- I thought that when you grow herbs, you start it off from seed, see it sprout and then just let it grow. That's all you need to do... right?
And when you grow herbs too, the flowers will be just as wonderful as the leaves, right?
The answer is "Wrong" for both.
I didn't know that much about herbs growing until I started getting into "trouble" with them. My herbs were growing tall and spindly, as soon as flowers appear, the leaves started to yellow and die. The herbs grew so fast and the plant cycle ended faster than I could even harvest. The herbs also looked like it was at the end of its life cycle all the time. What happened?
Then I discovered "Pruning". It is so essential for herbs growing and planting. I started to prune religiously now to keep herbs healthy and last longer. This is what this video is all about.

Lemon basil is soo tasty
I pinch off the flower buds on basil plants as soon as they appear. Today I also pruned the top 8 inches of every plant and dehydrated the leaves and made pesto. I'l should get at least six more good harvests before fall. We use a lot of pesto in recipes.

What soil did you use for your basil?
hi! i used an ordinary planting soil. But it has to be well draining and the plant should receive full sun :)
Good day. Beautiful plant and good information. If you don't mind, can I request seeds of lemon basil?
hi! am not sure if i have any left..let me check it.. where are you located?
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday Provence of Batangas Philippines madam, thank you for your reply.
From where i can get basil seeds?

When should I start pruning? Mine is just more than a finger in length. I want them to grow faster. Should I prune now??
Pruning will make it bushier. If your stem from soil up is not a Y yet then if you prune now it will grow out a fork and this will encourage more leaves. If your plant is healthy you can do the cut now. Otherwise i would suggest to wait till stem is solid

Thank you for this quick and thorough advice. Actually the problem is they are too crowded in a small pot with this height. If I prune them I dont know if they can spread well with tight space. Can they grow well if I repot half of them ad get them some space before pruning?
Yes a good idea to repot them if too crowded. Ensure it is stable first before u prune
@GROW SOMETHING GREEN
Now i have been pruning them for about 5 times to use in cooking :D. I have repotted into 3 pots, one pot is growing upright but others look curving and stems are not thick as much as i want. thats why I cant wait them too long to prune so as to make the stem strong. i have only 2 months to end summer here. I'd like to know how to get seeds to save for next summer planting. Thank you !
Hello! How do you water your lemon basil? Do you spray it or use a watering can?
hello... i use a hose :) or a watering can but i water them at the soil. Sometimes if the weather is not too sunny or hot I will spray the leaves to keep them clean (also to keep the pests away if any) But most of the time I am watering at the soil.
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday Thank you so much for responding 😊 . Your videos are very informative
Thank you.. i appreciate the support :).
No wonder mine doesn't look like yours!
Yes pia..must prune..it will grow bushier and lasts longer..always delay flowering for herbs..unless u want to start a new plant:)
I prune but I think it's how and where I prune it 😆
