Full Journey on Howrah Rajdhani Express (via Patna): Howrah-Patna

- Back in 1993, India's fourth Rajdhani came in the form of a variation of the Howrah Rajdhani, as it was deemed to run via Patna once a week on Sundays, as a variant to the standard Howrah Rajdhani via Gaya. Back in the days, it had no commercial halts between Howrah and Patna and a technical halt at Jhajha, Till the Asansol-Patna-Mughal Sarai section got fully electrified, the train ran with twin WDM2s, in matching Rajdhani livery, making it a spectacular sight.
But I guess all good things in life come to an end: the twin diesels are a thing of the past now, and the usual Ghaziabad WAP7 takes charge of the Howrah Rajdhani via Patna. I had last traveled on this train back in 2008, and was eager to undertake another journey, through the hinterlands of northern Jharkhand during early monsoons.
The first part of this compilation features the Rajdhani's progress in the first 545 kilometres between Howrah and Patna. The Rajdhani starts of briskly on a cloudy afternoon and races through the Howrah Bardhaman chord, maintaining a fantastic tempo right through till Asansol, the highlight being the devastating skip of Durgapur at 130 kmph. This video also contains the skip of Bardhaman - something which is presently not done by this train as it has a scheduled stoppage there. At Asansol, we overtake the Kolkata Jammu Tawi Express and veer off northwards into the mainline at Sitarampur.
Between Sitarampur and Jasidih, the terrain is relatively flat with minor undulations, and a few small hills in the distance. There are however some stunning curves close to the major river crossings such as the Jayanti, Puthroo and Mayurakshi rivers, making for a spectacular view. The heavens split apart soon after the Mayurakshi crossing and we had a refreshing thunderstorm.
Between Jasidih and Jhajha, the terrain becomes more hillier with sparser population and a small forested area before Jhajha. A section in particularly before Jhajha, where the train negotiates a rock cutting, is quite stunning.
After the picturesque Jhajha station, surrounded by small hills, we witness a most spectacular sunset, and clatter away towards Kiul. At this point, I began sharing the door with a very friendly RPF official, who was on duty in full combat gear in our coach. Just a couple of weeks prior to our journey, a militant group owing allegiance to the Maoist insurgents had attacked the Dhanbad Patna Intercity Express in this area (just after Jamui), and the RPF official was very eager to show me this place. At Gidhaur, we encountered a horribly late Poorva Express (over 10 hours delayed) and a little before nightfall, crossed Jamui.
There was a wonderful dinner in the evening, with soup, a classic fish fry and paneer cutlet, rice, dal, roti and chicken, topped off by a mango and Kesar Pista ice-cream. The train rolled into Patna 10 minutes ahead of schedule.
