Loved my Kenmore uprights and canisters, I would have bought another upright and canister if Panasonic was still making them. Must say the Mieles are worth the extra money!
Thanks for watching and commenting! While the old Panasonic/Kenmores had a pretty high price to performance ratio, I think your Miele is a superior machine... especially if you have allergies! Thanks again!
What I found works really well is a manual drain auger you can get at any hardware store, it is flexible enough to get past the bend in the hose, no disassembly required.
I found heap bags for my kenmore canister on eBay or Amazon I believe with the silicone seal around the hole! A pack of ten or nine for about $20! Well worth it! Filtration has been much better now!
Interesting, I would definitely want to see the way they seal to the bag holder. The bag mount doesn't have much of a lip on it, so there is a part of my that thinks it may still not seal, but it would be interesting to investigate. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi Matt, Could not agree with you more about preventive maintenance, whether it be with a car or a vacuum, preventive maintenance is the key to long trouble free life of any machine. People who are looking at the short term rather than the long term usually do not understand and do not want to spend the money on long term maintenance. Just some people's ideas on how best to spend their money, but in the long run it cost them more in the end. Another great video. John in Ohio.
Hi Thomas! Unfortunately I don't have any videos on the 81614 600. I don't know if they didn't sell a ton of them or just didn't in my area, but I think I have only seen one the last four years. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Many thanks for the video. I was able to take my Kenmore hose apart, remove an eye drops bottle that I couldn’t get out with pliers, and put everything back together. Back to cleaning the house!
Thanks for the video. I will check our old Kenmore to see if this is the issue. I will check all that I can and my Kenmore has almost no suction so I will take a look - Thanks - Johin
We have an older Kenmore canister, still works like a charm after 20 years. Our's has a small piece of removable filter foam that's held by clips, in front of the motor. You take that small foam piece out and wash it, let dry, put back in. I don't think this machine had one? May be a cause of some of the dust in the bag compartment getting into and causing havoc in the motor? Maybe this vac's owner has failed to use that filter foam? One thing we like about Kenmore, besides its long and dependable life, is for many years the power head has been quickly detachable with one's toe to use other attachments, instead of wrestling by hand with power head release buttons and power cords like many other makes.
The broken plastic clips in the handle happen when the unit is forced open with a screwdriver or something to pry it open...other than the screws, (and one clip if you plan to remove the hose) you don't need to pry anything. I learned the hard way! haha
Funniest clog I've seen: the Kirkland's I used to work at had a 1st generation Shark Navigator. Someone sucked up a whole philips head screw driver and kept going with it. We ended up just using our Nilfisk canister vacuum to finish the rest of the job. 😂
Wow! Pretty wild what people pick up. I always wonder how they couldn't have noticed that they picked up something so large? The weirdest one that I can actually remember was a dead mouse.... Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@HouseOfVacuums Or did a still-living mouse, perhaps in a weakened state - say Vermont - make its own way partially up the hose and then succumb while entombed in a vinyl Kenmore sarcophagus? Without an autopsy and post-mortem report, complete with toxicology panels, we may never know.
This was very helpful, thank you ! I'm a DIY-er, so I unravelled a wire hanger, then used needle-nose pliers to form a fish hook at one end and used it to unclog my Sears Progressive hose in the same way that you described in your helpful video. Thanks again ! #VacuumsSuck 😂
Hey man, thanks for watching! Yeah, I don't know what happened to the exposure. It looked good during editing, but I think something happened in the render and I didn't catch it. It is WAY overexposed... kind of embarrassing. I can't let that Miele poster go... that's a classic!
Eh, I'm not in love with either of those choices. If I was forced to choose, I would go Kenmore because there is at least some amount of service available for them. Not necessarily the case for Cirrus/Johnny vac. If you wait a couple of months, Simplicity has a promising looking entry level canister with a power nozzle. I haven't seen it in person yet, but my hopes are high.
It probably would. Still, the Miele under my bench surprisingly takes care of 90% of clogs through back suction. It always surprises me, especially since the speed control is locked out of position 6 and will only give me position 5! Thanks for watching!
Fatal flaw? Well going by Consumer Reports for the past 20 years these Panasonic built Kenmore progressive canister vacuums where the best of the best. It's not the machine's fault that people use cheap non Kenmore Bags. That particular progressive is at least 19 years old And I can't think of very many other vacuum brands that are still on the road after even 10. I had amila Earth the cost over a $1000 when new Back when I bought it in 2009. It was great for the 1st 3 or 4 years but when parts started to fail wow they were expensive and ridiculous.
Thanks for the comment. I'm not really in the Consumer Reports fan camp as they have made some pretty bad vacuum calls over the years. They had Dyson's stick vacs labelled as "Top Rated" for years when vacuum techs knew they were reliability nightmares. They finally took away the Top Rated label, but you see what I mean. Panasonic sourced Kenmores were very good machines, especially for the price. That is why they made so many recommended lists for so long because they were pretty much the only game in town on entry level canisters that weren't complete garbage. It doesn't mean they didn't come without their quirks/issues. The dust bleeding on the 5055/50557/50558/C/Q bags was a well known issue from the time they were released in the 90s. They never updated them to use a seal... so it didn't matter if you used genuine or replacement bags. That is not to say that this proved fatal to every one of those canisters. Most ran reliably for years. However, when they go bad a high percentage of the time it is due to the motors and dust ingress. This is especially true for folks who live in dusty areas. So I'm not saying they are terrible vacuums, just pointing out that it was a weakness that can very often lead to motor bearing issues after continued dust exposure over time. Cheers!
Hi Donna! What model of Kenmore upright do you have? Most have the reset on top of the hood that covers the brushroll, but it can vary by model. Thanks!
This is a far cry from my 1992 version of this design. Mine lasted 30 years and the hose split after 24 years. I tapes the hose and it went 6 more years. Sears cheaped out in this design. I think the Titan version was much better quality. Say what you want, no vacuum is worth 1200 bucks. The basic technology is 85 years old. They're all molded plastic. Walmart sold those sanitary/eureka/ Hoover convertible clones, in plastic for 69bucks. Those Panasonic canisters were 299 bucks. I have a Riccar canister purchased on close out. It was 400 bucks. It is mush handier than the Lenore ever was. I love the expandable wand and the body is half the size of the Kenmore. But I can't see myself spending 800-1200 for vacuum
If it sounds like that from the canister, it is likely the motor. They are still available and run about $90-100 for the part new. So it depends on how much you want to spend. Hope that helps!

