    When we had our kitchen renovated, the cabinet company was unable to put pullouts in our pantry cabinet due to its narrowness. The shelve are 11" wide and 23" deep so it was impossible to see or reach food at the back. Enter Walmart and their clear XL storage bins. They were the perfect size to fit the cabinet, at 20" long they reach almost all the way to the back and slide out easily so I can pretend I have built-in pullouts!

    I agree that Marie Kondo's book really stands out in a very (ironically) crowded field of decluttering books. Too many people, in simplifying her message actually missed a lot of the nuance found in her slim volume. It is worth a read for sure. That book kicked off my decluttering journey in a whole different way years ago and while I still feel like I can do more, I know that I wouldn't have come this far without having read her book.

    • @cactusbutterfly2939
      @cactusbutterfly2939 4 месяца назад +14

      I agree completely! Her method of gathering things from all over the house, like all the books, or all the clothes, and seeing the volume was "life changing" for me. It is easy to not realize how much of something you have until you see it all piled up! I know, Dana's method works for many, but for me, Marie Kondo's method is what I needed!

    • @ruthmgonigle5914
      @ruthmgonigle5914 4 месяца назад +12

      Agreed it was so well thought out. I used to read decluttering books before the three ladies Dana, Dawn and Cas. And I deemed books BK (before Konmari) and AK (after Konmari)

    • @catlady9123
      @catlady9123 4 месяца назад +13

      On the other hand, for me her method doesn't work at all. ADHD attention span, all I'd see is a pile of say books out and then I'd get anxiety paralysis over trying to figure out what to do with them, then I'd get distracted by something else (like finding a book I want to re-read and forgetting about the pile) and all of a sudden that pile is still there 3 week later causing me more anxiety because it's "cluttered". I felt like a massive failure because everyone was saying it was THE WAY to declutter and I couldn't manage it.
      Finding Cas, which led to me finding Dawn and Diane is what finally got me to figure out a method that works for me (combined with some advice from Mack from Magic Cleaning) and I finally got 17 trash bags of garbage (broken stuff, missing pieces, etc, stuff that no one would want) and 4 full sized SUV's full of donations out the door in a 2 week period.

    Was just speaking with my husband and we have a 1700 sq ft home in a neighborhood. We have about 3 acres it sits on. We both would love about 20 acres and so we were discussing how that would look. It was so thrilling and exciting to know I would be completely fine with so little. A small home with little inventory. Not worrying about having the biggest house with all the greatest furnishings. We have a toddler and another on the way and it’s so nice to never feel that our house is closing in on us. I’m constantly decluttering and I appreciate all your videos. Thank you! Thank you for showing me that joy is not in the items but in the memories and experiences with my family.

    Marie Kondo’s method saved me when it came to finally tackling my basement clutter. It was just so overwhelming, so I finally realized that if I break it into categories, then it would be so much easier to accomplish. I started by going through all of the clothes I had outgrown and sorted through those and bagged them up for donation. Then I went through all of my boxes of teaching materials from my former career and threw out paperwork and donated books. Then did the same with my other categories.

    Just wanted to add, I noticed you had rolls of shelf liner sort of standing/leaning in a rectangular multi-purpose bin. I put my rolls of shelf liner and other rolls of things in a tall round plastic waste basket. I find that when I match round with round, such as jars/bottles on a lazy susan or yarn/tennis balls/spherical things in a round basket, it makes a huge difference and makes organizing those things so much easier.

Being able to SEE how much is inside makes planning my grocery list a breeze!!

  • @zzzzzz4539
    @zzzzzz4539 4 месяца назад +41

    Concerning food storage, I "have to" decan things because of insects (moth...) and I use well sealed glass jars. Best system I found through practice is to have at least two jars of every item, so I use one, the other(s) is waiting (in the pantry). When I finish the fist one, I can fill it with fresh food after next grocery shopping and because of the second container I never run out of that item.

    • @stargazerbird
      @stargazerbird 4 месяца назад +4

      Yes you need two bins. I got cupboard beetles when I lived in Singapore. They came in on a bag of wild rice. They got inside everything, including spice jars. So it all went in airtight containers. My mother in law got cupboard moths. There was just one bag of flour that she hadn’t stored in a bin and they set up a family in it. She doesn’t bake now so the flour was left for a year. It’s impressive just how quickly insects can destroy a whole kitchen of produce.

    Our set up is a little different, so they keep their bin in their closet-but it’s so simple to carry to the laundry room… they start their wash, set the basket on top the washer, then when the laundry is transferred to the dryer, the bin is set in front of the dryer door. Then, it’s so simple for their clothes to be put right into their bin to carry back to their room to put away 🤯 Thank you for all your tips, Dawn!!

    My favorite containers are the basic shoebox-style plastic boxes you can get for about $1 each at any discount store. They have the same footprint as the taller boxes;they’re just shorter. For me, it’s easier to see what’s in the box and easier to grab something out. They also work in some dresser drawers. And they come with lids so you can stack them sometimes.

      Another benefit of Mason jars is that they have heft. I've developed muscles in my arms without having to do boring workouts. Just going about my days keeps my arms and bones strong. Seems to me you would either have to use up all product in the container, or pour that bit in the container that is left, into a bowl, decant the new package, and then pour the old stuff on top. Otherwise, the stuff on the bottom will be really old and stale???

