When McNamara/Kissinger/Nixon and any other US decision maker before, I will say, 1975, wanted to do something, they would hide it under four layers of coercion, seven layers of obscurity and twenty five layers of denial. Today you have Senator Lindsey Graham stating on national television: a) "The money we spend in Ukraine is an excellent investment because Russians are dying" and b) "We will fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.".
It's refreshing to listen to a rational and straightforward leader.
Despite his failings as president, he’s much better able to talk to a reporter without a teleprompter and answer questions on his own than our last several presidents.

To listen to a POTUS who has well-considered positions on foreign affairs is to realise how much we have fallen. The one area where the POTUS is influential is foreign affairs.
Now, the US just has geriatric boomers in power and the idiot sons and daughters of nepotism sycophants. Any intellect not clouded by a "fantasy of ethnic superiority" would know China's rise to the top was eventual. China and India were the #1 economies In the World for 1800 years of the Gregorian Calender (before Western Colonialism entered China). Nixon was a president that considered American Interests first (not Israel's). Therefore, aiding Taiwan is simply a means to "control" the rise of China...it wouldn't matter if China was Republican and Taiwan was Communist. Remember, China and Taiwan is an "unresolved" Civil War between the Republican Government of Chiang Kai Shek (rightly called "cash my check" in the West) and the CPC (Communist Party of China - Mao Tse Tung). There is no disagreement between either governments regarding the geography of China. That is, Taiwan is a part of China.
He was so much more honest than today's politicians. He had flaws, but he got a raw deal compared to how corrupt they are today.
Richard Nixon actually cared about the people of America. He was willing to do whatever it took to achieve those ends, and that was ultimately his downfall. This is why everyone else in power immediately turned their back on him.

Say what you will about Watergate, this man was highly intelligent, was a true statesman and flat out knew his political science, both domestic and global. The real shame is he didnt have to engage in Watergate, he could have won without it.
He didn't even know about it. When an Aide told POTUS Nixon about the Watergate break in; he bust out Laughing; thinking it to be a Joke. Nixon DIDN'T authorize Watergate. His mistake was in trying to cover it up. And President Nixon tried to cover it up; because he was afraid of what would come out with the J.F.K. Assassination and the Bay of Pigs. In effect he basically fell on his own sword by resigning; rather than have it go to Trial.
I wasn’t alive for Nixon as President. And never had a positive attitude about his time in office. Also I never looked into him much outside Watergate. That being said, after researching him more and more. Watching some of his post Presidency videos and statements. I’m becoming quite the fan of him. He was right about so many things on so many fronts. Flawed human but who am I to judge, I am flawed as are everyone who woke up today. Makes me wonder where things would’ve gone had he not resigned and the break-in never happened. Thank you for posting all that’s been posted so far on here. I’ll be diving deeper and learning more through your content.

This could have been a knowledgable geopolitical analysis of last week, replacing only the names of the historical polities with their successor state names.
One thing that would be different would be that he would be far less confident in any hypothetical “One Country, Two Systems” solution to the Taiwan issue. After Hong Kong no one who is not totally oblivious to the situation seriously believes that it has any chance of success.

In 2010 I read his 1992 great book(twice because I couldn't believe what I read) "Sieze The Moment ". His point was after the fall of soviet union, the USA had an opportunity to , like never before, set the country forward with un ending prosperity, security, and influence! He was 95 percent right on everything. Basically, he stated brilliantly we have to be diplomatically proactive and don't drop the ball or else.....Islamic terrorist activity worldwide (9/11), rise of north Korea going nuclear, Iran gaining to much wealth and directing upheaval especially in regards to Israel (10/7/23), China and be careful of its influence over American corporations, involve and help Russia develop sustainable economic system or else a putin authoritarian type will come about because that's all the Russian people have ever known (Ukraine anybody?). Also, strengthen NATO and European economies to preserve western civilization. He was foreseeing mass migration and too much cultural liberalism. Clinton, Bush, and Obama definitely DROPPED THE BALL. Read this book people....he was so right on just about everything in this book thar came out right before the 1992 elections.

Nixon was arguably America's best foreign policy president of the 20th Century (yes, arguably even superior to FDR). No one of either party could come close to his geopolitical achievements. The Nixon administration - more so than any other single government - established the foundations for the US empire's "unipolar moment" in the 90s & 2000s, which subsequent administrations from both parties promptly squandered.

There was a Cold War going on at the time and the Soviet Union was evangelical in trying to spread Communism. The last thing the US needed in South America is a Socialist government in South America.
The Russians didn’t tolerate a pro-US satellite on their border in Ukraine either.
When a Geo political fight is taking place between two Great powers, smaller countries have to be very careful about who they align themselves with. The wrong choice can be fatal. The best stance is neutrality.
Perhaps, though in hindsight some might say that Nixon 'welcoming' China into the fold has proved a 'mixed' blessing.

I always opined that 'apart from Watergate,' Nixon was an effective and better-than-average and underrated commander in chief.
Not being a political expert myself, his opinion and comments seem to have lots of UNcommon sense and basic down-to-earth wisdom:
"Maintain a 'presence' (militarily or otherwise) in Taiwan but no so much that Peking (Beijing) is provoked.
Keep great relationships with Peking. First and foremost this is the key to prevent China from invading Taiwan. If China is provoked (due to bad relationships with them) or China becomes too influenced by Russia.....China will likely invade.......and there's nothing we can do about it."
It's a delicate situation, according to Nixon, pure and simple and needs to stay that way. Makes sense.
Nixon has taken blame for the current situation of China's economic and military ascendence for opening relations with Peking (Beijing). He was facilitating the Sino-Soviet schism and leveraging American interests in Asia. The fact that subsequent administrations dropped the ball and caved to corporate interests came later.
It actually in all likelihood contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union by breaking their alliance. It was a genius move, what happened after 1992, is Clinton's "fault" for the agreement of 2000. (Which I personally think was a great thing..... )

Makes no sense to blame him, since China became an economic juggernaut due to internal reforms. It would have been much worse to the US now if it had maintained a distant and even rival relationship with China.
Countries thrive when they compete, the Soviet Union was our main competitor until the 90s. Now we have no competition, the hard labor and manufacturing comes from China, and the ideas and the tech comes from America. We work together hand in hand with China. If we never opened relations with them, I think both of our countries would be better off now due to them becoming our main competition replacing the USSR after 1991. Perhaps even the communist party would have lost power in the 90s like almost all the rest, as enabling them to enrich themselves and thrive by opening relations with us, removed there terrible quality of life therefore preventing them from living in the conditions that would have led to the overthrow of there system. That was a great scene. That movie made a very big impression on me. President Nixon was a Quaker. I love that faith. In the film Dr. Kissinger knelt and prayed with him. The problem was US didn't provide the weapon that equates to the level of the threat, otherwise Taiwan would have Aegis equipped destroyers, even F-15 since the 2000s.
The United States has not recognized the existence of Taiwan since the Shanghai Communique in 1972, and the person who signed the Shanghai Communique happened to be Nixon.
Those are still massively expensive weapon systems . Do we give those or they buy it?

@@ggg-wt7jw That's not the point. Taiwan Relation Act of 1979, a US domestic law, requires US to sell Taiwan the weapon it deem necessary for its defense against China. Nixon said it as much in the clip. But US government from Ford to Clinton basically don't sell what Taiwan needs because they fear damaging US ties with China.
