Nixon’s analysis on foreign policy is almost always spot on. This was over 30 years ago and it is just as relevant today as it was then.

Yes, he was correct in what could happen in Russia but he was certainly rare in holding that position. The success of a free Russia was known to be important in the 90s but we watched it fail with Putin. Nixon confused North Vietnam with North Korea twice in the end which was kinda cringeworthy. I imagine there was some discussion of that topic previous to that portion of the interview.
He was a crook and a pardoned criminal who did much more than just cover up Watergate. His secret strategy to get us out of Vietnam was a sham and his Southern Strategy was a dog-whistle campaign of racism. Don’t let them rehabilitate his image because he got a few things right.

Damn. It's been a fast 30 years
For all of his faults and flaws, Nixon had a highly intuitive grasp of foreign policy. He clearly understood how the world works and how action, or inaction, affected other nations and in the long term, affected the US. Did he have colossal failures? Yes he did. Dealing with the mess that was Vietnam immediately jumps to mind, but when it came to dealing with peer and near-peer adversaries, the man knew what he was talking about and how to handle things. A pity that such experienced people are lacking nowadays.
I’m no fan of Nixon, but he tried to make the best of a bad situation in Vietnam that had been handed to him by Lyndon Johnson. By the time Nixon got there, we had already been fully in the war for almost 2 years. Johnson got us involved by allowing the CIA to support a coup against the South Vietnamese leader who was on the verge of making peace with the North. Johnson believed that Ho Chi Minh was just attempting to get US military advisers out of the South so he could renege on the deal and invade, and mistakenly believed that this would allow Soviet influence to spread. First, Ho Chi Minh was communist, but was easily the most moderate communist around at the time, and wanted nothing to do with the USSR or China until the war started and he turned to them for assistance. Second, while Ho did take advantage of the 1973 agreement to invade in 1975, the removal of several hundred thousand US troops was a major change. The removal of a few hundred military advisers wouldn’t have changed the military situation.
As for dealing with near-peer adversaries, yes and no. He failed to spot the emerging cracks in the USSR’s foundation, and therefore made the mistake of engaging with China as a counterweight, when in fact it already was one. His visit to China began the cascade of events that has led to China being our main economic rival today. Now, as far as keeping the USSR in check, he was pretty successful there. Brezhnev was fairly scared of Nixon, and this was by design. Nixon was a champion of “Madman Theory,” i.e., make everyone think you’re crazy enough to nuke them, and you’ll get what you want. Of course, he didn’t run around making reckless and obviously hollow nuclear threats like Putin and Kim, but he did instill that fear in the Soviets more than it had been there before.
@@bluemarlin8138 Fair points but honestly, not a whole lot of people foresaw the collapse of the Soviet Union in as rapid a fashion as it did. If one can be objective about it, I think the three major catalysts were; 1), the workers union in Poland going on prolonged strike which morphed into a major push for social change. 2), the race to the moon in the late 60s/early 70s, which they could not outspend the massive US effort to get there first and the subsequent loss of prestige, especially from the other members of the Soviet Bloc. 3), trying to keep up with US spending on the military in the 80s, (the 600-ship navy and Strategic Defense Initiative aka, The Star Wars Program, comes to mind).
I could be wrong, but that's the way I see it.
As for convincing the world that you could be a little touched in the head, well, right or wrong, there are those in the world who respond to that quicker than they will just trying to be nice. If you'll permit me, let me give you a boxing analogy.
Mike Tyson was undoubtedly a highly skilled and ferocious fighter with a well founded reputation for wrecking his opponents. You cannot become the youngest heavyweight champion in history otherwise. It was to the point where other men literally feared getting into the ring with him. He already defeated them. Now it's a matter of getting the body to follow, which is the entire point. If I can convince you that I have no regard for human life, especially yours, I'd wager you'd take a very long pause and think about your next move. Oversimplification to be sure but with regards to Nixon and that lowkey reputation, I think it served its purpose.

History has who knows how many examples of that, but the one which immediately jumps to mind is PM Neville Chamberlain's dealings with Chancellor Hitler, claiming "Peace in our time," as he waved a useless piece of paper.

The US did the exact opposite of what Nixon seems to be suggesting here.
According to Nixon's opinion, it was Russia's fault for not being able to build an open and democratic system, instead they had a dictator who destabilized the world.

