  • This RUclips video presentation is concerned with different types of quantitative data.
    Understanding the different types of data is crucial for selecting the most appropriate statistics and diagrams to explore, present, describe and explain data.
    Using a decision flow chart from the book ‘Research Methods for Business Students’ (Fig 12.1) and a series of questions the presentation explains the different types of categorical and numerical data.
    For categorical data, definitions and examples are given of descriptive data (nominal data and dichotomous data) as well as ordinal (ranked) data.
    Two alternative categorisations are put forward for numerical data (1) discrete data and continuous data (2) interval data and ration data.
    The importance of precision of data measurement is outlined and examples given of coding data to make it less precise.
    Further reading is outlined.
