  • In this video, we try out some patched round balls through the Pedersoli Baker Cavalry Shotgun.
    I'll be using some .600" cast lead balls, a .020" patch, and 60 grains of Goex 2F blackpowder.

    I really like the gun, and think it would be fun but, the $1500 price tag kill it for me. If it was around 6 to 7 hundred I'd probably buy one.

      I bought this one used. The price tag was a lot closer to $700 than $1500!

    I received a reply back from pedersoli: Thank you for the inquiry.
    The recommendation for using steel shot with chrome lined barrels is to put the steel shot into a plastic wad, we recommend it for our side by side ML shotguns.
    I assume it is also valid for the shorter barrels of the Baker double barrels.
    I would increase of a little bit the powder load of the lead shot;
    1 oz # 7 shot with 25 grs. (increase up to 28 grains)of fffg.
    and where permitted .614” round ball and .010” patch with 28 grs. of fffg.
    Best regards,
    Customer service
    So, these barrels are chrome lined? And they do recommend FFFG powder (pistol pyrodex) over FFG (rifle pyrodex)?

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  5 месяцев назад +1

      That is very confusing. The barrels on mine are certainly not chrome-lined. Mine is an older one, though, so maybe the newer ones ARE chrome-lined - I just don't know.
      The use of a modern shot cup in these will work - I've read of many people doing just that.
      I've never tried it ,myself, but I suppose using 3F will work. Modern shotgun shells are loaded with faster burning pistol powders, so I don't see why they wouldn't work here as well (especially in the short barreled Baker). Probably will not get as high a velocity using 3F as you would using a heavier charge of 2F.

    That's pretty darn good. I'm assuming your talking pedersoli's .600 rb mold. For my. 63 cal flintlock rifle I now have a. 615, and .620 mold for it. My biggest concern is how well the two barrels are regulated with each other. Yours shows a lot of hope.

      I don't have a mold for this, yet. I wanted to try it out first before I bought a mold. I'm using some cast balls that I bought from Track of the Wolf. Now that I know that it seems to work pretty well, I think I'll try to find a decent mold for it.
      I was surprised that it was so well regulated at 20 yards. Next time I'll try it at 30 and 40 yards and see what happens.

    What percussion caps do you use? Or are they musket caps? The nipples are bigger then that of the black powder revolvers.

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  3 месяца назад

      The nipples are longer in length than they are on revolvers, but still the same diameter. I'm using CCI #11 caps on this.

    In your video you say you're using goex black powder, but in your description, you say pyrodex 2f. Could you confirm which? If you're using goex, what do you recommend as a load for 2f pyrodex?

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you for pointing that out - I made a mistake when I wrote that description. I am using Goex 2F powder in this. If you have Pyrodex, you can start with the same load, about 60 grains, and it should work fine.

    I heard that pedersoli 12ga coach gun also has 1 trigger for both hammers, and because of that trigger pull is abysmal(as in, super heavy).
    What does the trigger pull feel on this one, when both hammers are cocked?

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  10 месяцев назад +2

      The trigger really isn't all that bad. I don't have a trigger pull gauge, but if I had to guess I'd say it is in the range of 7 pounds or so.

    I've got a pedersoli 10ga shotgun with improved and cylinder bores. I wonder how it would shoot a patched round ball? I wonder what size of round ball I would need? Hmmm. Things to think about.

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  10 месяцев назад +2

      Probably could out of the cylinder bore. A .750 ball with a .020 patch should work.

      @@johnzx6r that would be cool. My brother has a 75 cal round ball rifle. The next time we have our guns out I may try one of his round balls to see what size patch I would need. I don't know what size his round balls are so I will need to experiment.

    Are you able to use steel birdshot out of this?

    • @johnzx6r
      @johnzx6r  5 месяцев назад

      I haven't been able to find anything that says not to use it, but since these bores aren't chrome lined or anything, I think that using a lot of steel shot through it might scratch the bores after a while.

    • @joshhiggins7053
      @joshhiggins7053 5 месяцев назад

      @@johnzx6r OK, no problem... yeah I couldn't either. Is there anything else beside lead I could shoot for birdshot that is safe for the barrel? Like bismuth or something?
