    Part of the problem is scouting reports from the time a prospect is 15-16 years old typically “lock” the prospect into a potential role, as superstar, role player, starter, relief pitcher, etc. and the systems rarely deviate from those early reports regarding their “plans” for the prospect as they move through the farm systems, regardless of how they develop physically or from a skill set perspective. That is one big reason why struggling young players often break out after being traded to a new team - the new team takes a fresh look and doesn’t look back at what those early scouting reports said.

    I know it's not the point of the video but I can't imagine the Expos ever getting back fair value for Pedro or Randy. They were always cashstrapped (to my knowledge) and the teams trading with them knew they were desperate to get something before the stars left town.

    • @AceManning18
      @AceManning18 25 дней назад +1

      Yeah they were never going to get equal value in return. The more egregious in my opinion are the trades that got rid of guys like Brandon Phillips, Sizemore, Cliff Lee, etc

    For extra context on the Marlins, Isan Diaz, Jordan Yamamoto, and Monte Harrison DID reach the majors for the Marlins, though.
    ...only to put up below replacement-level value.
    Isan Diaz was a free out, either at the plate, or on the basepaths, and constantly gave up freebies when he was fielding. Yamamoto was promising in the first 3 starts, then the league figured him out, and he never adjusted. And Monte Harrison could never lay off breaking balls off the plate and was apparently a clubhouse cancer, if his fight with Starling Marte was anything to go off of.
    Overall, that trade is notable for producing 4 players, none of whom had fWAR that exceeded -0.1. Derek Jeter masterclass.

    Interesting about that Yordan Fields trade is the Astros have so far won 2 rings off of it. As in that ws series game he got shelled it happened to be extras which his team would match the 2 runs with a pair of runs themselves but in the 11th would lose the game. Meaning if Josh Fields didn't come out there the Dodgers win in 6 and that is how you get 2 rings as the other was 2022. Now if you track Fields before he made it to the majors he did move around as he used to be in the Seattle system before he was traded to Boston along with Erik Bedard (as the Mariners were trying to get rid of him so they needed to sweeten the deal). The Red Soxs then left Fields unprotected to be picked up in the Rule 5 Draft by Houston.

    I know all three of these players made the majors, but I think the face of the Diamondbacks, Paul Goldschmidt getting traded to Arizona for Carson Kelly, Luke Weaver and Andrew Young. So basically, Cardinals got 2 faces of other teams, while giving up a backup catcher, a couple of mediocre pitchers, an couple of backup infielders and 3 minor leaguers.

      @RealBlueony 24 дня назад

      @@lunarumbreon7699 I'd say their peaks are similar, but Wilson probably did fall off a bit harder, and all at once. Still, going from a 7-WAR player to a 2.5 or even lower WAR player the last 2 years is quite the dropoff.

    • @lunarumbreon7699
      @lunarumbreon7699 24 дня назад

      @@lunarumbreon7699 Arenado had a year like Wilson's second in Denver last year, but this year has been an unmitigated disaster. 0.9 BWAR thus far this year, and while he has a slightly better 1.5 FWAR, his offense is still horrific.
