I am stunned that Strasburg is being compared to Upton in terms of grade. Sure they have similar WAR, but as you said Stras drove the Nats to a title. While he underperformed his expectations, he was as good as you can expect from a 1st overall pick

I’m right there with you. Strasburg was an incredible player in short spurts. Upton was just a good player for a long time.

While Stephen Strasburg had quite a lot more hype and year-in year-out buzz, Justin Upton had expectations so high that he debuted at 19. Both had most of their major injuries after setting a hall of fame trajectory around 30- Justin Upton had about 1600 hits and 286 home runs at that age.

My dad said that he was honestly a little bit disappointed in Harper because he thought Harper had the opportunity to be an inner circle hall of famer based on his high school numbers. Harper will just have to settle for merely being a first ballot hall of famer, a tragic fate.
I don't see him as a first ballot guy yet. I feel like he's overrated. Not saying he isn't really damn good but you can still be overrated even if you're great but he's only played one or two season that really seemed super impressive to me
Full disclosure, I don't like him or the way he plays. I admit he's a great player though, just not as good as he's been depicted

@decker528 you are not wrong. First ballot guys have the counting stats to match the peripherals. Bryce is about 900 hits and 120+ bombs short of that

@@ShrexyGuyand has many more years to play. Let’s not right him off yet. He has 7 years contracted still, barring major injury he could totally maintain a pace of 120 hits a year on average and 17 HR a year. Those numbers aren’t untouchable with the rest of his career

If Royce Lewis can stay healthy he'll be a perennial MVP candidate. With his current stats, if he were to play a 162 game season his stats say he would hit 46 homeruns.

@BenKoch-p4t I am too! I don't quite know if my math is correct lol. I took his 27 homeruns divided by 94 games to equal .287 homeruns a game times that by 162 to equal 46 homeruns.

@CosmicStar3 I realized that after I did my math lol. I was on Base Reference and didn't see right below where it said 162 game average. Guess I'm blind lol.
So I’m an Orioles fan. But I admittedly walked away from baseball from around 2002-2018. I always went to a game every year in Baltimore though. Always rooted for them. And between 08’ and 14’, I at least new the bigger stars in the league. So I wasn’t completely detached from baseball. But it never dawned on me that the same Delmon Young that hit the bases clearing double against Detroit, was the same guy that threw the bat at the umpire in the minors. I’ve seen that clip for years now. It just clicked. Had no idea that was the same guy. And he hit one of the biggest hit for my team in the past couple decades. 😂
Its crazy how quickly Harper ended up in the bigs considering he was drafted to play a position he wasn't playing. He was a catcher and by all accounts a good one but the Nats drafted him to be an OF. I think a pretty good move though.

What’s crazy is Adley is an A and you can argue he wasn’t even the best pick the orioles made in that draft
You can’t properly grade Delmon Young without mentioning the trade tree that’s netted the rays over 60 war and is still providing value to this day 17 years later.
There’s some drawbacks with Cole signing with the Yankees though, since he has to face his daddy, Rafael Devers until he retires
Carlos Correa is a future Hall of Famer,, despite what happened in Houston. I'm glad that he's staying with the Twins, he just needs to stay healthy. Joe Mauer deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

It's still crazy to me that in 2019 the O's got Adley 1/1 and Gunnar Henderson 2/1. It's amazing Gunnar was passed over by 29 other teams.

Jackson Holliday is starting to get comfy in MLB with a grand slam for his first HR a dew days ago and a nice 2-4 day today against the Guardians (one hit coming off of Emmanuel Clase no less). Paul Skenes might be the best draft pick in a very long time. Bro has ROTY basically locked up and could even win a Cy Young in his ROOKIE YEAR.
Great vid but I wouldn’t say Skenes was a lock for the first pick. Most people had Crews going first until right before the draft when rumors swirled of Crews not wanting to play for the Pirates or something like that.
The Pirates had a dinosaur as their #2 starter in 2023. He was a lock..

Hochevar was drafted by the Royals when they didn't have a GM. He was never worth a first round pick.
Bryce is a career negative defender with one year with a 6+ WAR.
He can hit, sure. But hes nearing the end of any kind of peak and is near 1400 hits short of 3k, and over 150 HRs short of 500.
He is not a first ballot guy and probably won't get the counting stats to justifiably be one
Strasburg should at least get a A- for that world series MVP
For Matt Bush.. You should have provided multiple grades.. as for being drafted 1 by the Padres... That grade is easily an F.... For him to some how get his shit together over a decade after being drafted and make it all the way back to and including making it to the majors and changing positions and having some success this should qualify as a C IMO....

You were far too kind with your grade on Delmon Young. Remember, these are #1 overall picks you are talking about. The numbers he put up would have been ok if he was drafted at the end of the first and would have been commendable if he was a 5th or 6th rounder.

As a non American. Why are the grades ABCDF. What happend to E?
There’s basically two ways to think about it- ABCD are grades of passing and F stands for Failure, so not being consecutive like the others makes it stand out more, and at the time when it was being widely adopted, there was no standard nationwide and education was spotty, so E was being interpreted as being for “Excellent” as opposed to being seen as the last of the grade system, since the parents had not been graded with such a system and it was unfamiliar

but this video isn’t comparing Harper and Correa to each other. It’s ranking how good teams did picking in the draft and how good a player is/was based on the players own stats

Last place teams get first pick in the draft the next year. That's how it worked when the Astros were so bad in 2013-2015 at least

They were the worst franchise in baseball from 1998 to 2010, an Owner that out right refused to pay players what they're worth. Development 0 pitchers, tho over a dozen of them went kn to be stars for other franchises. An overall embarrassment of a professional sports team. Still the best stadium in the MLB tho.
