  • Twisting and turning atop the muddy ooze, the acorn worm (class Enteropneusta) is an unassuming worm-like animal that has a surprising connection to Earth’s climate. Named for their acorn-shaped front end, enteropneusts are actually more closely related to humans than to worms. They have a rudimentary nerve cord that is similar to ours, and they breathe oxygen using structures similar to a fish's gills.
    A constant rain of particles connects the ocean's surface to deep-sea communities far below. Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere mixes into the ocean at the surface. Tiny plant-like plankton transform carbon dioxide into organic material and are then eaten by larger animals. As these animals eat, poop, and die, they create a flurry of organic material known as marine snow. The sinking snow moves nutrients and carbon all the way down to the deep seafloor, where bottom-dwelling animals, like acorn worms, enjoy a bountiful feast. This cycle is known as the biological pump.
    Acorn worms are connected to us through the carbon cycle. They play a significant role in the redistribution of sediment and nutrients in deep-sea communities. As they do their part to help regulate climate, we can do our part by drastically reducing our carbon dioxide emissions. The ocean is a powerful ally that has buffered us from the impacts of climate change-now it is our turn to act on climate change to safeguard the future of the ocean and its inhabitants.

    Huzzah for detritivores! I hope I spelled that correctly.
    I'm curious as to the last half/third of these animals - Comparing the different clips of them in different stages, I am guessing the intestines or colons of these acorn worms are transparent and the sand-coloured structures inside their bodies are actually just the sand itself as it works through their gut?

    🤔 Would they be considered an aquatic "indicator species"? Similar to terrestrial frogs, owls, mayflies, etc?

    • @MBARIvideo
      @MBARIvideo  5 месяцев назад +7

      Yes, many deep-sea animals are indicator species and it is critical for us to understand how these communities are impacted by our changing ocean.

      Climate refers to the general weather conditions in an area, so weather, not climate, should be changing. Unfortunately, climate change is real. Global temperatures continue to reach new records as a result of human-produced greenhouse gases, which has had devastating and destructive effects on climate.

    What are you telling us to reduce carbon dioxide? Why isn’t this video in one of the languages of China or India? We’ve reduced our emissions while they are increasing theirs. It’s not a warm environment that’s killing people, it’s the cold when people can’t afford to heat their homes. Damn cultists.

      You all have a part to play, and just because the video isn't available in other languages, doesn't mean they're pointing the blame at you, if you want to find them to have other channels and redub their videos into other languages, something they can't do for free, you go right ahead, otherwise keep your mouth shut and read a book.

      Compare Population (2024 World meter) & energy use (consumption) per capita (2021-wiki)
      India population: 1,428 Mil. -- 7,143 kWh/person
      China population: 1,425 Mil -- 31,051 kWh/person
      USA population: 340 Mil. -- 78,754 kWh/person
      And the USA should be proud for reducing carbon emissions by less than 2%? The UK consumption is on par with China. Perhaps if we were paying anywhere close to what the UK pays for petrol(gas) then maybe, just maybe we could make a dent in our consumption which quite apparently is bigger than our waste lines.
