Why don't more people know about this? - Elegoo Saturn 8k Review (not the Saturn 2)

- I did it, I got half-naked on the internet for views. Some may say I'm a sellout, but I'm just this committed to my channel! As someone with over 20 years of body confidence issues, I'd like to say this is a celebration of finally accepting my body. It's not, it's showing everyone why I hate it so much. So, anyway, a lot of people have been asking about the Saturn 8k and with this video, we are taking a look at the Saturn 2's most threatening competitor when it comes to the resolution and size vs the price. Weird that we don't see more people buying this one.

What a fantastic little machine! In regards to releveling that style of build plate it's actually very fast and easy. Just ditch the paper method! With the vat still in there (and resin too, it makes no difference), loosen the screws, hit home, tighten down the bolts, optionally raise the build plate 2 to 3 times using the 0.1mm increment setting (might decrease elephants foot slightly), then set Z and you're done 😁
You know what… that is so obvious now I’ve been told!
I bought the Saturn 8K over the Saturn 2 8K a few months ago as I figured the few bells and whistles on the 2 wasn’t worth the extra $100… and totally happy I made that choice…. The only issue I had was I was getting a lot of random floating half cured resin in the vat after prints and yes my prints were coming out rather over cooked!! Grey resin at 2.5s. Then I found your video … I cranked down the exposure time as you demonstrated and AHAh! Perfect faster prints.. 1.7s for 30 micron layers and 1.9s at 45 microns. Thanks bro… the light array on the 8K is quite more powerful than my Mar3 Pro and Saturn 2S. Love it!
This is the sort of comment that makes the effort I put into these feel worth it. Thanks so much!
Excuse my side comment.
I too use Mars3Pro and Saturn 8K and I really like both printers.I picked up Saturn 8K instead of Saturn 2 because I didn’t need taller Z axis for my purpose.
However, my purpose of 3D printing is for dental model making, not general hobby figure making. I use Phrozen dental water washable resin.
My impression from using the two printers is that the Mars3Pro is easier to get right when it comes to dimensional accuracy of the model to be printed out.
I did a lot of research on my own and apparently it was a difference in the UV light system. I feel this is the strength of the UV light in the Saturn 8K over the Mars3Pro as you said too.
However, the Mars3Pro, where the UV light hits the modeling object more on average, has less deviation in the dimensions of the modeling object. This is just my experience, but I hope it will be of some help to you.
May I ask how many burn in layers you do and what exposure time you use on them?
@@julimaple2846i also buy printer for dental models
What now is your expirence please
Another thing I found that REALLY helped was if ur home and the print finishes, I just go in and take the build plate off and twist it 90° and put it back on to let it drip right back into the vat. Saves a ton of time and resin when u go to take the plate OFF and post-process.
Great tip
The quality difference is in the light source:
Saturn 8k: double convex lens
Saturn 2: fresnel lens
Fresnel lens collects and focuses light better. Double convex has spherical aberration (outer lens is less focused).
As for the shorter exposure time in 8k, if you can adjust the light intensity, Im sure youll get the same exposure time in Saturn 2, if not faster.
But does that really make a difference in print quality? Unless you're looking at the print under magnification it's probably not much of a difference.
just done a video explaining this, ruclips.net/video/dpmaqtbrL9Y/видео.html
as for exposure intensity, both at 100%, yes you can adjust, but I'm comparing like for like.
not noticeable on the print to a good 85% of people ruclips.net/video/dpmaqtbrL9Y/видео.html
I can' wait for the comparison video. I definitely gonna buy one of then.
i'll work on it this weekend
@@FauxHammer ❤
Level your build plate with the vat still attached, you can even do it with resin in it. It mitigates having to clean things down to do a re-level. It also gives you a much better level.
How do you do this sorry? Don't you need to use the "card" in the space the resin occupies?
i just did this, Game Changer!
no, the paper basically emulates the space that the FEP/PTFE film takes up. so just leaving the vat in place and pushing the loose plate down against the FEP does the same thing.
Gaw dam, this is a real pro tip right here.
How do you deal with the resin acting like a lubricant, causing the plate to spin? do you just hold it so it's "good enough"? I've noticed there's quite a bit of safe area around where the printer actually prints on the build plate so I'm not sure if i'm just worrying about something thats not a big deal haha
I just purchased the 8k, i was torn between the saturn 2 and the 8k but i doubt im going to really notice and i saved over 100 dollars.
agreed!
Got mine today can´t wait ....
Oooh you’ll love it
Congrats!!

