It's an old school thing as well, earlier and opening matches usually get frowned upon for being the best match and Booker probably could have been nursing an injury and really had to bump hard to match the quality

It always confounds me whenever we hear stories about these decorated veterans getting upset about younger guys going out, stealing the show and getting over with what they're given. There have been stories about Triple H and Shawn Michaels burying the likes of CM Punk and Bobby Lashley when they were starting out in developmental and on the main rosters. And I'm like "Why?" With their positions in the company, why did they feel so threatened by these guys? Back then, guys like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Booker T, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit were made men. They were so over that they were in no real danger of losing their "spots" in the company. The only way they could so was if they fucked up really badly or did something so terrible that Vince McMahon had no choice but to do away with them.
It's kind of like how people joke about wondering when shows like "The Simpsons" or "South Park" are going to end. The answer being when the creators get tired of doing it. It's the same with these established veterans. They'll walk away when they're good and ready. It would make more sense for guys like Cena, Orton, Batista and Edge to get upset at something like this back then. They were on the cusp of breaking through to the main event picture but not quite there yet. So, what made Booker T so insecure and threatened about Paul London and Sylvain Grenier putting on a stellar match whereas he as a bigger star could easily go out there and put on an even better match? Did the former five-time, five-time, five-time, five-time, FIVE-TIME WCW Champion really have that fragile of an ego?
It seems that professional wrestling is one of the few athletic-based forms of entertainment where your co-workers/teammates try to discourage you and sabotage you from putting your best effort out there. You don't see Aaron Judge get upset at Giancarlo Stanton for hitting a homerun in a game instead of him to get the Yankees a victory. You never saw Rob Gronkowski get upset at Tom Brady for throwing more passes to Julian Edelman than him if it meant the Patriots won the game. So long as the team wins at the end of the day, why should anyone care? If it means more fans are entertained and it makes the show even better, what does it matter if the undercard guys deliver?
Sorry about the long rant. It just seems like pro wrestling is a very weird business to get into.
Ego comes before any and everything in wrestling. Some of the biggest stories in wrestling, like the Montreal Screwjob (whether it’s a work or not) comes down to ego. Wrestlers have huge egos and the game to the bussiness is being selfish while acting like your not. It’s a work such as the bussiness itself. Two guys out there going toe to toe over whose the better ‘wrestler’ meanwhile the final pinfall is always rigged…while it takes two to tango, there is only one top guy . It doesn’t matter how decorated anyone is in the biz, people will always have ego issues. Even now I think many vets don’t mind people not being able to get over the way people got over back in the day because the wwe not being able to make huge stars means that the vets become even bigger stars…the previous generation is even more important and vets must love that…a very selfish industry