Russia is right now an authoritarian dictatorship, the USA is not . I have lived in Ukraine and I can tell you first hand it did not need Russian intervention to liberate it . Ukrainian's chose in 2014 to move away from the Russian sphere of influence . Dang he hit the nail on the head. Shock therapy was a disaster in Russia - and then China was like hell no we’re not doing that.
There was a very good reason for "shock therapy". The communist was a real threat even after soviet union collapsed and they could retake government.... If everything is privatized quickly the communist lose all power. It is just the capitalist response to reverse what the communists did when they forced collectivization on everyone after Russian revolution 1917 ....destroying private property.
We tried to help ease the transition with billions in aid, helping Russia write regulations to manage privatization, and allowing foreign investment. They refused everything except the money (and the nuke disassembly assistance). Since they would only let Russians acquire state assets when they privatized, the only people who had the means to acquire them were the usual suspects-officials in the military, KGB, communist party, and mafia members (which were mostly the aforementioned former officials and their hired goons). That’s how the mafia took over, and that’s what made the West leery of helping more later on.
There was no shock therapy for post Soviet Russia. It was a looting spree and violation of trust by Washington, London, and the Wall Street Mafia. The only shock was that the Evil Empire was the U.S. all along. It was never the USSR, dysfunctional as they were.

Nixon was a political genius. Like him or hate him, but this fact is undeniable. By far the most intelligent president in American history. There are few politicians in the world - let alone in America - who could speak with such profound wisdom and refreshing clarity.
Roosevelt was a political genius. Taking office when US was in great depression with gangsters owning politicians in many cities. (Chicago, New York) and by the end of his life America was the greatest power in history.
Nixon divided an already divided America. His decisions caused his demise and we remember the farewell wave as he left the stage forever. His successor Gerald Ford, presided over US defeat in S.E. Asia (no peace with honour) and America seemed broken and rudderless for almost a generation.
The Iran farce with Carter continued the malaise. Reagan changed things.

Did very well with diplomacy but not well covering up a burglary. Then again, which was the more important trait at the time. Too bad he tripped himself up.

Nixon was smart however some ideology wasn't correct, such as starting the war on drugs which actually fueled Communism and destitution, both of which America is struggling today with!

Got a little confused there when he was talking about North Vietnam instead of North Korea. His age was catching up with him. Still, the man was very intelligent and had a firm grasp on foreign policy far beyond our current leadership.
I think he was making an analogy to Vietnam, not mixing it up-he finishes the sentence by returning to Korea ("won't be a friend to Vietnam-so it won't be a friend to North Korea)

no he was correct, USSR was a key backer of the Vietnamese Communists and that was solely due to the USSR being an exporter of communism. As the new Russian state was not communist they would not be supporting a communist Vietnamese state in such as way, which the US could use to their advantage to gain an ally in South East Asia which is essentially exactly what happened. The Vietnamese are one of the bigger armed forces in the world and have strategic interests inline with the US

The BRICS Group has discussed the potential for establishing a Bretton Woods style Gold Standard Currency that they can use to conduct trade within the BRICS organization.

Vietnam does not display aggressive actions to exploit the resources of other nations,

@@danielhutchinson6604 I was discussing how Nixon's comments about USSR/Vietnam connection would dissipate in the new Russian regime and how they would instead become more strategically aligned with the US, which is true mainly because of Chinese expansionism in the area... Hence the reason Vietnam maintains one of the largest militaries in the world and spends more per capita on it's military than most other countries in the world.

Nixon was a bit optimistic here but it's true that America's foreign policy towards Russia has been a blunder pretty much since the 90s. Liberal idealist foreign policy just wasn't the right call to properly engage with a country traumatized by the fall of it's empire. This is why we need men like Nixon who actually understand how the world works back on the White House.

Incredibly accurate prediction. Nixon is mostly thought of as a Watergate conspirator but he was also very intelligent and statesmanlike. UK TV chat show host David Frost tried to make things difficult for him in an interview once. Nixon danced rings around him and l thought Frost was made to look stupid.

What he says is prescient and wise. What he did by engaging in a cover-up was proof that even wisdom can be compatmentalized with tragic consequences. From an early age I sensed that he was pedagogic and simply did not know how to let down the formality and just be comfortable in his own skin. He always seemed to be projecting that he was an intellect to the detriment of other essential qualities.
If he did that, he did it subconsciously. I don't think he was trying to prove his intelligence, but rather his worth. Both in his own eyes and in the eyes of the world.

How much misery and suffering Nixon inflicted on people in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia is a matter of record. Between him and Kissenger, the killing fields are a result of their decisions. Peace with honour involved helicopters flying off the Saigon Embassy Roof, abandoning hill tribes of Laos and Vietnam to their fate which Green Berets who worked with them express shame.