@@FauxHammer yes far better than my Photon Mono X, Mono 4K and Mono,
Biggest thing I got out of this was a flexible resin that doesn't break when you look at it. I need to try that. :) It might keep me in the resin world.
Anycubic DLP craftsman is good for this too
I've been using the 8k for about 4 months and love it. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
glad you like it!
and do you need to re-level the build plate all the time? And do the resin really splash around the tray and up the cabinet sides?
Speaking as someone who had a Mars 2 for a year and only just upgraded to a Saturn 2 in the last week (extra build height was important to me) I really have not ever had trouble with the ball joint connection that Elegoo uses for their build plates. I don't know if it is down to you not tightening the thing enough or maybe defective parts or whatever but I have had runs of 100+ successful prints on my mars 2 without ever needing to touch the build plate and currently I am on run 10 of my Saturn 2 since getting it levelled without it becoming loose. Levelling them and having them stay that way has just never been an issue for me over hundreds of prints.
It’s nit just me saying this. I’ve had the same experience as you with all of my printers that have 4 screws. But every one of these Elegoo ones has lasted only a few prints before it needed releveling
For me, I was initially also having issues with it loosening and my build plate becoming unlevel, but I was new to resin printing and I was chiseling prints off the plate pretty vigorously because I didn't know what I was doing and had seen it done that way by people in their videos. Now my bottom layer exposure settings are correct so my prints aren't glued to the plate, I only use a flat-bladed retractable razor blade as a removal tool, and I always print with a walled raft, so print removal is extremely easy and requires no force. I slide the blade under the raft all the way around the print, then pry up gently, and it pops right off. Consequently, I don't even know when I leveled my bed last. Hundreds of prints for sure. I'm not saying this is the cause of Faux's issue, but I am saying that a lot of people are probably having issues because they beat the hell out of their build plate when they remove prints.
*I also make a habit of cradling the build plate in my hand when I remove the prints, rather than holding it by the mount area like it's a giant ice cream cone, as most folks seem to do for some strange reason.
@@Undoing77 Yeah I use a Voxelab Proxima that has a similar 2 screw ball joint build plate and I only leveled it when I installed it. That said my bottom layer exposure is never set more than 5 times my cure time, and never more than 8 layers. I can typically just start at a corner with the scraper and once it goes under the corner the whole piece will just peel right off.
I just picked up an 8k. Thanks for the videos. My first printer, wish me luck.
Good luck. It’s pretty straightforward. Make sure to join the Saturn series Facebook group
just on the back of this video alone I have decided buy the Saturn 8K cheers chap.
I'll be going down the large models and busts route, the quality of the Isobel model you showed just blew me away and sealed the deal.
100% this printer is amazing! And I love it!

I'm waiting for that battle: Elegoo Saturn 8K vs Saturn 2 ! 🔥
coming next week.
The Saturn 8k is impressive.
Very
Great Vid, although i only have a passing interest in 3d printing (basically how the scene/tech is progressing) i am definitely placing you as my go to on the subject from now on, certainly the best Review of a particular model i have seen, especially given a more sensible ~15 minute video.
Thanks so much!!!! this comment made my day!
Picked up an 8K on black friday, excellent printer, honestly shook at how smooth the rounded bits of things like shoulder pads or titan ankle guards come out.
so good right!, and you can print so much at once!
Wish I had seen this before I bought the Saturn 2 would have saved money. Great info though and will help with my Saturn 2 setup.
I was in the market last year for a good resin printer. Currently the Saturn2 was out and I almost got it but then I saw Uncle Jessy made a video about the Saturn8K coming out and on a helluva discount that came WITH THE WASH&CURE station and was still cheaper than just the Saturn2 by itself. Soooo, I got the S8K and have been extremely happy with it.
TENOUTTATEN
I’m doing a comparison vid if the Saturn 2 Vs 8k at the mo and said exactly this!
Do You need to relevel the build plate often? This, and the resin apparently splashing around inside the machine, are the only issues keeping me from buying the Saturn.
@@lenniskovgaard8278 Honestly I really only re-level the plate once every 2 months or so or when there's some sort of catastrophe (which is very rare). I really don't NEED to level the plate even that much but do so from just being overtly anal. It's really been a great overall resin printer and have continuously been happy with my purchase even now - 7months later.
Cant wait for a more in depth comparison against the saturn 2.
They are supposed to have different screens but if that does not translate into anything like better life span or visible quality then is just paper marketing...I really hope you get to answer that question. Which one delivers the best dollar for dollar worth.
I choose the saturn 2 just because there were no comparisons available atm and rather wanted to play safe than regretting "saving" 100 usd. But if there is no real difference and people don't need the extra 3 - 4 cm in height then there is no need to spend extra.
I think there is a slight difference under macro. But would you notice on a model? Probably not
Holy shit
Upgrading to this over my Mono X and Mars 2. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Now ship already lol
Hope you have it by now
@@FauxHammer I do, the printer is incredible. Virtually no layer lines. Especially once painted.
Just re-watched this video and finally pulled the trigger and bought one to upgrade from my Mars 2 Pro. Yes, the father's day sale did make that choice easier at $333 and the cleaning station duo at $131. 👍 Are you on commission to Elegoo? Hehehe, you should be. Great video Ross!
Haha, glad you got one at such a bargain price. Yep, I’m on commission - if you clicked my links before your purchase lol
Manfoto Ball heads are well liked on tripods for photography, film and slr. Some of the cameras are quite heavy but this offerst the best adjustments. Maybe they need to improve the locking mechanism on the printer.
They are great in cameras because you’re frequently moving them. But imagine having to put in gloves and wash the camera down every time you needed to change it. Maybe not that much, but let’s say you had to do that every 3 times you used the camera. Or risk loosing your next photography session due to all your pics being blurry.
Closest example I could do
@@FauxHammer oh i use a magnetic build plate so i never need to remove it
O mate, I can't wait for you to release the 5Ms review. I just sold my Mono X and impulsively pre-ordered the 5Ms, but after the VG review, I m a tad scared that i f up.
I only print Warhammer for me and my friends, so i totally trust your judgement.
If you think it's shite, imma cancel the order and get this one.

