Dokken - Breaking The Chains (Official Music Video)

- Watch the official music video for "Breaking The Chains" by Dokken.
The song appears on the band's debut album of the same name and was released as a single in 1983 through Elektra Records, being the band's first American single. The song peaked at #32 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and stayed on the chart for 13 weeks.
The video begins cutting between the band performing the song in a house and performing on a black stage. The band is later chained up in a dungeon before George Lynch breaks free and performs the song's solo. As Lynch performs the solo the other band members break free one by one. After the solo, Don Dokken wakes up chained to a bed, alone, before breaking free. The video ends with shots of the band performing in the house, in the dungeon, and against a backdrop of chains that explode as the video ends.

I'm 56, in August of 2024. So many great times, memories, and so much great music!
53 yo here there has not been anything that comes close to the 80s music The decadence the cheesiness the just debauchery of the entire decade I would not change anything from the '80s now as a musician myself I'm grateful for the '80s because it influenced me in so many different ways from hard rock bands like dokken to thrash metal like Slayer
This is a seriously underrated 80’s band.
yup
Yep
Not at all. These guys sold 10 million copies and George Lynch is one of the most respected hard rock/metal guitarists.
lol underrated they have sold over 30 million albums worldwide one of the best and known my childhood bands
@@robertoricci3393nahhhh listen here pal, im 13 and asked EVERYONE i know if they know what dokken is and they said no, i showed them some song and only a few said “i think ive heard it before” UNDERRATED AF
True story:
I'm 26 years old- I wear a black bomber jacket to work. My boss is around 60. So, I play old music on a speaker. No joke:
*Breaking the Chains blares as I'm closing*
"That Dokken? Damn, I haven't heard them in years- _years!_ How old are you? Goddamn, since before you were born!"
Happy to make an old metal fan happy for at least a moment.
dokken is not old is a classic... classic's never get old
This is my ringtone 😎
fuck YEAH,, Good job young man, KEEP ROCKING!!!
I met one of my mates at his record store buying an obscure album and he was surprised I knew of them.
And at my job with customers they LOVE that a young guy is genuinely into older rock and metal bands not just the same ol classic bands everyone brings up.
killerness
In 1987 when I was in the Army. I got to lead a cadence in our morning run and I did it to the lyrics of this song. One of the greatest moments ever. I love this band!!!!
That had to have sounded incredible.
You're a legend my man ✊💪💪💪
As a retired drill sergeant and gen-x Dokken fanatic, I have to give that an official “Out-F**king-Standing!”
I bet it was got this letter 🤣
But it must have been the last verse. It's the strongest one lyrically. I got to be free! 😎
Dokken seriously belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Yeah they do!!
I totally agree . It’s too bad the RRHOF spoofs on this great music but vote ABBA in , go figure .
Not a 1 hit wonder!!! So talented!!

I started to “listen” Dokken in 2008, when I was 10 because I bought gta vice city stories and I had fallen in love with them after a listening. Now I am 20 and Dokken is my favorite band... I have all vinyls from 80s
Painted Skies you have all their “records” which are made of vinyl.
@@bltvd ooh yes. And 2 CD, Erase the Slate and Lightening Strikes Again.
Painted Skies right on!! I got into them when I played that game as well!! That’s badass!
haha yep was 12 in 2008, still smashing dokken. I also have Vice City to thank for my 80s obsession.
I started listening like 2 years ago when I was 12 and they’ve been my favorite ever since. In my opinion they are underrated and was surprised when I found out that they weren’t all that big and widely know like AC/DC or Def leopard.
They had their own sound... heavy with sweet vocals.
I was born in 1986. It's now 2017. I'm 31 and I think 80's rock kicked ass back then and still kicks ass today and always will. Rock on my brothers.
Papa Pooch amen well said the 80s were the best. I was a teen in the 80s.the best
85 here brother
Born in 1960, I found my way here.....such is life.
you missed out...I used to go to a beer bar with dancers and they played lots of heavy metal. it was great, I often stayed 8 hrs.
I was born in '89 and I feel the exact same. Hate today's music.
Whos still Rockken with Dokken at the end of Corona year 2020??

