Yes, Eddie is his name. For a period of the history in the series, Zato himself is ACTUALLY dead, this was due to his VA dying. But he stuck around, with Eddie possessing his body. During that time, the character was called "Eddie" rather than "Zato". Since Xrd, when Zato and Eddie were brought back to life, they've gotten along much better, with Zato taking the reigns once more. He and Eddie now work more like partners, rather than master and servant. One of the big noticeable things from the animation is that Eddie is extremely expressive, unlike Zato, who lost his emotions once he was resurrected. It's one of my favorite theories that, as Zato cannot properly emote anymore, Eddie does the extra emotion to make up for him.
Strive was such a 180 turn from the rest of GG lore. Everything ended up with a happy ending. Which makes no sense considering his bleak GG was before.
My guy. The theme of the game is IN THE NAME. Strive. To seek out and claim something. For some, it's something profound, like self-forgiveness, peace, ease-of-mind after a life bound for vengeance. For others, it's simple, just wanting to be happy, to live a normal life, to sail away from their troubled past. Guilty Gear isn't grim dark. It's got bleak factors, but there's still good to be had. Because no matter what happens, the characters pull through. They have faith, that things can be better. And they *strive* for what they believe in. It is what they fight for. Even though they've had so many pains from the past, at least they can still have hope, to see a better day. If that isn't a good message, I don't know what is.
Zato can be played at an extremely high level, the problem is that the skill threshold required to use him effectively is also very high; you REALLY need an advanced understanding of all his mechanics to play him properly. Very much like Yoshimitsu in Tekken.
I watched a vid explaining ggst lore. And when they got to Zato, oh boy. Like just hearing that he was some mid tier assassin and then used 1 spell. Got his shit rocked by Eddie and now is just Eddie’s bitch. Zato ruined Eddie’s life years ago and is just seeing how much more he can. Zato dies, comes back as basically a husk, remembers nothing, and is confused why some pretty blonde lady seems so weird around him and why Eddie doesn’t like her. The lore is so confusing, but if you learn it then you’ll see that pretty much every single character has such a good story.