I'll probably follow up on some if @vigmans comments. But I am 100% behind his review.
@@FauxHammer Thanks for answering, I get it and hope you can give us more insight printing for miniatures in the specific.

@@FauxHammer Cheers mate
What a time to be alive! 😁
It's about to get better!!!
These are super great videos, looking forward to the comparison video between this and the Saturn 2. I'm still eye-balling the Mars 3 Pro as here it's pretty cheap, but I worry I'll miss out on printing giant minis, which is part of the entire appeal to me. The Mars 4 is up on Taobao (China retailer) but considering that the 8k is a touch cheaper makes me lean there, but honestly, if the DLP is that much a step-up in user experience, I may just have to bite the bullet...
Quick question: Have you ever worked with water wash resins? Any thoughts? I'm trying to be considerate to the others in my living space and want to minimize smells/toxins/whatever else as much as possible, I don't mind getting filters and getting a grow tent to work out of, but anything that can cut down on smells/fumes would be great.
Again, excellent resource, subbed, looking forward to future content!
Wow, I understand your busy brain with all the choices. Honestly with all you’ve listed. Get the Sat 8k if you can’t get a Sat 2
Never tried water washable, but I do like to remind people that just because it’s water washable, doesn’t mean you can pour it down a drain
This is going to be interesting.
Hope you enjoyed
That's an impressive machine, I'm no expert. Does the 8k resin make a huge difference to say the standard elegoo grey?
Over standard? Very much yes. That standard is terrible for fine details in comparison
Good video mate! Not sure if fell into a trap! But I got triggered badly when you said resin drops falling from the build plate into VAT could splash.... AND then later filled the VAT by pouring the resin onto the build plate top up high. I've never seen it done that way. 😂
Haha, I only do it fir dramatic effect
Ooohhh I'd like one of those...
Get one
I have been struggling with the settings on mine, and you saved my skin. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help!
So I kept going between the m3 and the x2, ended up buying this one with a wash/cure station lol pretty stoked to get it
Good call!

