I've been on methotrexate for 6 months for RA, 20 mg once per week ... It has improved my RA symptoms, but the nausea and general malaise that the medication causes was becoming more pronounced over the past month or so. Rheumatologist said to take 10mg for a month, which I tolerate well so hoping I can stay on that dose. Didn't know RA was a serious and lifelong condition until diagnosed! ... Thanks for explaining the pros and cons of methotrexate, it's always nice to get reassurance that it's a safe drug that helps us live our best life.

Thanks for the reassurance, I'm to start methotrexate tomorrow for awful rheumatoid arthritis. Thanks so much for the very wise information. Paula, New Zealand

Thanks for this helpful overview of methotrexate and its side effects. I take it for rheumatoid arthritis and struggle most with a methotrexate 'hangover' every week. I'm already prescribed folic acid 6 days a week. Is there anything else you'd suggest trying to reduce that side effect?

for my son low dose methotrexate works well but the neurologic toxic side effects- he cannot tolerate. He feels like it is going to explode his brain, persistent cough, and bizarre mood changes. He has tried everything- increased folic acid, leucovorin, dextromethorphan. nothing helps and he has had to stop

That sounds really scary! My daughter is starting it this week & of course, I’m worried. I hope your son found something that works better for him.

Do you recommend taking Folic Acid the day I take Methotrexate. I take Folic Acid daily but have read it could interfere with absorption of Methodraxte if taking on same day. Please share your thoughts. Thanks

Ms Magpie how’s it going with your hair. I’m starting the medication next week for RA. I want to feel better but my hair is certainly a part of my identity. I’m old enough that I’ll live with what comes but I would love to hear how you’re feeling and how your hair is these days.

I've been on 3 tabs I x weekly for 5 months for Lupus, I take them at bedtime Wednesday, feel great Thurs Friday I start with upset stomach, Saturday I feel horrible (digestive issues) Sunday I have lower intestine pain and diarrhea that carries over into Monday and Tuesday I feel good, Wednesday morning my joint pains and aches start back. Same cycle every week, do you think injections would help? Methotrexate has helped overall but it has drawbacks.

I have a love hate relationship with MTX. I have significant negative side effects but we haven’t found an alternative that works this well on my joint pain (Lupus, MCTD, not RA). I recently started Benlysta and it’s working great for the Lupus related blood markers but it’s not helping the joint/MCTD symptoms) so my Dr wants me to add MTX .4ml/wk inj back. Even with Leucovorin I still experience severe musculoskeletal pain during 24-72 hrs post injection. Any tips or suggestions for how to clean up after the MTX war so I’m not spending a third of my week in absolute misery?

I’ve been on MTX 20mg once a week for the past two months for scarring alopecia lichen planopilaris. I didn’t have any side effects till today. I took the medication 7 hours ago and I have nausea and fatigue. Why I suddenly now experience side effects after I’ve already took 20mg for a few weeks without any side effects?🤔

That’s a tough one. Could be a number of things. You’ll have to run that by your doctor

I have been on MTX injections for 9 years and it has been a real game-changer for me and has given me my life back. I inject at bedtime on a Saturday night and have very few side effects. MTX is my wonder drug!

me too. i took an imitrex (sumatriptan) that i have for migraine but no help. finally broke down and took an "excedrin migraine" which has aspirin and tylenol and caffeine in it- even though i think you aren't supposed to take nsaids with it- but alas- my headache resolved! so maybe try that? i'll ask my doc if it's ok for me to take routinely, if every week turns out this way....
