I used to live at the end of the road! But that was a good few years back now but I’m very often in the area, grew up on that reserve basically! Well maybe I’ll pop a post up one time I’m down that way! Will likely do a good few more days before the winter is out
Hi Tom, I am currently a Sony (A9 200-600) user and looking at investing in the lens. I have a bit of time on my hands whilst I save, so also keenly awaiting a Z8 Z6iii update on the body range. I have seen largely positive reviews on this lens, as you would expect mostly from Nikon ambassadors except perhaps with the exception of Steve Perry's review. I then read the review by Digital Camera World (Can’t give direct link here as YT puts my comment in jail, but it is easy to find) where the lens seems to have been put through some pretty rigorous lab tests, which appeared to highlight a flaw with this lens with the TC at 840mmm, whereby they report a loss of sharpness towards the close end of the focus range, which did not occur with the 400 2.8TC they tested. I live in the real world, and of course I would expect a TC, even a built in one to suffer a bit, but this looked a bit drastic from the charts they provided. I am not brand bashing, but I know the Sony TC's on the 600GM behave incredibly well. Thanks
So right now I haven’t had my lens long enough to make any final judgements but from my early images the lens is sharp, even with the TC it’s really sharp. But I will do more and more testing to really understand if there are any differences. Of course I’m now using a full production model, was the lens test done with a full production model or sample? Additionally there can be variation lens to lens, I’ve seen this with my 300mm 2.8 some find there’s is not as sharp but mines razor. I’ll do more testing to see how it performs close focus with the built in TC but early impressions are it’s as I would be expecting from a super tele of this calibre, but I don’t shoot test charts… I’ll let you know if I find anything from my testing!
@@TomMasonPhoto Thanks for the reply Tom, realise it is still early doors for ya. And yes, there is every possibility he had a PP model to test, that was somehow flawed, as the target tests Steve did seemed to indicate only marginal loss of IQ. Worrying though isn't it that there can be so much variation between sharpness in these exotics, especially given the price of these things you'd think the testing they do before they leave the factory would pick stuff like this up! Anyway, thanks and I look forward to more updates as they come!
@@Karkawry1970 tbh from my own experience it’s more likely the loan model gets bumped and mistreated after the factory that’s a major issue when people get loaned lenses for test!
Workshops will be on the horizon! I will be releasing a new mailing list to joint in the new year and then from that I’ll announce dates and workshops coming soon!
Sorry, Tom, but I am unsubscribing. For about the last year, your recent videos all seem to be just infomercials for Nikon and Gitzo. I hope you go back to wildlife photography soon.
The 600 f4 and the 400 f2.8 are what I call lottery lenses. Winning the lottery may be the only way I’ll ever own either one of them.
Hi Tom - nice to see you and Ricci
Brilliant and can’t wait to see more 😃😃
Can’t wait to get hit with my lens in the next few weeks!
Cracking bit of kit!
Enjoy the new lens Tom, can’t wait to see what you capture with it 👏👍😀
Yes I can’t wait! It’s not that often I get super excited by new gear but this lens is rather special!
Just got mine…love it!!!
It seems to look heavier than it is then, thanks Tom, look forward to seeing you and Ricci on an actual shoot and some images
Yes it certainly “looks” heavier but when you pick it up it’s amazing how well weighted and light it feels!
You're giving me lens envy 😅
Looking forward to more content with it.
Yeah I can understand that! I can’t wait to get cracking with a few different subjects!
A first thing in Nikon that i am envy about :)
With mine now having turned up, it’s certainly a envy stimulating bit of kit!
Please will you ask Ricci what tripod he was using in the hide, thanks.
Hang on, you live near rye mead!? Literally 5 minutes away!! Would love to come down when you're there shooting!

No different to buying a flash car. Worth it if it's what you enjoy.

Hey, bit off topic but are you offering in person one to ones or workshops next year?
Workshops will be on the horizon! I will be releasing a new mailing list to joint in the new year and then from that I’ll announce dates and workshops coming soon!
Can you let us know what new camera bag you get!
I shall do!
Nice that you have a spare £16k lying around. 😂
Luckily it's a business investment for me!
Very smart! 🎉 I hope you enjoy it 😅
Don't lift a 600 by the camera body! Even one this "light"!
Yeah, I cringed every time!
Nice but it would be beter if this lens was available 🤨😏
It is, mine turned up yesterday!