Looks great. I'm looking to print castable resin for jewelry and I'm hesitating between this one and the Phrozen mini 8K
hold on for the 8kS - review coming soon!
I'm not a hardcore 3D printer so I think I'll go with the cheaper 8K model. Thx. Although I still don't understand what's the real difference between the two even after watching this whole video.
Saturn 2 has sharper details, but you’re unlikely to notice on an actual model.
Bahahaha. Wasn't expecting the "Anatomically accurate... mostly" malarky! Funny farka :p
hahah, cheers
what was the cure time you did for that sister whose sword you were bending, and did you use a cure station?
I have had my original Saturn for over a year and have never had to relevel my build plate. The two bolts on the build plate are more than enough if they are tightened properly.
Wish I’d had the same experience
@@FauxHammer I just picked up the Saturn 2, interested to see if it performs as well or if I have the issues you had.
@@kermitec i didn't have it with this, but hostorically I've had it with thiis style.
Have you tried the water washable 8k resin from elegoo? Would you recommend it as much as the regular resin? Here in Spain is a bit cheaper to get the water washable one, and tbh the added benefit of not having to use IPA on the cleaning process would be a godsend...
I might be wrong but I don't believe that the exposure test plate you were printing was designed for 8k resolution. I had a look on Photonsters and the highest res version I could see was released in 2020 designed for 1600 x 2560 not 7680 x 4320 which this 8K has which might explain the results.
I definitely recommend watching my Sat 2 vs Sat 8k video tomorrow as I go in-depth on these exposure tests. ruclips.net/video/dpmaqtbrL9Y/видео.html
I talk more about these tests, but the resolution these were made for are irrelevant, I'm yet to see a resin+printer combo that can print all 15 posts at the resolution they are at. Model resolution and print resolution are not directly comparable, as screen resolution is kinda lost in the analogous nature of liquid materials.
@@FauxHammer Looking forward to that video to hear more
To this days this machine still work it? Or is completely better to go for the saturn 3?
5:20 - Have you tried updating the firmware? I had this exact issue with my first Saturn 2, where the build plate would raise too high and splash all over the inside of the unit. A firmware update fixed it and my second Saturn 2 unit shipped with the newer firmware. It was a real pain on that first unit, though. Resin got into and gummed up the threading of the screws that hold down the vat, and I now have to use pliers to loosen them.
(Also NFEP literally means something along the lines of 'not fep'. PFA is a kind of NFEP film.)
it;s not a firmware thing, Elegoo are advising you print a specific code files which updates the parameters, not quite firmware but a firmware config update. still, should be baked in
thanks for the NFEP tip.
I'm having a really hard time dialling this printer in, miniatures are not coming out particularly well and I'm not sure if its my supports or settings. New to all this but have been watching your videos for awhile. Would love to get your actual final settings for this if at all possible. Room temperature is between 20-25 degrees and using 8k elegoo water washable.
Have you watched my “How to print miniatures” video?
couldn't find this one on aliexpress.
So how does it compare to the original Saturn? I’d love to see a short video about that. I have 3 original Saturns and I’d hate to upgrade if I don’t need to.
Sorry, never had a Saturn.
How is the customer service? I heard that Anycubic customer service is horrible. Support doesn’t exist.
I’ve not had to experience any of it so I can’t fairly comment
This is the 1 i want but cant get it anywhere
do you have a video on the saturn 2 8k?
Just ordered mine. Decided that I prefer a smaller machine and 4cm will not make much difference. Besides that I doubt that I will notice difference at details.
I get surprised that there is such a difference at the exposure.
May you please share your final settings?
Thanks
Good call, if this has helped you make a better choice for you, then I’ve done my job.
As for settings, it’s exactly as I showed in my 8k video but with the exposure times i spoke about.
Same, waiting for mine to be delivered. Getting other stuff ready in the meantime (grow tent for enclosure, tools etc, I will buy extra table for it too.. Im hella excited!) I love FDM printing but I print mainly statues and dioramas and resin is much better for that. Cant wait
What were the exact settings you used I’ve been testing and you got way better results

@@FauxHammer well since I run a model car 3D printing company and I have 12 Elegoo machines and each machine runs between 1 and 3 times a day some stuff big some stuff small, I am pretty sure that's a pretty descent amount. The last time one of my machines got out of level was cuz I dropped the bill plate from on top of the machine between Prince I used to have printers with the four post system if you want to call it that and I still do have one which is the mega 8K all I can say is for up to the size of the Saturn 2 I have never had an issue with it I could see something as big as the mega 8K not working with a ball socket
@FauxHammer Would you say having a custom air filter necessary, or is the included carbon filter enough? I would have to have the printer in my living room.

@@FauxHammer Haha I understand, looking to print only for painting, so obviously I want very high quality, I am thinking about mars 3 pro or one of the Saturns.
I heard resin is nastier and harder to use
Than….
Your review made me decide to buy Saturn 8k and after 1 week with it im very sad with the results. My Mono 2k prints almost with the same quality then this, its faster, the two screws holding the print bed its a joke unlike Mono 2k have 4 screws, on the Mono 2k you dont need to unscrew completely the screws to take out the vat and this red case lets the sun or light go trought becasue sometimes i have cured resin inside vat.
I’m sorry, I didn’t compare this to the 2k so I don’t know what the quality on that is like.
If it is a smaller display then you likely have a similar pixel size, but I need to look at the spec to confirm.
What resin are you using with it? Could it be that your resin is not capable of a higher resolution than what you have always printed at? And I’ve never had resin cure in the cat but I’ve also never had the printer at in direct sunlight, so where is your light coming from? The kids are all UV prevention, not protection.

So for someone that’s new to all the 3d printing thing what would you say is the printer with the easiest start like mini 8k photon d2 Saturn 8k saturn 2 or m3 premium iam kinda overwhelmed by all those but a easy start would be the biggest selling point
Easier printers to use are DLP. They use projectors and the light is so sharp that it’s hard to over expose. Lcd printers have a good print range in tenths of a second 1.2 is very different to say 1.7 seconds.
On DLP you can print at 1.2 seconds or 3.2 seconds with only minimal difference in quality.