Rockken with Dokken today 1/21/21 since 1983
Rocking to them in 2021 as an 18 year old!🤘🏼
A few days ago I got Tooth 'N Nail & Under Lock & Key original pressings in vinyl!
Count Me In. I'll be rocking to DOKKIN UNTIL MY DYING DAY!!! THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BANDS OF THE EIGHTIES!!!
For yeeeeears lo g b4 most hairbands embrace them lynch in top five love it ALL every one but not better metal band than Pantera no bigger TRAGEDY......
Dokken rhymes with ROCKING. !!!!
Dokken rock, George Lynch is criminally underrated
No, he wasn't. He was all over the rock/metal radar back then. Lynch was never underrated.
Told my boss I was gonna take the day off to break the chains around me, he said he’d be dokken my pay
😜😂😂
Ha!
Clever 😉😉😉
good one. :)
😆😆😆
One of the best 80's metal bands. I still rock out on Dokken on a regular basis their songs never get old.
"Breaking the chains around you
Nobody else can bind you
Take a good look around you
Now you're breaking the chains."
Rock on !!
Dokken is true metal. One of the greatest bands ever.
extreme talent
Classic Metal, no doubt
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sem dúvidas!
Lynch's guitar is a killing machine!
Is that an Icon reference? That's a pretty good song.
@@Laidengizer011 No, it's a mere reference to George Lynch.
@@jmorlar2852 I'm sorry, killer machine is the song I was thinking of. Look it up. It's badass.
Best decade for Metal/Rock music, nobody can beat this! 🤘
Hands down ! 🤘
MTV Headbangers Ball. I loved their videos!
...until groups like Dokken, KISS, Motley Crue, Warrant, and even Stryper, started doing those stupid, insipid, sugary "Ballads"... which, of course, is what killed the Pop-Metal movement in the Early 1990s. It just got sappy out there, especially when the group Extreme did that acoustic Ballad, called "More than words". In less than a year after that, a lot of the Pop-Metal groups were nothing more than an afterthought. Then, it was onto Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Ministry, Rage Against The Machine, and other groups that were "Alternative".
Agreed, today’s music is for homos
Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!
I remember popping this tape into my cassette player in my car and speeding down the road with my windows down. I miss the 80s 😪
I remember they got booed off stage because they had to follow Metallica.
They headlined over Metallica and the crowd couldn’t go this light after Metallica shredded the stage just before them. They were an incredibly a weak act to follow a monster like Metallica. Back in the day this type of music was not in the category of hardcore metal.
I came back to the video to see how the music has aged and I have to say that it is still a little cheesy. We all have our taste in music. Respect for the artists and the fans, it’s just not for me.
I do the same in my car, except playing a CD.
Me too! But while smoking on a fatty
Still do...
In a 5.0 Mustang or IROC Z 👍👍👍
I'm 40 years old and grew up listening to dokken. My father loved them. Great band man. ✌️
Gotta love 80s music.
Masterpiece of masterpieces. Real classic.
A lot of people from this generation may never appreciate classics like this from the 80's. Back when practical effects and sets were king, and not all CGI bs like they are today. Not to mention the song rocks my socks. This and Dream Warriors will forever remain favorites. \m/\m/
I was in my early 20's when this was new. Hard rock was the thing for me then ... Dokken being a favorite... I still in my late 50's love this, them and hard rock in general. I feel bad for Don with his vocal cord issues. They were in their prime in this video. Good times
New Dokken album is amazing
Totally friggin intense, instantly relatable, lyrically and vocally and instrumentally mesmerizing, like friggin awesome, I saw Dokken, summer of 87, open air stadium daytime sunshine and totally stoned.
Great song
My favorite Dokken song.
@@IloveJimiHendrix2009 mine too 😎
@@IloveJimiHendrix2009 Dream Warriors for me, but this one is up there.
Mine too their new one is pretty good as well@@IloveJimiHendrix2009
This song is awesome! This video is something else. I just realized Don Dokken's robe in the bed scenes is just a karate gee with no pants. Very cool he achieved black belt status.
LOL I love how Lynch's solo is so powerful it breaks the chains of the captive bandmates
I so love this group since Don Dokken first formed 1979. I will never get tired of listening to this band.
Dokken takes you back...Motley Crew, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Cinderella to name a few others
Some of the best riffs of 80s glam metal. What a great band is Dokken
This is bringing back childhood memories of my older brother blasting Dokken while I was reading comic books. Those were the days. Awesome song, awesome band.
one of the best metal bands....so underrated....
1981 - and still one of the best rock anthems.
One of the greatest pop metal songs ever!!!
One of the best bands ever nostalgia at it's finest
Memories when playing GTA vice city stories. This song is on their radio in every vehicle... Legend from the 80s
Long time DOKKEN fan. Thank You MR Melcher for turning me onto them...
Rockin with Dokken since the 80’s and love that they still do live shows🤘🏻 wishing them all health and happiness for many more years!!!!!
With George Lynch's shredding guitar and Don's melodic vocals Dokken was always a fav back then and now.
I'm only 23 I was born in 1995 but this music is like oxygen to me :) I luv it

