Aman... I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH for this series. This is by FAR the best chess video series on the internet. OMG I'm shocked. These are the fundamentals that i was missing. I went up almost 100 points in the last week since i started doing this. I literally love you. You're the best teacher I've seen so far. OMG.. 💜💜💜
9 months from this series. Im a 850~(started at 700, this is day two of using this habits) player, after putting all of this in practice im increasing nearly a 100 points per day in blitz. And just like that I was able to beat twice in a row the 1.6k bot with no helps. Mr. Hambelton, sincerely thank you for helping us improving in chess.
Aman I just wanted to say thankyou for this series. I am 52 and have been playing for 5 years without ever really improving after year 1. I have watched much chess instruction on YT but your thought processes and teaching style really stand out. You have exceptional talent being a GM but able to communicate brilliantly to much lesser beings, you do this with understated gentleness and humility which none of your peers can match. Also great warmth, humour and personality.. Extremely engaging. Thanks again.
what I'm really impressed about with this series is the amount of time and care taken over the RUclips edits. Other videos posted from Twitch content can be really frustrating with all the constant notification interruptions and constant engagement with dumb comments in chat, but these videos really strike the right balance, and I also love that the opponents' thinking time is often shortened. All in all, much more enjoyable to watch... THANKYOU 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Really appreciate these Building Habits sessions, Aman. This is easily the best resource on RUclips for developing as a player. Other Tubers just play but you actually went through the effort of creating rules and sticking by them. Thank you
I have a feeling that following the rules of a sub 1000 rated player, together with not doing anything stupid, becomes much easier when you're already a higher rated player, let alone a grandmaster. Especially the part about not doing anything stupid... or setting up the back rank mate down a queen in the last game. I'm really looking forward to when this series reaches my rating level.
I’ve found all your videos to hold nuggets of wisdom for a post-beginner like me. I’m above 1000 and even the 400 elo videos have something for me. I feel like you are filling the gaps in my chess education with these videos. Thanks Aman. I love the chessbrahs keep up the good work!
This is the best chess tutorial for beginners, I just reached the four digits for the first time and these videos are a big reason why! So much better than other channels!
@Max Payne He is teaching habits that are progressively getting more and more complicated and nuanced. I think he knows that taking a pawn is good, however focusing on development and simple tactics is more important.
@Max Payne The point is that the habits he's teaching are in general good, especially at this level. Taking free pawns won't be winning games if you lose to easy tactics anyway.
@Max Payne At 900-1200 the level is still so low that even 2-3 pawns advantage (or even a piece advantage) wont decide the game, because people still mess up tactics, hang their pieces, or blunder checkmate. The most deciding factors at that level is to 1) not hang pieces, 2) protect bank rank and 3) develop the pieces to good and safe squares. These arent the habits of a “700 rated” player, these are the core ideas for players of all levels. It’s just that as you get better you learn when to break the rules for better play
Thank you again Aman, this series has helped me improve my game by giving me the basics, which I was missing. Now every game I can hear your sing song voice reminding me what to do next. You are a great teacher. I've spent a year watching chess vids from the likes of John Bartholomew etc and while they help too, I give you the full credit for my sudden improvement. It's like a light bulb just went off in my head!!
dude ive watched a lot of chess stuff on youtube and barely got any better. I watched one video of yours and won 10 games in a row lol! Your content is WAAAYYYY better for beginners and the funny part is I viewed your stuff last so all the other channels had a first shot at improving my game and couldnt. Chessbrah ftw!
Love that you don’t focus on winning but on making the right decisions/habits at one’s current knowledge. The more right decisions that are made, the more improvement made. Every other “climbing the ladder” series seems like it’s just showing off their ability to find “simple” complex tactics against low rated players. Hence why so many people comment something along the lines of “it’s like the opponents give you their pieces.” Winning will come with the right moves and habits. The right moves won’t just come from winning matches from getting lucky. Cheers brah!
I greatly appreciate the elo series. I feel though I'm learning slowly that I am generally learning to play more accurately and with confidence. Love the content!
Love the low-key gear change when Nb8 appeared out of nowhere. The mindset shifted from "let's play the most reasonable move" to "let's play easily justifiable good moves quickly and see what happens". I'm on the other end of this a lot, get up a load of material, get into time trouble when my opponent moves quickly and I'm trying to figure out strong moves in the position, blunder mate in 2.
Aman, as a 28 year old 1000 rated player, this couldn't be more helpful!! The amount of games I lose because of silly mistakes or because I don't pay enough attention at what's going on is just ridiculous, hopefully with your tips I'll be able to rank up a bit more :D (Also i get terrible anxiety whenever I play chess, my heart beat goes crazy high so I try not to play it too often, unfortunately)
This is so much more helpful than memorizing some complicated opening lines and playing for tricks. That is what the gm’s are “teaching” the streamers for Pogchamps and that is why they are playing at such a poor level consistently. As a beginner you really don’t need to learn openings... What Aman is doing here makes a lot of sense.
Great series Aman! Must be torture for you to pass up on some of those juicy #'s! and also really cool that you teach a strong foundation with simple easy to follow rules and still pull off a win most of the time!
The point is that if you follow the rules, you should rarely have an undefended piece (pawns yes, pieces no). Just look at these games. How many times are his pieces undeveloped?
These techniques work, even for eejits like me. I've just reached 1000 in blitz and I'm over 1000 in bullet thanks to the techniques in these videos. Thanks Chessbrah!

Man, this guy is improving quickly. Went from 400 and now he's already over 1000. Good job!
He has potential. He should get an official FIDE rating. Maybe he'll reach Grandmaster level. Who knows.

pretty sums
Last game is the classic 900 lmao. Blunder queen, still win somehow. Love it
Never resign brahs
Yeah one of my first games on chess dot com was like that. Lost my Queen in the opening. They blundered it back in the endgame and I converted.
Since I reached 1000 rating today, I can now laugh at how bad 900s are. I can only blunder rooks and still win.

This is by far the best chess series on RUclips. I send all of my friends to the series when they are getting into chess and want to improve
I like how he doesn't deliberately win all the games, and sticks to the principles hes saying
Same!!! I love also how he doesn't care too much about time management, which I guess relates pretty well with a player of that rating!!

I have a rule suggestion. Making a random pawn move is fine, but better might be locating an undefended piece and defend it.
