I have quite a library of the HVAC School tutorials and greatly admire your abilities as an educator. I do however have one tiny little problem and it’s not anything that you or I can do much about. I can’t use as much of your stuff in my class as I’d like to because of the F word. Fahrenheit… there I’ve said it. The one word that I will not allow students in my classes to use. How long would this video be if we had to recalculate every reference to temperature and how much would it break the flow of information. If only we all used the same method. I guess it won’t be last time we hear this lament and none of us will be holding our breath waiting for change. Again, thank you for your great work.
Thanks for the video, it answered a few questions I had as to why the high and low pressure lines are not insulated together, as the low pressure line needs to be cool to keep the compressor temp down. Or why my ac man thirty years ago recommended a 4 ton air-handler with a 3.5 ton condenser since we ran the liquid line inside the drain pipe.
As a commercial tech....you are speaking my language.....we dont hardly ever see a liquid line port. I will say though....ran into a weird situation 2 weeks ago. Mammoth WSHP it has a discharge and liquid port.....and no suction port.....i was like what the heck is this. Great video

Checked airflow and checked subcooling wich were both where they should be according to manufacturer I also checked discharge line temp which was about 175 F the superheat was very low so I replaced txv. Started it up had the same issue. I called carrier and was told that a discharge temp above 160 meant that the compressor was the issue. I to thought that 175 was acceptable but not according to Carrier. They claim that on residential condensers with a scroll compressor that anything above 160 is to high even on a 100 degreee day. Also compressor was pulling normal amps according to manufacturer data plate.

I'm a technician for Fluid Chillers Inc. Damn this is a fasciating video. I have run ultra low temperature Chillers with as low as -20/ or 20Hg suction line pressure. These are two stage Bitzers with interstage subcoolers. So the discharge of the interstage H/E helps cool down the compressor?
Yup. We service many centrifugal low pressure chillers. Evap side is in a vacuum and the high side can be or at the most barely over 0 psig of pressure. I believe the relief valves/ burst disk pop on those at like 15 psi or something close to that.
So, the general industry standard is not to exceed approximately 250 degrees, 6 inches down the discharge line. What is the minimum temperature standard to keep from damaging the compressor? I know that most compressor mfg. say not to go below 20 degrees superheat on the suction inlet, but what is the minimum temperature on the discharge line?
The real concern of low discharge temperature is low discharge pressure which increases the velocity of the refrigerant. Not really a concern for your average HVAC tech, but it comes into play in refrigeration now and then, especially with evaporative condensers. You can exceed the limitations of the system piping, sometimes fairly quickly on old systems.
now this is more for Southern or western issues w more year round hot weather I'm assuming ... because in New York area and the north east we have less of thay hottet weather... so would you still recommend this for us guys up this way ?
Discharge temperature is a pretty critical measurement and while it might not be as huge of an issue up there (I don't know), it would still be a great tool to use when determining the lifespan of a compressor. Like he implies in this video, the hotter the discharge temp, generally the shorter the lifespan.

Either way, You can't say for 225 discharge temperature or pressure that the other would be anything since it's a superheated vapor. It won't follow a normal PT relationship. Edit: 300° CAN break down oil.
Youre being pedantic about something that was a hypothetical meant to reinforce an idea, not an all out statement of fact. That being said, you can be pretty reasonably sure about numbers like that since there's a huge repository of manufacturer data available which they do extensive testing on before releasing.

I used to install a small stick-on dot on the discharge line that would change color so I could tell if the compressor had overheated.
Would it not fade?

Unless you have put a thermometer inside a compressor head you have no idea how hot it is.
Pretty cocky to assume the manufacturers don't know how hot their components run. The information is out there, read it.