      @@jonap5740 Maybe try canning jars. You can use multiples, which is handy because you put away extras as you empty them. I use IKEA glass containers, which fit in cupboards easily.

    I appreciate hearing the reasons why certain containers work well for you. we all have our own unique space and style so hearing that you like it because it has handles or it fits a load of laundry or the slim shape fits in an awkward cabinet. I don't have a container store near me (probably a good thing). i like hearing the why so when I am out and about at target or Wal-Mart or wherever I can make good decisions on what is available. My gosh, square containers make so much more sense than round. Remember the round Tupperware canister sets? I had the blue ones. 😏
    Thanks for sharing. I love to organize. Me in my happy place🤗

    Important to remember: Most dry goods have an expiration date. I keep a pack of small labels and a pen in the back of a drawer to label things I’ve decanted with their expiration date. I also label the expiration dates on refrigerated items as well.

      Canada's public broadcaster just did a program on expiration dates. They are not required by law, and it's the same in the U.S. Most are artificial, and don't reflect food safety concerns. Food is safe and nutritious long past most expiry dates. Exceptions are dairy where we can tell when those expire!

    • @zabmcauley5647
      @zabmcauley5647 4 месяца назад +2

      It's good to keep track of the expiration/best before dates so that we use older products first. Most dry goods don't expire at a certain time though. Flavour/texture is generally better before a certain time, most dry goods don't become unsafe to eat unless they get wet or bugs in them.

    The large basket weave bins are in the dollar tree+ section now too for $5, love them🙌. Also I'm cracking up because I finally used my rice sitting in my pantry after new years clean out. Dry rices especially if still sealed are good for years after their expectations as long as no moisture or package degrading happened, we're still here and dinner was delicious 😂so that's a good thing lol😅.

    Marie Kondo got me going when I tried her method on my clothes. I think the main best idea was to take everything out first. That made a difference to me. But some of her ideas are not true for different homes. for example, I save some things, kitchen pans, dishes, and other stuff because I think one of my grandchildren who are starting college might need them. Marie would say that other people will never want them, but guess what, they do! Grandkids come and pick through my cool "junk" and they actually need some of these kinds of things. I am so glad I can just gift them those things, including bedding, etc. I have 39 grandkids, so most of them come from big families who need all the support they can get as they start off to college. I'm so glad I can help. I love you Dawn. One of my sons lives with his family in Burnsville, MN. They've raised 5 kids and they all love cold snowy weather, thanks to MN. lol Your friend and extra grandma if you need one. Anita.

      Our kids are in their 30’s and don’t want our stuff. They make more money than we do by a long sit and consider our stuff junk for the most part. The stuff they want is vintage collector items that we actually still use as decor or our paintings… anything they can sell not use. My hubby wants me to sell everything and get what I can but it takes so long on Marketplace… they haggle and ask you to meet them halfway etc. Pain in the butt!!! I have 4 Pyrex Bowls still sitting at the door 1 week after purchaser paid $50 by transfer so my house looks like it’s dragging because of this… next time I’ll just donate it. I’ve spent 30 minutes at least texting back and forth so way too much time wasted… plus hurrying home to have them cancel coming to get it and now 2 days later it’s still here. I just got rid if containers for food as I won’t use them. The flours get forgotten as the sugars etc. We don’t use rice or pasta much anymore so open bags in one large container and new ones in another. I use to do that though. They were too big and ended up in back of pantry and got forgotten and I’d buy more thinking I had none.

I love them and they fit perfectly on my bookshelf. I use mine for memory boxes, stationary, gifts and wrap, etc. For a time I also used them for clothes since I don’t use a dresser. Now I’ve minimized my closet so far, my closet now fits a hanging organizer that I added bins in the slots for the underwear, socks, and folded jeans, etc.

    Go Dawn! Such a great video. I'm a bit of an organizational freak. I love those Walmart Cereal Bins.
    If I'm not mistaken, The Container Store's multi-purpose bins actually come in 4 different sizes - Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. I have them all over my house and even in the extra freezer. They are fantastic and I find that they are a pretty good value.
    Another thing the Container Store sells are their big white Sterilite totes that I found were a lot less expensive than even Walmart. I got a set of 8 of them for our storage room for an excellent price.
    Their free membership perks often gives me an extra 25% off my purchase as well. So, not all their items are over-priced, and for the durability and versatility a lot of their items are really well priced for what you get. Once upon a time, I spent a lot at the Dollar Store on all their colorful bins and ended up throwing out a lot of them because they were so flimsy!

    I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying your videos. I had to come to my computer (yes, computer!) to comment bc I'm watching them on my tv. I'm plodding through clearing out stuff, selling some and donating items. You're right; we assign more value to our own items! I have little cupboard space in my kitchen, so I like your idea of putting lids in one container that I can just pull out. You have me looking at new ways to store items, after determining what do I really need to keep. We're FAR from clearing a lot out yet, but I'll get there. My husband wants to store a LOT of toys for the visiting grandkids (five kids ranging 3 months - 6 years) and there is a lot that they never choose to play with. He's adamant that he wants THEM to decide what I pass on. But he wants me to wait until the infant is older. Oh well. I'll keep working on other areas.
    And p.s. your natural hair color is just stunning. (from a conversation on an earlier video that I never commented on...) Be well!
