Love your tours!!! If I had 50 million or there abouts I would absolutely have to find a great property from you to see you are very interesting and funny and know so much about properties in the rich areas of the city. Thanks so much and keep up the great tours!!!
Really enjoy your video, keep up the good work! We planted some privacy hedges around our entire property(half an acre lot) and the hedges are only 4 feet tall will need 3 years to grow into a solid wall. Still cost us a fortune for these relatively young hedges! I wonder if rich people all buy mature hedges so they can have a instant solid hedge wall or if they buy younger ones and wait for some years before they finally grow to 10 feet plus?
The original entrance to Chartwell was about 100 ft. south of the service drive you cited as the original entrance, any old photo from the Beverly Hillbillies shows the entry gate as being directly in line with the front of the mansion.
Right, the service entrance was always that. Over time the original huge estate had three house and lots carved out it. Then, they were all bought back, in the sixties, I think. One of the houses was demolished just so the owner could have the current long driveway up to his house. Another was demolished just so the owner could have a helipad on the estate. The third was kept; although a mansion in its own right, it became an annex guest house to the huger main mansion. Really, how cool is all that? In addition to that, he also bought Ronald Reagan’s house next door from widow Nancy Reagan, and tore it down to add some more space to the estate. Actually, it is a little unclear what the plan was, as the owner died; some think there was going to be a large servants hall built, with another tunnel dug from the main mansion to connect (the site is at the bottom of that hill). New owner Lachlan Murdoch has said nothing. I should add, the owner did not play the Evil Billionaire in getting all this property. He did it the Good Guy Billionaire way - offering huge wodges of cash more than the property was worth. Everyone was very happy, apparently. Local history is fascinating. Pity I will never see this bit of it, unless my ole buddy Lachlan Murdoch invites me to drop in to say g’day.
My late grandmother lived at the 729 Bel Air Road estate, which her husband had built for her in 1972. I used to spend a lot of time there with my family, in the 70s and 80s. The home sold in 1995 after my grandparents had passed a few years prior. They also used to live on Nimes, I don’t know the address.
Andy Casbo it’s owned by Israeli businessman and hotelier Beny Alagem. He co-founded Packard Bell computers and later sold the company, he also owns the Beverly Hilton Hotel. His net worth hovers around $1.1 billion.
The outside of the house was at the property, many of the locations were in Beverly Hills & Century City and the interiors were probably shot at Universal as the interiors in the show were not the interior of the house so probably at the studio.
Y plein de routes américaines qui porte le nom de bled de chez nous. A Bel Air,tu as St Cloud Rd,aussi. C’est toujours de très belles rues, donc sympa pour nous 😉
Bel Air Road is my favorite street in LA. There are several really beautiful houses on that street that weren't mentioned in this video. Christophe, you described the Bruce Makowsky house as the best new modern house in LA. Do you really personally believe that is the best house or is that just something you're supposed to say as a real estate broker? The house doesn't seem very tasteful to me.
That’s a good question Sam. I’m not sure if his company is listing the property since he never mentioned it and if they are then has to talk good about it in order to sell lol.
Yes. Lachlan Murdoch, son of Aussie press tycoon Rupert Murdoch, picked it up for $150 mil. Marked down from $350 mil. It pays to negotiate. Address is 750 Bel Air Road, however, the last owner closed that off (he left the service entrance, which is what you see in the video). He bought the house and grounds next to him and bulldozed it to make a long driveway from the side that turns into the now-hidden front gate. The address of that house was 875 Nimes Road, and that is now the address of the Beverley Hillbillies mansion. Official name “Chartwell”. Incidentally, he bought the house and lot next to that, and bulldozed it to make a helipad. Grass, not concrete. And he bought another house and lot neighboring his (as did the other two) and turned the house into a guest house for his larger mansion. Oh yes, and he bought the house of his neighbors, the Reagans, and bulldozed it for no particular reason I can see. This was after Nancy died. The estate is now some ridiculously large amount of acreage, and this is what Murdoch bought. A snip at $150 mil.
P.S. At about 7:47 on the video, you see the entrance to the helipad - was 841 Nimes. It is part of the Chartwell estate, but cut off by the gorge running through it. The only way to get to the rest of the estate is to drive out onto Nimes and re-enter at the new main entrance at 875 Nimes. See it on the left about 7:54. Google maps shows the boundaries of all the parcels of land that make up the estate, and their house numbers.
It's easy to see the popularity of this area. Very lovely streets and properties, but the price tags are simply insane. Price fiction I would call it, for those of us with ordinary jobs and income. There must be a couple of zeros too many in those numbers.
Sorry, checkbooks are so twentieth century. What I mean is, where is my black Amex unlimited credit card with the tap function? That’s right, not come yet.