I got 400 and 600 series if you want
Taking off the handle and blowing the clog out with a wet vac did the trick. Thanks for posting this.
Excellent! Happy to help!

Do you have a video on changing the belt on a Kenmore 81614 series 600 power wheel ( the thing that brushes the carpet 😆. I forgot the name.)

Awesome, nice work!
those Panasonic and Kenmore bags always leak like a shive from new no seal around the bag door either ....
Whats your take on tristar
How much for the Miele poster?!? Also the videos a little overexposed you might mess with the camera settings are editing next time. Good stuff

Which canister vacuum would you recommend kenmore canister or the cirrus/ johnny vac xv canister vacuum

I feel like a central vacuum would have more power and would be able to unclog that easily
It probably would. Still, the Miele under my bench surprisingly takes care of 90% of clogs through back suction. It always surprises me, especially since the speed control is locked out of position 6 and will only give me position 5!

I have the exact same vacuum and the exact same rattle.
It's pretty common on these when they get older.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Where is the reset brush motor button on my Kenmore upright canister vac
Hi Donna!

My Kenmore sound like a tractor. Worth fixing or not????😥
If it sounds like that from the canister, it is likely the motor. They are still available and run about $90-100 for the part new. So it depends on how much you want to spend. Hope that helps!
Probably a bad motor, if it’s in good shape otherwise I would put a new motor in it but it’s up to you
I have an older version of that
They have indeed made these models for a very long time. Thanks for watching!
Dont we love those customers that want to pay next to nothing for you to totally rebuild there trashed vacuum.
it absolutely kills me to see people abuse there vacuums like this 😳
Me too!
