Don't know why, but I have watched this video at least ten times and each time it makes me well up with emotion. Must be all those burly men breaking out in song, not to mention the lovely ponies prancing along so beautifully ... everything just seems to come together, engendering so much 'pride in' ... a 'love of' and an 'endearing, heartwarming celebration' of a wonderful animal.

This reminds me of the horse trekking I did back in '02. What an unforgettable experience that was. It sure made me appreciate where my gelding came from as he was born there. You haven't experience Iceland truly until you ride with experienced horsemen like these guys and sing the folk songs in the high country amongst glacier fed streams. I dream of someday going back and doing it again.

I must've been about 12 years old. Me, my younger brother, mum & dad were on holiday in Iceland. I woke up at about 5/6 in the morning and the tent we were in was literally falling apart under the weight of the rain. We packed up our stuff as quickly as we could and ran to a small cabin where we checked in the day before. We banged on the door, but no response.
Now, I have mild autism, and at that age, this was one of those nightmare scenarios for me: the wet rain, the haste, my lack of sleep, the high pitched yelling of my younger brother, all of it got me to a small panic attack. The kind were I would just retreat inside my own head for ours. But then someone let us into this small wooden cabin. We huddled up around the small fireplace, the smell of freshly baked bread in the air. This song was playing in the background. My mother took my brother by the arm, stepped in front of me and started dancing to it with him. They imitated riding a horse I think, but because they were still numb from the cold, the whole display made me chuckle out loud. My father turned around and saw the attempts of my other family members, so he proceeded to imitate them, only he was doing it way less ironically and far more committed. This finally broke me and I joined in on the whole idiotic display. Mind you I wasn't a fan of any kind of dancing at that age, in fact it frustrated the hell out of me. But I did regardless. And I remember that moment, all of us dancing like idiots to a song none of us could understand a single word of, as one of the happiest I've ever shared with them.
My dad bought that album, which had just come out I believe, directly off the lady who'd let us into the cabin. He used to put in on all the time in the car. Now I live on my own and there's very little driving around with my dad or listening to music in my life, so damn, I'm glad I finally found this song online. Thanks buddy, you've helped me out quite a bit.

Icelandic horse board says English would be:
    Ride like hell
Ride, ride, drive (the herd) over the sand
    Ride like hell
    Whack that horse
That's how we'll have some fun.
Ride, ride, drive (the herd) over the sand
    Ride like hell
    Don't slow the horse down
    This is a great party
There's still lots of moonshine in the bottle
And flatbread in the saddle bag
And there's some embers glowing in the ash
We will come home very drunk!
    (Love this video!!!)

"ríðum" is the imperative 1st person plural of "ríða" and it means "Let's ride". "Let's ride like the devil" (it's obviously implied: as fast as the devil).

Icelandic horse board says lyrics are:
    RÍÐUM SEM FJANDINN
    Ríðum, ríðum, rekum yfir sandinn,
    ríðum sem fjandinn
    skellum í gandinn
    svona skemmtir sér landinn.
    Hæ!
    Ríðum, ríðum, rekum yfir sandinn,
    ríðum sem fjandinn
    stillum ei gandinn
    þetta er stórkostlegt geim.
Það er fullt af bruggi í flöskunni
    og flatbrauðsneið í töskunni
og glóð er enn í öskunni
    við komum öskufullir heim.

That was a little rude, but thanks anyway for hoping to set me straight on the distinction. Actually didn't mean it in a literal way, but more in the way of 'prancing ponies' ... I do KNOW they're horses, and after 35 years of raising them can certainly recognise the difference ... just thought it was a wonderful video.

I was meaning to end my comment on how I agree with you about the video, but I had already clicked "Post" and did not have the thought of re-making the comment to clear it up. I do not know what happened, I'm usually weary polite to my elders. Sorry about that, and have a weary good day.

To the previous "basic translation" comment that the name of this song means "Fuck as the Devil" - not cool!! Just like in English, many Icelandic words have double meaning, and in this particular case the words of the song "Ridum sem fjandinn" mean "Let's ride as the Devil" - ( not "fuck as the devil" ). It's actually a beautiful rallying song, sung by a group of horsemen on an outing in the Icelandic wilderness. Very positive lyrics, nothing to do with fucking, OK?

ridum is to ride, and "sem fjandinn" sem being as or like and fjandinn being generally related to the devil and hell
it could be read as "ride as all hell" or "ride as fast as the devil"