Here, here! (raises can of beer*)
HECK YEAH
Agreed
Man im 18 rn and i would kill to see this band live in 1980, i wish i was born sooner
This video is so 80's, its almost like it was for a modern movie, portraying a 80's video for a scene in the movie....what I'm trying to say is this video is as 80's as 80's could possibly be...BIG TIME!!!
Bob Silver it’s as 80’s as the 80’s were when I was in high school in the 80’s.
I love that octave riff George is doing @ 0:10 and 1:05
How did George get so good on guitar in his youth to be such a beast by the time Dokken was making albums? It wasn't like there were YT guitar instructional videos or Hal Leonard books everywhere back then. He's such a great player-if he was that good of a player when this came out I can only imagine what his private combo amp jam sessions sound like today-Ph.D clinic in shredding.
Can only imagine freestyle jamming with the dude and copious amounts of xtc
I still enjoy their golden songs on walkman on my way to office.
Damn they was strong. They broke them chains like nothin.
On Mr. Scary was able to set them free, lol
Broke them? Hell, they shattered them, pulverized them, and burned them!!
LMFAOOOOOOO
The solo was coming man those chains stood no chance
George lynch is trying not to laugh throughout the whole video. Look at him, he must have thought the director was joking when he made this video.
Or cringe
There is something about it :)

It's like 1983. What did you expect? 😜🤘🏻

michelle stalter yea mom
michelle stalter the 80s music was auseom!!!!!!! dokken was a great band!!!!!!
i'll take cheesy videos with catchy hooks, screaming guitars and singable lyrics over the gloomy dark shit metal morphed into. Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.
One of the most talented bands and one of the most underrated.
Great song.. Simplicity at its best.
I miss 80's metal. I've probably seen Dokken 10-15 times back in the day. They would open for everyone..
Great band!!!
I am so glad I grew up in the era when this FIRST came out. When hardly anyone knew who Dokken was. When I got this and Tooth and Nail on cassette through Columbia Records and Tapes (I'm pretty sure I still owe them money LOL) way, way back. Saw them on a club tour when they were relatively unknown outside L.A. This is CLASSIC 80's metal at it's best!!
Excellent band from our teen years, time has to roll on and we will grow older, but the magic remains.

I got to chat with george at jeff and ravinder’s wedding. I was hired by ravinder to shoot and edit it. We talked about his home-made studio that was highlighted in a magazine. Not scary at all. The photographer took a photo of us at a table. I’ve seen a ton of celebrities in SoCal but this was a pinnacle moment. Thx George for hangin out with me.
Fantastic VOCALS and Georges GUITAR and Song writing ! so underrated

I love Dokken. My favorite part here is George going all like, unchain me solo I can solo up in here.
Dokken kicked ass in the 80s, Back for the Attack had 13 amazing tracks. All great, no filler. Don't see that often.
3:32 "now I'm breakin' the chains"...
I love the vocal hook on that one.

2:56 Is he a pantsless karate master? The 80s were so awesome!
And he shaved his legs too- damn funny stuff there.

He must have a chain breaking technique.
Saw Doken down in New Orleans when they were making a video. We waited all night for them to come out. The drummer signed dollar bill I took a picture of blew it up and I still have it on my wall for this day.
When the solo is so badass that you literally break the chains and free your bound band mates . . .
That’s the best part!
I remember this on mtv when i was like 13 years old, lol. The only reason i ever kept listening to this band to some extent for a few years after this was entirely because of George Lynch, his guitar solos were always sick.
