I'm 57 years old. I've seen every 70s band on the wall behind you (and many, many more). Wolf Alice is my favorite. They seem so simple, but are very complex. They do everything from hard rock to punk to love songs to ballads. Pink Floyd, The Stones, Jethro Tull...great shows but it was more about the show than the music. Wolf Alice is back to the roots. I saw them last November and I have tickets for this coming October (bringing my daughter).

Right on Man! I'm 64. I've seen Wolf Alice 4 times. First time in Austin in 2018 April as they didn't have a Denver Date on their Calendar. Then in Nov. 2021 they played the Bluebird in Denver (Small venue, maybe 750-1000 people), they had to add a second night as the first one sold out. Then, in June 2022 they opened for "The Bleachers" at Red Rocks. Got their late because the times listed were inaccurate. So I missed the first song, but heard it as we were slogging up from the parking lot. Then finally I saw them at the Ogden Theater in downtown Denver on October 10th, with another old friend from H.S. Days. He ran for earplugs at the bar as soon as the opening band started. I haven't seen any other act 4 times. I saw Elton John 3 times. Frank Zappa twice. Roy Buchanan twice, & that's about it. I've seen lots of other bands or artists at least once, but Wolf Alice speaks to me somehow even in my old age and reminds me of my youth. I've seen the Stones, the Grateful Dead, Peter Gabriel, Blue Oyster Cult, Steve Miller Band, .... just to name a few... I'm not trying to brag, just stating what was available back in the day. Most of these tickets cost less than 30 bucks back in the day. My first Elton John ticket cost 8.50$ back in 1975. Those were the daze.

The song is about a man/person that is so caught up in himself, that he disregards, disrespects, and completely misses everything around him……..including the person/people that care for him. It fits in to the theme of the album. On a related note, this band puts on incredible live performances. Their live sound is just as good, if not better than studio versions. Such a great band. Ellie is incredible. Oddly enough, the bass is prevalent in 99% of their music. They like it to hit hard. And it sounds great. No auto tune. Her voice gets better and better every album. Every person in this band is no greater than the other. It’s a perfect band…imo.

After hearing them again and paying closer attention, I was a little surprised that I don't hear more about them than I do. They're really a great sounding band. I'm not getting many views on this, but I may be reacting to another because I really like this band.

@@ModernLifeForThe70sMind Incredibly popular in Europe. I’ve followed a couple incredible bands that don’t get much play in the States. I don’t get it. However, they DO fill up the seats when they are in the U.S. And they are still young. Good things to come. They are a strong, strong band. Last Man on Earth has made its Late Night show circuits. Won’t be long.

I was in London a couple of years ago and on a Beatles guided walk (brilliant by the way). I got talking to an American guy and his daughter . Like me they had just seen WA live. The Father said he thought Ellie's voice was poor live.
I was staggered . I thought she was excellent live, and the daughter agreed with me. By the way I am 69 years old and rate WA as a great modern rock band. Some of their music reminds me of bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Best new(er) band to come along in awhile. They’ve been around for a bit, but people are finally starting to realize the talent. Check out their earlier stuff. It’s just as good.

They are the dogs bits, the best we have in the UK. You can't put them in a genre, they are themselves.
Go see em live, you won't be disappointed

Watching this a second time. I didn’t catch the “Beatles-esque” comment last time. It really is, isn’t it? Great comparison.

@@ModernLifeForThe70sMind , They are excellent live. These acoustic sets (which are excellent) don't convey their live venue performances. They are all electric and quite loud, but awesome all the same. I've also seen them twice. Most recently in Denver this last November. They are opening for "The Bleachers" at Red Rocks in June and I've got tickets in the 7th row!

First time viewer. I enjoyed your breakdown of the song. Glad to hear others chime in about what the song is about. Like you, I'm not a lyrics person. I just started listening to WA at the end of 2021, when their album Blue Weekend received high scores in year-end polls. I recommend anything from the 2021 Pool sessions (in studio versions of songs from B.W.). Sweet Ellie is not always sweet (check out the Yuk Foo video for instance or her incredible version of Formidable Cool at Best Kept Secret - 2018).

Yeah, their harder rocking, almost punk songs are almost like a different band, even the vocalist’s vocal style is completely different. I love when a band can do multiple things well, but seriously, “The Last Man on Earth” is probably one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

I’d be interested in your reaction to Lipstick on the Glass and Delicious Things. Both of those songs are beautifully complex in all aspects. It’s a beautiful album.

During this contemplative and atmospheric track, Ellie Rowsell contemplates humanity's self-importance.
You were the first person here
And the last man on the Earth
But does a light shine on you?
The singer/guitarist explained to Apple Music that she was grappling with the idea of arrogance: "On one hand, it's about my own inner turmoil with my own ego, and on a broader term, the ego of everyone," she said. "They were the things that were rolling around in my head at the time."

  • @hughwalker5628

She's singing to and about a narcissist but I think you're right, it may actually be to a wider audience.
