Boy, really quick is right. By the time I got QGIS downloaded you were done, so I have to watch about 10 more times to really get anything out of your video. Thanks though!
Even though this video is 4 years old, the information given, was easy to follow. Thank you so much, no more snazzy maps or mapbox, this software does so, so much. Plus once you get to grips with it the possibilities for laser cut maps etc is limitless. Again Tanks
It would be really nice to see how exactly you made the topographic map. Start with getting the data to setting it up in QGIS to burning it in Lightburn. I would like to make topographic map that incorporates land and sea if you could show how to do that I think alot of people would really appreciate it. I can't find alot of good information on setting this up. Thanks in advance
Hey dude, I don't normally comment, but I just wanted to say that this is an excellent turorial! Big thanks to you lad. This is exactly what I am looking for!
Thanks for the great tutorial! I recently bought an SVG file from a shop on Etsy that custom creates these sorts of maps, but I'll have to try this out myself next time.
This is great information! Thank you for posting! I was recently made aware of QGIS and have been leaning a ton and this helped immensely! Would love to see a video on the oceans/lakes. I would like to incorporate that into a topo map. Thanks!
Hey, thanks for the tutorial. I've been able to get most of it to work, but I haven't been able to get clipping masks to work within lightburn. Might there be any key steps I'm missing? Thanks!
Fantastic information. I'll probably try something like this with my cnc router. I couldn't help but think that is one massive freeway right next to campus.
I love your channel!! Just a couple of random facts.... my dad's next door neighbor is from Athens Georgia. His name is Al Henderson and he LOVES Christmas trees. He has a second home in the North Carolina mountains Just to grow Christmas 🎄 which he takes back to Athens to sell each year. Secondly the coach of Georgia Tech football team is from my home town. His name is Paul Johnson and his family still lives here.
@@ArionJMcCartney Gottcha! So I walked through how I got all the building/road data but speed through the elevation. You can download data sets of elevation from the USGS. Then inside of QGIS go-to raster > extraction > contour and pick the image you have to pull the data from. Then you can customize the heights that you want lines, starting elevation and a bunch of other stuff.
That's awesome! Be sure and check out Further Fabrication, I did an interview with him and he just finished making and putting out full plans on his DIY CO2 laser: ruclips.net/video/7-qBckfHVvk/видео.html
Hi! Great video! Just started learning Illustrator but I could not create a Clipping Mask - not shure what that does but I will google that later. Anyway when I import that file into Lightburn all my roads are just thin lines even if there were a lot thicker in Illustrator and QGIS. Any idea why? Thanks!
I do have the same problem. Lightburn only interpret the path instead of the stroke. You may redraw the path in AI but then I face a ton of additional path information and in Lightburn the lines are thicker but not closed or shows all single parts of the vector. Up to know I have not figured it out. Have you found a solution for this issue?
Cool as an overview but could not call it a tutorial - tutorials teach and DO get down into the weeds!!! They also understand students know nothing and go slow with big screen shots showing menu items being selected... you know... teaching? Then you can call it a tutorial that gets down in the weeds
Enjoyed it, Brandon! That was a great walkthrough of how to do this type of thing. I think I'll try to come up with one...maybe where my wife and I got married. One thing I'll have to get over as a hurdle is that the Glowforge doesn't recognize clipping masks. Not sure how to get around that in the software.
Wow didn’t know that, I haven’t tried it but you might be able to export from a vector software a straight DXF file. You could also do a work around and bring the file in a Lightburn (using the 30 day free trial) and then export the DXF directly from there into Lightburn if it takes that file.
@@makeorbreakshop Hmmm...not sure. I've never messed with Lightburn. Might have to give that a try. The Glowforge doesn't use DXF files. It can use pretty much everything else, but those.
Thanks for this great and amazing video, this is really cool feature. Would be nice if you show how to get data from underwater levels in QGSI would be very thankful :D I it tried many times but no results for now :(
If I were to give you good advice, then "SSSSSSslow down" . It's impossible to see and follow what it is you are doing, what you use of tools in the programs you are using.
Great tutorial! I haven't engraved yet, but I'm still playing with the program(s) to get the file looking the way I want. I was having a hard time with Illustrator, but, I think the problem was I wasn't getting the fill right in the map program, as well as not "expanding" the layer I wanted before uniting the layer.
I'm not sure if its a new update but the QuickOSM has a preset called "Urban" that will pull like 95% of the data you need into multiple layers in under 90 seconds. I did almost all of metro Tucson which I wasnt able to do with the other method. It kept timing out on me and said pick a smaller area.
@@bartclaeys when you open the QuickOSM menu on the left side you'll see the tabs click the top most tab and itll give you the urban preset. You'll still have to chose canvas or whatever but it'll pull almost everything. The 5% tends to be little things like water fountains, pools, and grass areas. But in my experience all the roads, buildings and paths are all there. Its sooo much faster too.
Wow, I'm subbing. Ive been wondering how people make these because for some reason images of topographic maps seem to be so copyrighted. This software looks awesome. I really love the map and lake stuff. I have the same or similar blue 50W laser as well. I've made a bunch of cool stuff and feel the possibilities are endless.
Very nice video. Thank you! I am looking to do some 3D files for my laser to engrave. The way that it reads it is through a black and white bitmap file. The darkest areas are engraved the deepest and as the shades of gray get lighter, the laser engraves with less power creating a 3D effect. Is there any way to manipulate the map data to do this. I know it's kind of a tough question but I'm trying to get more into this. Thanks.
I have one question though, when I try to merge my road data in illustrator, all roads inside my frame (white artboard?) disappear. What could I be doing wrong?
I don't have illustrator so I'm trying this in inkscape. I'm having difficulty getting the different widths to my roads when exporting to lightburn. The roads are coming in looking like dxf files. I think I'm supposed to change the roads to shapes in inkscape but I just can't figure out. Would you know the process you do in illustrator but for inkscape?
OMG. I bet this would have been a great tutorial, but I stopped watching it after 2 minutes. The background music is so distracting that it makes it difficult to understand what you are saying. I sincerely hope you make an updated version of this video without any music.

I"m sorry, but this video is terrible in my opinion. When introducing a new software to people, you do NOT constantly zoom in and out and talk a mile a minute. This is another excellent example of "just because you CAN do something, that doesn't mean you SHOULD." I would love for you to redo this video so people can actually learn from it.

@PopCultureLaser That would have been hard to guess from your channel name 😉
nothing wrong with that!
Why did you choose PDF instead of DXF?
Sorry I have found it..
Oh my word this is so convoluted
