HEAVY HAUL TV: What do Pilot Cars do?

  • Pilot or escort cars often accompany trucks hauling oversize and/or overweight loads. This requirement will be set forth in the Trip Oversize Permit issued to the trucker. In my case, I needed 1 escort car to help me detour via a 2-lane highway in PA. My 11'2" wide load was prohibited from a 7 mile stretch on I-79 north of MM7 in Pennsylvania. Enjoy!

    Well that detour road was scary so narrow that is why you had a pilot driver ahead it was a good idea , take care Sergei !

    I love how they route you on a road with a 10 ton weight limit. I think they route oversize loads through crazy routes just to mess with you. I did an easy 9'6" wide a few weeks ago and they get plain stupid on the routing. Pennsylvania though has some real white knuckle routes. Another nice vid, see ya out there, rolling to Denver on Monday.

    Nice job, looks like the Mack is performing very well for you. Really appreciate you making these videos, showing everyone all the hassles we have to deal with on a daily basis, ever changing weather, mototist, crazy detours. Your putting a lot of drivers lives on video, its like watching myself thru your lense because there are alot of us out here going thru this daily, we just dont video it. But thank you for doing it for us.

      Dan Whiteford yeah, there were lots of curves where I had to stay in the middle but couldn't see far enough ahead. without the pilot car i might have had problems avoiding oncoming traffic. his job was to warn me on the CB and also flag down cars coming from the opposite side. 5 minutes into this ride i knew my oversize PA permit said I needed the escort car!

    All clear! Good video. I am a pilot car driver. One question I ask the driver. Do you want chatter or only when there is an issue or an up coming issue? Some drivers want a lot if chatter. In fact, a few drivers want to carry on a conversation, which I frown upon because I like to concentrate on the load and my driving.

      You can get certified, Utah is the best certification out there, there are a few others, you must carry a commercial million dollar policy, have a vehichle to set up with no less then a 110' wheelbase. Absolutely no Prius, must be good looking dependable vehichle.

    I know why now It seams like your driving faster... it's the wide angle lens on the camera that give the impression your driving faster but in fact your not...
    I had to pick up a papago 60 and test it out for my self.
    When you change it from wide angle to a normal angle it does not make the side of the road look like they are going faster then the full wide angle.
    I should of known that when I installed security for a year and came across the same problem one time before on a B&E video.

    • @HHTV60
      @HHTV60  9 лет назад

      bringjeffthehorizon i have no idea. i double checked the permit twice and talked to the pilot guy. he guided another truck the same way and that guy was just under 80K lb. there were no bridges on that road. i guess the DOT decided to use this road to help detour truck from the construction on that portion of I-79. what was i supposed to do? i had a permit with a detailed route!

    when you are in canada it is imperial gallon it s little bigger gallon than us gallon

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 лет назад

      Luc Bouchard Yes, a imperial gallon is about 20 percent larger than a US gallon. One of the reasons why Canadian gasoline or diesel is more expensive in Canada than a US gallon is in the US.

    • @HHTV60
      @HHTV60  9 лет назад +5

      There is no such thing as imperial gallon. Truck stops in Canada sell fuel by LITERS. Truck stops in USA sell fuel by GALLONS. 'Imperial gallons' are only used by people who are ashamed of their poor fuel mileage and try to make the MPG number higher
