Terrible Tap Water: Testing Brita & Zero Water Options (TDS meter)

  • First video of 2021!
    This was by total accident and a suggestion from my son about our tap water. We've been using a Brita for years...and finally got a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter to measure how "clean" our filtered water is (and to be a bit more gentle on the new espresso machine that we are constantly using).
    OMG...I was shocked after testing our tap water and then the Brita filtered water. Decided to give Zero Water a try as well.
    So this video is our recent journey on trying to get cleaner water (a family member 20 miles away has a TDS reading for their tap water at 150 and with a Zero Water dispenser/filter, they get a TDS of 0) by testing the following:
    1. Tap water
    2. Brita dispenser with 13 day old Zero Water filter
    3. Brita dispenser with a brand NEW Brita filter
    4. Brita dispenser with a brand NEW Zero Water filter
    Surprising and honestly disappointing results, IMO.
    Needless to say, there will be a part 2 of this video once our Zero Water dispenser arrives so we have a "pure" Zero Water solution to test again.

    Nice comparison... one observation though... there was still some Zero filtered water left in the pitcher when you added water to filter through the Brita filter...

      My less than scientific methodology. My water is wicked and the Zero filter works...for about a month. Brita doesn't do anything for my water.

    I worked in a city water purifying plant for many years, testing water in their lab. Please folks, stop looking to a TDS meter to see how good your water is. Its a conductivity test that reads in ppm. There are many more important factors, and a lot of research is required to figure out what their individual test results mean. And don't look to your municipal water treatment plant supervisor for good advice either. They'll tell you what they want you to think. I myself did not drink the water that i made as an employee there. And i still don't.

      Won't the TDS meter indicate when your water filter stops working though?. I change my filter when the TDS reading gets close to my tap water reading. I'd assume it's not filtering solids at that point therefore not filtering the nasties.

      I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure TDS meters do effectively detect chemicals and minerals in your water, but you can’t necessarily discern one from the other just off a reading. One absolute fact is that tap water is criminally toxic. I would recommend a reverse osmosis filter or a distiller to effectively remove toxins. If you want to buy bottled water I would recommend arrowhead; their water is chemical free and rich in essential minerals.

    Brita advises to throw away the first two jugs of filtered water if I remember correctly. Perhaps that may change the reading somewhat?

  • @MindHunger
    @MindHunger 3 года назад +9

    You can't really rinse the filter under tap water as that is incomplete.
    Best to shake, shake, shake the filter then totally immerse the filter in a glass of water. Wait for all the bubbles to settle, then take the filter out & let the water inside the filter totally drain out. Shake the filter, empty the water glass & refill and repeat twice more. This cleans out a new filter properly.

    My point being that your Brita filter test reading was largely inaccurate because it was mixed with water that had a 300+ … @4:57 You can see how much water is left inside of the container which was water reading at 347. Then @5:46 is when you add tapwater to the Britta filter which is then mixing with the water that was left over inside of the container.

    Hello, After watching this video zero water is worth to buy?

    • @ReLoadersBench
      @ReLoadersBench  2 года назад +1

      In my opinion, yes, especially choosing between Zero and Brita. The only downside of Zero is (for my water/area) is the filter lasts less than a month before the TDS number start jumping up like Brita. The Zero filters are somewhat expensive as well. But, I also have TERRIBLE city water. I have a friend a few cities over and their city water is BETTER (lower TDS) than mine without having to use a filter product like Zero or Brita. Oh well, YMMV.

    • @ReLoadersBench
      @ReLoadersBench  4 месяца назад

      Agreed. Zerowater filters are not cheap and don't last long. I looked into reverse osmosis set ups for under the sink, but those are expensive and they need filters too. So our current 2-step process is to fill the Zero container and then take that water and fill the Brita. Works for us.

    Are going to rinse your instruments in distilled water after each test? As someone else noted,
    you didn’t empty and clean the jug before adding Brita water and Brita advise to soak, not rinse your new filter and discard the first 2 jugs. TDS is total dissolved solids, so maybe you should do your homework before hitting record on the camera.

We also have a growing movement against the utility companies (gas, water, electricity) due to their fraudulent practices.

      I had to do a bit of looking into the whole TDS thing as well. The TDS (total dissolved solids) measures ppm (parts per million, in this case "solids") for water. My TDS indicated water that measures 0-50 is "cleanest". My tap @ 400 obviously has some "solids" (metals and inorganics) that I'm probably better off not ingesting. Besides, the cleaner water will be better for the espresso maker ;-)
