Thanks Brian. Any updates on how the car is running?

Running like a champ. That said I just put the car back on the road so only a few hundred kms. Amazing how much smoother and quieter start ups are now.

Great video. Can you confirm for me that variocam pads are different than the cam chain guide rail pads? The way your video describes the process is that these are the guide rail pads for each bank, where as, I thought that the variocam was a single set of pads for the adjustment.

The chain guide rail pads are long parts that don’t see the hard wear the small variocam pads do. My long rail pads were barley grooved at 115k miles. The single set of wear pads your thinking of is the IMS chain tensioner pads, which can only be changed if you tear the engine completely down.

@@tuul75 thanks, for whatever reason it's tough to find a diagram of the different pads. I am chasing a deviation issue, my chain guide rail pads, as as well short chain were replaced, but my deviation is still at -5.25 on bank 1. I think my next fix is going to be cam chain tensioners and variocam pads. I don't have CEL, so no immediate issue, but my bank 1 deviation has gone from -4.8 to -5.25 in 1000 miles.

What timing lock tools did you use?

Appropriate size bolt to lock the crankshaft pulley. DIY made the cam lock tool. There are some drawings of the tool online. I have access to machining equipment at my work.

Now that you're done, do you wish you would have lowered the engine and trans and worked on it below?

I researched how much work it was dropping the engine. I think this method is still overall less work. However more awkward body positioning, especially without a lift.
