Well, Christmas holidays are coming up, guess I've found a way to invest some time here... Thanks mate!

    I've been practising similar exercises and my alternate picking technique and speed has improved a lot over the past few months but there is still one major issue I have with specific descending licks. (the one in Pantera's Revolution is my Name for example - around minute 3:34) and I have no idea how to fix it or what I'm doing wrong. I'm hitting all the notes but there is a lot of unwanted noise from the other strings which makes it sound very messy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    my arthritis is killing me,,,,but I'm not tapping out...even if it takes me months to finally be able to play this up to speed and not miss notes...only up to the 3rd phase...haven't even played all 3 together at 75% using youtube speed adjust...treating each phase as completely separate mini songs until I get them to where it is like muscle memory to play each...this is the only one I've found that isn"t straight up overwhelming as far as chord change difficulty and the arpeggio patterns are concerned, except for that last triplet pattern in phase 2...I'm wanting to simplify it to make it like in a repeating 6, like 12 14 16 16 14 12 12 14 16 16 14 12, but I'm not going to, even though it goes against what my 62 year old brain wants to lean to...old dog, new trick...ugh...back to work...thanks for the video, you evil British person, you...or maybe you're a good British cherub in disguise, haha ! as a self taught guitarist to be its totally crazy that alternate picking seems to be such a big topic.
    I really dont consider myself a good guitar player. I dont know many scales(i'm only very very quick with blues scale)..I cant really come up with solos that sound very varried or interesting...and i've been playing since I was 15 (32 now) but only in the last few years I hear ALTERNATE PICKING. never looking too much into it thinking its some kind of weird crazy guitar technique...
    so apparently i've been able to do alternate picking pretty much since I was 16 or 17. always played metal ( was a huge fan of thrash) so I guess thats kinda what forced me to have to play that way.
    thanks for making me feel a bit better about myself 😆. i'm not completely terrible after all these years

    • @enjoikeenan
      @enjoikeenan 6 месяцев назад

      I've been playing self taught for a while too. Alternate picking is not just picking up and down dude. These exercises are meant to build hand synchronization. If you don't play with a metronome and do exercises like these every day you don't have it. Alternate picking is hard af to do correctly

    • @cyborgchimpy
      @cyborgchimpy 6 месяцев назад

      @@enjoikeenan "If you don't play with a metronome and do exercises like these every day you don't have it."
      I'm sorry but that is ridiculous lmao. I did play obsessively much as a kid but I really do not need to exercise with a metronome EVERY DAY to be able to alternate pick.
      jump in the fire by Metallica? not alternate picking? I have been able to play that (albeit back then not SUPER CLEAN) since I was about 17 years old. I still play it from time to time because I think it's massively fun.
      like I stated above, I dont think I am such a great guitar player since I dont know THAT many techniques, but this one I am pretty sure of.

    • @enjoikeenan
      @enjoikeenan 6 месяцев назад

      @@cyborgchimpy Quote the metronome and and completely disregard the part about hand synchronization. Oh wait that's right, you don't know what that is. I used to be just like you when I started playing. Thinking there was nothing better or harder than Metallica. Then I grew up. I've never played jump in the fire but I know it would take me all of 2 seconds to be able to figure out the simple chug rhythms to Lars brain dead beat. The fact of the matter is, Metallica is pretty simple, straightforward music. There's a reason we all started out playing it.

      the chorus isn't CHUG CHUG, its a part of the blue scale up n down...alternate picking..
      you probably need to be able to sync your 2 hands together for that! but I guess that's not *hand synchronisation* right?
      bro. please you are starting to embarrass yourself. I really did not expect you to come back and answer after being proven categorically wrong. but here you are doubling down on how verifiably wrong you are.
      "I used to be like you when I started playing" like damn..dude you have no clue who I am or what I can actually do but you are THIS smug. no one said Metallica is HARD to play. that's just your weird ego problems inserting things I never said, claimed or insinuated. weirdo.

      I didn't disregard sh*t. you just can't read between the lines. I said you dont need a metronome or practice everyday to be able to alternate pick. yes that includes the hand synchronisation.
      you are a hack and a liar. you haven't listened to jump in the fire. the chorus is not chugging, it is a part of the blues scale up and down. some people downpick, most people (including the original writer) alternate pick this. I guess you'd need to be able to *synchronise your hands* to be able to play this at speed right? right?..
      you are also a smug narcisist with your "I used to be like you when I started playing". you have no clue who I am or what I can do lmao.
      no one said Metallica was hard to play or that the song I referred to was hard to play. the *fact* is that this is alternate picking. your weird ego problems just had to insert something I never said into the conversation so you could start talking about how great you think you are. it is almost cartoony.
      maybe..just maybe...hear me out...
      maybe..I'm good at some things you aren't good at...and maybe..it is possible..that I might have some things I'm not good at which you are good at..you know..like normal human beings?

    I've been told 2 different things to build speed, one is to practice at a speed in which I can play everything perfectly and to do millions of repetitions, and the 2nd way is to practice above my level even though I can't play perfectly and I will make mistakes, so I'm confused, one school of thought says that slow practice doesn't work and that you have to push beyond that level, the other school of thought is only practicing at a speed I can do perfectly, perfect repetitions, so which way is the right way ? Thank you

    • @ItzBotz
      @ItzBotz 5 месяцев назад

      The two are correct, just use what you like best or works best. But I think they both work well. To play "O.D" by Polyphia, I started using the first method, and it worked well, I increased 1 bpm with each perfect repeat, starting at 30, i could start on a faster bpm, but you'd better memorize the sequence well, for that I recommend the first method. Once you memorize the sequence, the second method is more viable, at least for me, as it is faster. Just use what you think is best for you, after all, everyone is different.

    I have been practicing, practicing, practicing. I've become incredibly good at speed picking, but I just cannot figure this one part out. No matter how much I practice, and no matter how good I get, a monocle and top hat just will not magically appear on me 🙁

      get obsessed with Trash metal 😆. I never "realized" that alternate picking was such a big deal because when I started playing guitar I was a complete thrash metal head and its the songs I wanted to absolutely learn.
      if you wanna go crazy and ignite your wrists as training try "jump in the fire" by Metallica.
