And firstly, enjoy planning your trip to the Philippines! :) Re the Karaoke machine: one of the stories re this goes that Roberto (the inventor) wanted to produce it commercially but got no support from the Philippines (the government or private benefactors) and so, he sold the patent to the Japanese who were able to bring it out into the world. Or went into partnership with them. It is sad that the lack of support in the Philippines for inventions in the fields of science and the arts (and others) has led to other countries benefitting from these inventions. One other story (or maybe a tale, since I have yet to read a documentation on this) is that the inventor of the fluorescent lamp (which has now been replaced by the more efficient LED lamps) is a Filipino by the name of Flores - thus the 'fluores' in fluorescent. General Electric (GE) then got hold of the patent and the rest is history. I could go on but this is getting too long. :P
Sadly, those stories are NOT true. It was a Japanese who invented karaoke. Even the term karaoke is Japanese. There was karaoke already by 1971, BUT the inventor did not patent it. As for Roberto del Rosario, according to sources, he invented a "version of a karaoke machine between 1975 and 1977" and then he patented it by 1983. So Roberto del Rosario may be the holder of the patent, but it does not make him the first one who invented karaoke. And the fact that Roberto del Rosario holds the patent also means it is NOT true that "he sold the patent to the Japanese". The story about the fluorescent lamp is also NOT TRUE. There was already a patent for a type of fluorescent lamp in 1901 and Agapito Flores was born in 1897, which makes him only 4 years old during that time. And the term "fluorescent" (based on "fluorescence") was used more than 40 years BEFORE Flores was even born so it could not have been named after him. I'm sharing this because I felt really bad when I learned these facts as an adult because I used to believe those lies for more than 20 years because of what were taught in school and even printed in textbooks.
