general. But I have heard good things about a violin kit sold by StewMac. I tried to get them to send me one for review but I never heard back from them. 😉
I've got one of these abominations. What is strange is that the plates are actually thickness profiled. An unusual length to go to when making a cheap violin. I'll finish assembling it soon and see how well it flies.
Let us know how it turns out! 👍
On a good violin should the finger board be made of ebony?
Indeed, the fingerboard should be ebony.
Lower cost/quality violins often have fingerboards that either are ebony but of lower quality so it is dyed to look better, or simply another wood dyed black.
@@SculptyWorks I'm intrigued. Could you check out Shunsuke Sato's baroque violin on this vid (the one he plays at the beginning)? its fingerboard doesn't look like ebony but probably it's cause I don't know about woods ruclips.net/video/MEOgzUkD-IY/видео.html
That is a fancy baroque fingerboard (and tailpiece). Absolutely traditional and beautiful. They were /usually/ made of maple with inlaid ebony but could be any other hard-wearing wood.
There was less need for the hard-wearing characteristics of ebony when strings were simply unwound gut, so you saw more of these inlaid fingerboards back then, but as they evolved, we started winding strings in silver, and later on other metals, and that increased the wear and tear on the fingerboard thus requiring a harder wood that could be re-surfaced without ruining delicate inlay work.
@@SculptyWorks Thank you for your detailed reply :)
Just landed on your channel - great stuff - thanks for all that
I was wondering: what brand is your thickener measurer thingy?
And also: could you do a video where you buy and evaluate cheap violin parts in renown/not so renown Aliexpress brands? Thanks a million, Sir.
Thank you! 😊
The 'thickness measurer thingy' is an iGaging.
Cheap violin parts? What do you mean? I don't frequent Aliexpress for those, I'm not sure what they've got to offer.
@@SculptyWorks Yeap, in Aliexpress they sell a lot of those items, but there are so many stores that's difficult to find the ones that offer good quality and price. I'm using like, Naomi Music and Fox Music, but I can't compare them at all ;) well, just an idea, no need to spend money in useless things
@@riccardo-964 Yeah, the problem would be we don't have the budget to buy stuff we don't actually want and need to use, so we can't get things just for the sake of reviewing them.
Where did you buy the kit from?
eBay!
How will you make a bass(?) bar. Very interested in this project. Love cat. Enjoy your voice.
Thank you! And the next video will have the bass bar making process. 😊
Out of all the things inside that package the most useful one will be the box for Ash
He actually prefers the wrapping paper. Cats, tsk! 🐱
